Neuware -since the earliest results on the linkage between ras activation and cell transformation appeared a vast amount of additional information has been generated which emphasizes the importance of ras-related genes in membrane trafficking, cell proliferation, differentiation and cancer. These adv…ances led to the development of new strategies for the diagnosis, prognosis and prevention of cancer. Ras-related genes appear to be central to the mechanism of transformation by other oncogenes and therefore constitute a focal point upon which attempts to intervene in the process of carcinogenesis will be concentrated. The present volume contains the contributions to the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the 'The Superfamily of ras-Related Genes' held in Agia Pelagia, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, May 1991. At this meeting the leading researchers in this field carne together to discuss the most recent progress in analysis of biological function of the ras-related genes. As an organizer I feel that the Workshop was a success, and would like to thank all the participants and the contributors to this volume. Both desirable and undesirable flavour effects are contemplated. Furthermore, threshold values of different flavour-active compounds have… an important effect on the cumulative sensory properties of all foods. Meat from different species constitutes a major source of protein for most people. Although raw meat has little flavour and only a blood-like taste, it is a rich reservoir of non-volatile compounds with taste-tactile properties as well as flavour enhancers and aroma precursors. Non-vola tile water-soluble precursors and lipids influence the flavour of meat from different species. In addition, mode of heat processing and the nature of additives used may have a profound effect on the flavour of prepared meats. This book reports the latest advancements in meat flavour research. Following a brief overview, chapters 2 to 5 discuss flavours from different species of meat, namely beef, pork, poultry and mutton. In chapters 6 to 12 the role of meat constituents and processing on flavour are described. The final section of the book (chapters 13 to 15) summarizes analytical methodologies for assessing the flavour quality of meats. Neuware - The need for writing a monograph on polymer blends and composites became apparent during presentation of material on this subject to our advanced polymers class. Although the flood of important research in this area in the past decade has resulted in many symposia, edited collections of pap…ers, reviews, contributions to scientific journals, and patents, apparently no organized presentation in book form has been forthcoming. In a closely connected way, another strong impetus for writing this monograph arose out of our research programs in the Materials Research Center at Lehigh University. As part of this effort, we had naturally compiled hundreds of references and become acquainted with many leaders in the field of blend and composite research. Perhaps the most important concept stressed over and over again is that engineering materials are useful because of their complexity, not in spite of it. Blends and composites are toughened because many modes of resistance to failure are available. Although such multimechanism processes are diffi cult to describe with a unified theory. we have presented available develop ments in juxtaposition with the experimental portions. The arguments somewhat resemble the classical discussion of resonance in organic chemistry, where molecular structures increase in stability as more electronic configura tions become available.

Upon perusal of this bibliography, devoted to the subject of laser window and mirror materials, it becomes very apparent that the effect of the laser on materials R&D has been enormous. Several hundred papers and reports, representing millions of dollars of effort, have been promulgated over the past decade; and as new frequencies, improved tunability, higher power, and other charac teristics are achieved, we can expect even greater demands and requirements on the materials com munity. What are some of the highlights disclosec by this bibliography with regard to work already ac complished First, one can note the extensive investigations into developing new materials while at the same time improving old ones. Among the latter, alkali halides, for example, have essentially had a rebirth. I n the past five years more progress has been achieved in the chemical and structural perfec tion of this class of materials than in the entire preceding century. The cytologist studying a cell will usually have to examine its fragments, which may be dead or semiliving. In sec tions of killed cells, with the aid of the light or electron micro scope he tries to obtain some idea of the structure of the living cell. As he investigates fractions isolated from a tissue homog enate, or substances isolated from individual cells, he tries to discover the biochemical functions of the cell organoids and their components. In every case the study of degradation products of the cell (depending on the degree of degradation these may be iso lated nuclei, nucleoli, nucleolar ribosomes, ribosomal proteins and RNA, mitochondria, fragments of mitochondrial membranes, and so on) makes its own contribution to knowledge, and the infor mation obtained on different objects is mutually complementary. First as dyestuffs, meaicinals and tannins and, much later, because of their potential use in examining the systematic and… evolutionary relationships of plants, and their impli cation in defence against both herbivores and phytopatho gens. It is not surprising, therefore, that the first formally organised Society of Phytochemists, the Plant Phenolics group which was established in England in 1958, should have devoted themselves to an intensive study of these compounds. They were quickly followed by a like group in North America. But, by the mid-1960's, it was obvious to the members of both societies that their net was spread wider than just phenolic compounds and in 1965 both adopted a more appropriate name, The Phytochemical Society (now Phytochemical Society of Europe (PSE), and The Phytochemical Society of North America (PSNA) respec tively). In spite of this broadening of interest, both socie ties have continued to devote a major portion of their deliberations to phenolic compounds and it is entirely appropriate, therefore, that their first joint Symposium, held in the late summer of 1977 at the Rijksuniversiteit te Gent, Belgium, should be concerned with 'The Biochem istry of Plant Phenolics. ' First occasions are often difficult, but the chief organiser of this Symposium, Professsor Ch~is van Sumere, Head of the Laboratorium voor Plantenbiochemie of the Rijksuniversiteit te Gent with his charming wife and enthu siastic staff overcame all obstacles. 664 pp. Englisch.

Although the flood of important research in this area in the past deca…de has resulted in many symposia, edited collections of papers, reviews, contributions to scientific journals, and patents, apparently no organized presentation in book form has been forthcoming. In a closely connected way, another strong impetus for writing this monograph arose out of our research programs in the Materials Research Center at Lehigh University. As part of this effort, we had naturally compiled hundreds of references and become acquainted with many leaders in the field of blend and composite research. Perhaps the most important concept stressed over and over again is that engineering materials are useful because of their complexity, not in spite of it. Blends and composites are toughened because many modes of resistance to failure are available. Although such multimechanism processes are diffi cult to describe with a unified theory. we have presented available develop ments in juxtaposition with the experimental portions. The arguments somewhat resemble the classical discussion of resonance in organic chemistry, where molecular structures increase in stability as more electronic configura tions become available. 532 pp. Englisch.

As is well known, the relationship betw…een quantum theory and ob jective reality was one of the main threads running through the researches of this French physicist. It was therefore in a fitting tribute to him on his 90th birthday that ten years ago an international conference on the same subject was convened in Perugia. On that occasion, physicists from all over the world interested in the problematics of wave-particle duality engaged in thoughtful debates (the proceedings of which were subsequently published) on recent theoretical and experimental developments in our understanding of the foundations of quantum mechanics. This time around, about 120 scientists, coming from 5 continents, in the warm and pleasant atmosphere of Trani's Colonna Conference Center focussed their discussions on recent results concerned with the EPR para dox, matter-interferometry, reality of de Broglie's waves, photon detection, macroscopic quantum coherence, alternative theories to usual quantum mechanics, special relativity, state reduction, and other related topics. The workshop was organized in plenary sessions, round tables, and poster sessions, and the present volume collects most-but not all-of the presented papers. A number of acknowledgements are due. The shift of the traditional conference time from the last part of January was caused by the 1995 Superbowl'…s choice of our preferred date for their game. The conference was dedicated to reminiscences of Julian Schwinger. The death of Eugene P. Wigner in the early part of January 1995 was observed with a deep sorrow during the conference. At about that time the news of Asim Barut's death made 1995 an inauspicious year for physicists. In the meantime physics at the frontiers marched on as it did before. There were no path-breaking discoveries, but hope and persistence were still there. In 1964 (the first Coral Gables conference) if we had asked a physicist to give us a sincere opinion on what is 'hot' in physics we would have expected him or her to point out the narrow area of their own research. The answer to this question in 1995 is still the same as it would have been in 1964. Contributions were accepted on the understanding that the editors could make certain changes leading towards a uniformity of style but accepting as a priority the importance of early publication, if necessary at the expense of stylistic perfection. Editorial notes have been inserted at infrequent intervals, sometimes to summarise discussions and at others in an attempt to clarify certain issues or to highlight conflicting opinions. Although the work has been divided amongst the editors and co editors it is only proper to acknowledge that the major role in collating and in correcting much of the material has fallen on Mrs MAske who has also typed the manuscript. It was hosted by Professor Henri Jahn, Professor of…Medicine and Chief, Department of Nephrology at the University of Strasbourg. These Workshops have become a tradition in the scientific scene of mineral metabolism. The meetings have been providing a unique framework for close interaction between scientists from various disciplines, such as nephrologists, endocrinologists, bio chemists, nutritionists, and those dealing with bone metabolism. The Workshops also created a forum for the delivery of original information, as well as state-of-the-art presentations on exciting topics of current interest in this evergrowing field of phosphate and mineral homeostasis. The Fourth International Workshop was attended by three hundred scientists from 15 countries including Austria, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Holland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States of America. The topics discussed included those dealing with the renal handling of phos phate, calcium and magnesium, intermediary phosphate metabolism and phosphate homeostasis in health and disease. Two symposia were also presented: one dealt with nephrolithiasis and its rela tion to phosphate and the other with bone metabolism. The conference was devoted to the subject of 'Global Atmospheric-Biospheric Chemistry' and was a landmark event in this area. It provided the first comprehensive report of progress under IGAC toward improving our understanding of the chemical and biological processes that determine the changing composition of the earth's atmosphere. This work is an essential component of the comprehensive International Geosphere Biosphere Program (lGBP) devoted to measuring and understanding global changes in the past and present, and predicting the future evolution of our planet. I want to devote this brief foreword to thanking several people who worked especially hard to make the conference a success and who helped to produce this volume as a record of the event. Paul Crutzen, Amram Golombek, Pamela Matson and Henning Rodhe did sterling service on the conference organizing committee. Special thanks go to Amram Golombek and Dr. Cohen, the Director of IIBR, who hosted the event in Israel. Nothing much was done with them, but computer men felt that this was the way computing ought to go: one might d…ispense with cards, and overcome many of the problems of man-machine communication. It quickly appeared that, as with computers, there had been a great under estimation of the amount of work involved, of the difficulties of programming, and of the cost. So it began to emerge that graphics was not the ultimate answer, in spite of superb demonstrations where one might watch a square being converted into a cube and then rotated. But my mind goes back to 1951 and the first computers. There, there were demonstrations of arithmetic speed and storage facility; but not much idea of actual use. However, we now understand how to use computers, and in the last year or two, significant developments in the field of graphics have led to genuine applications, and economic benefits. The equipment is still expensive, but it is becoming cheaper, more uses are being found, and f believe that we are just at the stage when the subject is gaining momentum, to become, like computers, a field of immense importance. 256 pp. Englisch.

Shvarts (Schwarz), who read and commented on the entire translated manuscript. In particular, any ambiguities as to the identity of organisms described… only by common names in the original text were removed, because the author kindly supplied the Latin names in all such cases. Com mon names are retained in the translation, but the Latin names are also added where needed. Some of the terminology used in the Russian is a transliteration from English words employed now more by European workers than Americans. I have defined these terms or noted their more common equivalents used in current American literature where it seemed useful in the text. A final chapter, 'Recent Work on the Evolutionary Ecology of Ani mals,' is presented as Appendix II to the translation of the original text. I have written this chapter in order to update the material presented in the original edition published in 1969. The chapter discusses important recent contributions relevant to the subject matter presented by Shvarts. I would like to thank W. Z. Lidicker, Jr., and Y. B. Linhart for reading this final chapter and providing very helpful suggestions and comments. I am particularly grateful to the author, S. S. The Fifth International Kinin Congress (Nov. 29-Dec. 3, 1987) provided a forum for the exchange of information and ideas on the kallikrein-kinin system. The participation of more than 350 scientists from 23 countries reflects the widespread interest and international scope of research activity in the physiological and pathological functions of the kallikrein-kinin system. A total of 275 papers including posters were presented, attesting to the unquestioned success of this Congress. These proceedings, in two volumes, contain the collective studies presented, studies of high scientific standard that provoked stimulating and fruitful discussions. Also included in these volumes are the two plenary lectures presented by Dr. H.A. Margolius (USA) and Dr. S. Nakanishi (Japan).
