Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -Ecologists have two long-standing ways to study large ecosystems such as lakes, forests, and salt-marsh estuaries. In the first, which G. E. Hutchinson has called the holological approach, the whole ecosystem is first studied as a 'black box,' and its components are investigated as needed. I…n the second, which Hutchinson has called the merological approach, the parts of the system are studied first, and an attempt is then made to build up the whole from them. For long-term studies, the holological approach has special advantages, since the general patterns and tentative hypotheses that are first worked out help direct attention to the components of the system which need to be studied in greater detail. In this approach, teams of investigators focus on major func tions and hypotheses and thereby coordinate their independent study efforts. Thus, although there have been waves, as it were, of investigators and graduate students working on different aspects of the Georgia salt-marsh estuaries (personnel at the Marine Institute on Sapelo Island changes every few years), the emphasis on the holo logical approach has resulted in a highly differentiated and well-coordinated long-term study. Very briefly, the history of the salt-marsh studies can be outlined as follows. First, the general patterns of food chains and other energy flows in the marshes and creeks were worked out, and the nature of imports and exports to and from the system and its subsystems were delimited.

This is a very broad subject that calls for broader coverage than could be included in one book issue. However, I have elected to include only certain contributions that serve as general examples of the principles involved. There are six articles on enzyme regulation in hepatocyte culture. These include arginase and argino-succi nate synthetase, y-glutamyl transferase and plasminogen activitor. Other regulatory enzymes that are discussed are protein kinases, 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate synthetases, carbamoyl phosphate synthetase, heme oxygenase, cytochrome P-450, tyrosine hydroxylase, fatty acid synthetase, acetyl eoA carboxylase, among others. Also included is the regulation of several enzyme messengers RNAs. As in the past, subscribers to the journal will receive this double volume as a continuation of regular issues of the journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. Although this volume covers the formal proceedings, an equal length of time was devoted to discussion both in large and small groups. A little of the flavour of the directions and character of the discussions will be found in the final article by David Clarkson which was written to cover this other wise uncovered area of the workshop. The volume reflects much of the current excitement in the field of plant calcium research. Many of the participants are pioneers in their res pective areas and the extent to which the last five years has seen a drama tic unfolding, a complete inversion of the role of calcium from simple macro nutrient to major metabolic and developmental controller is recounted here. The first task, obtaining approval for a symposium on the industrial applications, now seems a l…ong time ago. The idea orginated with John Stevens, probably in 1982, from his observation of papers dealing with industrial applications of the Mossbauer effect appearing in the Mossbauer Effect Reference and Data Journal. His initial suggestion for a symposium entitled 'Industrial Applications of the Mossbauer Effect' to be held at a national meeting of the American Chemical Society eventually led to the symposium at the International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies which met in Honolulu, Hawaii in December 1984. This volume is the result of the symposium at the above mentioned Congress, but is not actually the 'proceedings' of the symposium because this volume does not contain all of the over one hundred Mossbauer effect papers that were pre sented at the symposium. Rather it contains a selection of papers that the or ganizing committee for the symposium deemed most appropriate for a volume devoted to industrial applications of the Mossbauer effect. The final volume also contains six chapters that were not a part of the symposium but which are closely related to the topic. There is another difference from many proceedings. 808 pp. Englisch.

Early microscopy revealed new and previously unsuspected microstruc tures in biological and non-biological materials and thus helped to enlarge on the understanding of the relationship between structure and properties. The natural inclination of all microscopists, the desire to observe ever smaller structures, was satisfied by the construction of higher quality optical systems which reduced the aberrations limiting the usable magnification. More over, important properties of the extracellular matrix can be modulated by the interdependent actions of tumor cells and fibroblasts. The other major area of interest concerns the response of cells to extracellular signals. Recent work has begun to reveal how a remarkable diversity of cellular functions, including neuronal, proliferative, membrane--cytoskeletal, and many other kinds of re sponses, are elicited through the mediation of a relatively small and interdepen dent set of second messenger systems. These include both changes in cytoplasmic ionic balances and activation of various kinds of protein kinases. Both subjects are covered in this volume. The two areas are linked by the common theme of cellular response to an external environment that is sensed through cellular interactions with informational molecules, which are soluble agents, as well as those that are components of insoluble matrices. The total amount of charge swept out is proportional to the energy dissipated in the intrinsic region. This may include the total energy of the photon, but gen erally somewhat less. The Ge(Li) device is a semiconductor p-n device with a very large intrinsic region between the positive carrier region and the negative carrier region (P-I-N). The fabrication of this device consists of three major steps: the diffusion of the lithium into the p-type germanium to give an n-type surface region, the drifting process to obtain the intrinsic region as deeply as possible, and the surface preparation. For the first time, physicists, mathematicians, biologists, chemists, economists, and others got togeth…er to discuss the relevance of the recent progress in nonlinear classical dynamics for their own research field. Immediately after, pUblication of 'Nonlinear Science Abstracts' started, which, in turn, led to the Physica D Journal and to a rapid increase of the research activity in the whole area with the creation of numerous 'Nonlinear Centers' around the world. During these years great progress has been made in understanding the qualitative behavior of classical dynamical systems and now we can appreciate the beautiful complexity and variety of their motion. Meanwhile, an increasing number of scientists began to wonder whether and how such beautiful structures would persist in quantum motion. Indeed, mainly integrable systems have been previously con sidered by Quantum Mechanics and therefore the problem is open how to describe the qualitative behavior of systems whose classical limit is non-integrable. The present meeting was organized in view of the fact that scientists working in different fields - mathematicians, theoretical physicists, solid state physicists, nuclear physicists, chemists and others - had common problems. The most recent NATO Conference, entitled 'Manpower Planning and Organization Design,' was held in Stresa, Italy in 1977. That meeting was organized to foster research on the interrelationships between programmatic approaches to personnel planning within organizations and behavioral science approachs to organization design. From that context of corporate planning the total internal organizational perspective was the MACRO view, and the selection, assignment, care and feeding of the people was the MICRO view. Attention has been focused, for the most part, upon morphological issues and clinical matters. Although useful, this approach has many shortcomings.… The true cytoidentity of primary neoplastic cells was not established by these methods, nor could their clonal nature be recognized. The more overt changes in immunological function, such as monoclonal gammopathies and immunodeficiencies, were appre ciated as important components of these diseases. However, subtle immunological perturbations were not recognized. Furthermore, associations were not established between the lymphoreticular neoplasms on the one hand and both primary and secondary immunological abnormalities on the other. There has been considerable recent progress in the fields of immunobiology, cytology, and immunochemistry. These new approaches have proved readily applicable to studies on the lymphomas. The term 'lymphoma' has been applied to a heterogeneous group of neo plasms that involve lymphoid tissues. This term is not altogether satisfactory, since it implies that cells of primarily the lymphoid series are involved in the neoplastic process. Some neoplasms, heretofore classified as 'lymphomas,' now appear, from the results of penetrating analysis using newer methodology, to be malignan cies of the macrophage series, rather than of the lymphocytic series. These neo plasms include Hodgkin's disease and a minority of neoplasms previously referred to as 'histiocytic' lymphomas. The majority of these 'histiocytic' lymphomas are now known to be lymphoid malignancies involving the B-cell series. 784 pp. Englisch.

Caspers and other participants at the triennial congress of the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology (S. I. L. ) held in Copenhagen, Denmark (1977), the senior… editor approached the international delegates at the business meeting for approval of the concept of holding the First International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology at Sidney (near Victoria) British Columbia on May 1-4, 1979. The S. I. L. agreed to sponsor such a meeting, and this sponsorship in turn led to the provision of space and technical facilities at the Institute of Ocean Sciences Patricia Bay, the Pacific Regional headquarters of the Ocean and Aquatic Sciences component of the federal Fisheri~s and Oceans Department. The National Research Council of Canada provided travel support for a number of non-Canadian participants. Invitations were sent to as many active workers in the field as the senior editor could name, and in addition two representatives of closely allied fields were invited - Dr. V. Standen who works with closely related but terrestrial species, and Dr. J. Grassle who works with polychaetes but especially with Capitella capitata which is much like an oligochaete in some aspects of its biolog- so much so that the senior editor in his salad days succumbed to some ill-founded advice and described Capitella as a new marine tubificid! The addition of these 'outside' influences prevented the group from making a number of unfounded assumptions during discussions, and provided valuable cross-linkages. 540 pp. Englisch.

As evolution generates diversity it is not surprising that gap junctions are not the same in all systems. It is known, for 2 instance, that junctional permeability is reduced by high free [Ca +]j in some cells or by a fall in pHi in others, or enhanced by cAMP. Our knowledge of the physiological modulators of junctional permeability is still scanty. Moreover, the compartmentalization of the intracellular milieu represents an additional complication in the interpretation of many studies of cell-to-cell communication. The present volume represents an effort to provide the reader with an actualized view of the mechanisms of cell communication and of the physiologi cal and pathological implications of junctional and nonjunctional communica tion. The conference was attended by 61 physicists…from 11 countries. The conference was sponsored by the European Physical Society, the Italian Ministry of Public Education, the Italian Ministry of Technological Research, the Sicilian Regional Government and the California Institute of Technology. CONFERENCE FORMAT The Study Conference followed a new intensive format in which the state of our knowledge of the electroweak interaction, and the relation of the electroweak sector to Grand Unified and Superunified Theories was reviewed in some depth. During the two week conference, 54 experimental and theoretical talks were presented, and four evening discussion sessions were held. The Erice surroundings, the wide-ranging conference program, and the fact that nearly all of the participants were directly involved in recent major experimental or theoretical developments, led to animated and very friendly discussions. The rapid growth of the over-…eighty-five population, the group which, as recent studies have confirmed and as many of us clinicians have long suspected, has an even higher prevalence than previously quoted of dementing disorders, is the major cause of this. We are thus challenged by, as Bernard Issacs used to call it, 'the survival of the unfittest,' as well as the oPtimistic approach of 'bringing life to years,' as John F. Kennedy said. The fact is that we, as a society, tend to confuse 'treatment' and 'cure' (and 'prevention'). As the proceedings of the conference which this book represents emphasize, there is considerable work going on about the potential prevention of, or at least the reduction of, symptomatology in these illnesses by interventions genetically, chemIcally, and so forth. However, the more we find out, the more complicated it becomes, and the more heterogeneous Alzheimer's and the related disorders appear to be, not only in their manifestations (as clinicians have long recognized) but also in the individual initiating and underlying processes. Numerous surface spectroscopies have been developed in recent years intended to describe the geometric, vibrational and electronic structure of a surface. Our present understanding of surface, thin film and interfacial phenomena in solid state physics owes much to these developments. In chemistry much of the interest in surface science has come from the obvious implications to such important and diverse fields as catalysis and corrosion. The conference was hosted by the Graduate Center for Materials Research, the College of Arts and Science, and… the School of Mines and Metallurgy. It was expected that the conference would provide a forum for critical examination and review of the current and important trends in rare earth science and technology. To this end, over 170 papers were presented in both oral and poster sessions by researchers representing some nineteen countries. The collection of refereed papers in this volume attests to the fact that the objectives of the program committee were indeed realized. To start with there are two unique features here: The first is the limited attendance which should provide more meaningful discussion; the second is the availability to the world of all the information in book form after the conference. We gave considerable thought to the contents of the conference which would take advantage of the unique features. Therefore, we decided to look to the future and present material here that is not in routine use. The search for pollutants has just begun, and their presence cannot be established without some means of detection. Many substances are not known to be toxic be cause no one has studied them. Seaton's association with University College London has now stretched over a period of some 37 years, first as an undergraduate student, then as a research student, and then, successively, as Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Reader, and Professor. Seaton arrived at University College London in 1946 to become an undergraduate in the Physics Department, having just left the Royal Air Force in which he had served as a navigator in the Pathfinder Force of Bomber Command. Papers were delivered by scientists and engineers from 15 countries, and the attendees represented 19 co…untries. As has become the custom at these conferences, the sessions were intense with the coffee breaks and evenings given to informal meetings among the participants. It was a time to renew old friendships, begin new ones, exchange ideas, personally question authors of papers that appeared in the literature since the last conference and find out what was generally happening in Ion Implantation. In recent years it has beome more difficult to get funding to travel to such meetings. To assist the participating authors financial aid was solicited from industry and the Office of Naval Research. We are most grateful for their positive response to our requests. The success of the conference was in part due to their generous contributions. The Program Committee had the unhappy task of the reviewing of more than 170 abstracts. The result of their labors was well worth their effort. Much thanks goes to them for molding the conference into an accurate representation of activities in the field. Behind the scenes in Boulder, local arrangements were handled ably by Graeme Eldridge.
