Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Volume 7 of Developments in Applied Spectroscopy is a collection of forty-two papers selected from those that were presented at the 7th National Meeting of the Society of Applied Spectroscopy, held (in place of the 19th Mid-America Symposium on Spectroscopy) in Chicago, May 13-17, 1968. The…se papers, selected by the editors and reviewed by persons knowledgeable in the field, are those of the symposium type and not those pertaining to specific research topics that one would expect to be submitted to a journal. It is the opinion of the committee that this type of publication has an important place in the literature. The relatively large number of papers would result in quite a sizable volume if bound in one set of covers. For this reason, and to present the material in areas of more specific iilterest, Volume 7 was divided into two parts, Part A, Physical-Inorganic, and Part B, Physical-Organic Developments. The 7th National Meeting was sponsored by the Chicago Section as host in cooperation with the St. Louis, New England, Penn York, Niagara-Frontier, Cincinnati, Ohio Valley, New York, Baltimore-Washington, North Texas, Rocky Mountain, and Southeastern Sections of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy and the Chicago Gas Chromatography Group. The editors wish to express their appreciation to the authors and to those who helped with the reviewing. The latter include Dr. Elma Lanterman, Mr. John E. Forrette, Dr. Carl Moore, Dr. B. Jaselskis, Mr. H. G. Zelinski, Mr.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Beyond their obvious role of a barrier between blood and tissue, vascular endothelial cells are now firmly established as active and essential participants in a host of crucial physiological and pathophysiological functions. Probably the two most important factors responsible for promoting…the current knowledge of endothelial functions are 1) observations in the late sixties-early seventies that many non-ventilatory properties of the lung could be attributed to the pulmonary endothelium and 2) the establishment, in the early and mid-seventies of procedures for routine culture of vascular endothelial cells. Many of these endothelial functions require the presence of receptors on the surface of the plasma membrane. There is now evidence for the existence among others of muscarinic, a-and /3-adrenergic, purine, insulin, histamine, bradykinin, lipoprotein, thrombin, paf, fibronectin, vitronectin, interleukin and albumin receptors. For some of these ligands, there is evidence only for the existence of endothelial binding sites. Traditionally, agonist binding must elicit a response for the binding site to be considered a receptor and, in some cases, the nature of the response resulting from the interaction of a substance with the endothelium remains unclear. It is beyond the scope of this introduction to even enumerate the various endothelial homeostatic processes. This monograph contains the proceedings of the Advanced Studies Institute on 'Vascular Endothelium: Receptors and Transduction Mechanisms' held in Porto Carras, Greece from June 18-29, 1988.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Hyperbilirubinemia of the neonate and the related risk of brain damage with conseguent important alterations in motor development, particularly in sick preterm babies, remains a major problem in nurseries throughout the world. Since its introduction in the 1950's phototherapy has been used…for reducing serum bilirubin concentrations in the newborn with hyperbilirubinemia; however, only recently the photoprocesses invoked by light on various substrates including bilirubin have been clari fied in sufficient detail. Light treatment actually exemplifies the intimate relationship between the clinical and basic sciences: the better understanding of the mechanism of phototherapy as a result of investigations initiated in the laboratory has been extended to the bedside as new types of lamps or new schedules of treatment. As a consequence, phototherapy of hyperbilirubinemia has emerged as a well-established branch of photomedicine, based on molecular photo biology, scientific method, and creative use of physics and sophis ticated electrooptical capabilities. The collaboration and exchange of information between workers in different basic and clinical di sciplines is likely to stimulate a further optimization of photo therapy. The purpose of this monograph is to discuss some of the new aspects of bilirubin metabolism and phototherapeutic treatment. Bilirubin conjugation in the fetal and early neonatal life, the mechanism of bilirubin entry into the brain, the measurements of bilirubin concentration in the skin and serum bilirubin binding capacity are discussed by a number of prominent neonatologists.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This volume presents a collection of papers given at the 16th Mid -America Symposium on Spectroscopy held in Chicago, June 14-17, 1965. The Mid-America Symposium is sponsored annually by the Chicago Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy in cooperation with the St. Louis, Niagara F…rontier, Cleveland, Detroit, lndianapolis, and Milwaukee Sections of the Society and the Chicago Gas Chromatography Discussion Group. Although we refer to this meeting as the Mid-America Symposium, it continues to attract attendance, interest, and inquiry from many parts of the world. Sessions on lnfrared, Raman, Ultraviolet, Visible, Emis sion, Flame, Atomic Absorption, Nuclear Particle, Gamma Ray, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, X-Ray Spectroscopy, Spec troscopy, Spectrophosphorimetry, and Gas Chromatography provided interesting papers involving both applied and theo retical principles. This volume continues a series of the Proceedings initiated in 1961 and is composed of a collection of 37 papers presented at this meeting. It is the opinion of the Symposium Committee that although not a complete account of the proceedings, publication of this collection as a reference is warranted. As editors of this volume, we wish to express our gratitude to the authors who gave their time and effort in submitting their manuscripts so that this volume could be published. The Symposium Committee, L. S. Gray, W. Baer, Vivian Biske, W. Los eki , M. S. Wang, F. Leahy, J. L. Ogilvie, B. D.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In contrast to the great diversity of other crime and delinquency research measures, those drawn from the CPI and the MMPI have much in common. They are taken from standardized instruments administered under controlled conditions, w…ith known stimulus properties and validity indicators. The CPI and MMPI measures will frequently be instruments of choice in research on personality and psychodynamics of offenders. CHAPTER 6 Law Enforcement and Police This chapter encompasses a variety of scales that refer to law enforcement or police agencies. Unfortunately, in the case of many scales, these terms are used simply with the assumption that the respondents understand the concepts and use them in the same way as researchers. In other cases, however, specific policing functions are identified and described. As noted in Chapter 3, a standard order of scale presentation is followed. First the attitudes scales are presented, followed by the behavior ratings, per sonality measures, milieu ratings, prediction measures and finally the very broad category of description. After the reviews are completed within each subcategory, other scales in that category are listed. (See Chapter 2 for a description of the criteria that were used in deciding upon whether a scale would be reviewed or simply listed. ) Listed scales are presented by title and bibliographic reference, followed by a very brief description. 644 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Activity in any theoretical area is usually stimulated by new experimental techniques and the resulting opportunity of measuring phenomena that were previously inaccessible. Such has been the case in the area under consideration her…e beginning about fifteen years ago when the possibility of studying chemical reactions in crossed molecular beams captured the imagination of physical chemists, for one could imagine investigating chemical kinetics at the same level of molecular detail that had previously been possible only in spectroscopic investigations of molecular stucture. This created an interest among chemists in scattering theory, the molecular level description of a bimolecular collision process. Many other new and also powerful experimental techniques have evolved to supplement the molecular beam method, and the resulting wealth of new information about chemical dynamics has generated the present intense activity in molecular collision theory. During the early years when chemists were first becoming acquainted with scattering theory, it was mainly a matter of reading the physics literature because scattering experiments have long been the staple of that field. It was natural to apply the approximations and models that had been developed for nuclear and elementary particle physics, and although some of them were useful in describing molecular collision phenomena, many were not. The most relevant treatise then available to students was Mott and Massey's classic The Theory of Atomic Collisions, \* but, as the title implies, it dealt only sparingly with the special features that arise when at least one of the collision partners is a molecule. 336 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Volume 6 of Developments in Applied Spectroscopy presents a collection of twenty-eight selected papers from those that were pre sented at the Eighteenth Mid-America Symposium on Spectroscopy held in Chicago, May 15 to 18, 1967. In g…eneral, the papers selected by the editors are those of the symposium type and not those papers pertaining to a specific research topic that one expects to be sub mitted to a journal. Not all of the submitted papers were included. Some revisions could not meet the deadline and others were not accepted based on the advice of the reviewers. It is the opinion of the committee that this type of publication has an important place in the literature. The Mid-America Symposium is sponsored annually by the Chicago Section in cooperation with the Cincinnati, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Niagara Frontier, and St. Louis Sections of the Society of Applied Spectroscopy, and the Chicago Gas Chromatography Group. Although the Mid-America is often thought of as a regional meeting, its attendees and authors generally come from all parts of the United States and Canada. Both applied and theoretical principles were provided in sessions on X-ray, emission, atomic-absorption, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, Raman, nuclear-particle, and gamma ray spectroscopy; activation analysis; and gas chromatography. In addition, there were symposia on absorption spectra of biologically significant molecules; the structure of ice, water, and aqueous solu tions; air and water pollution analyses; and the practical application of statistics. 416 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -It would have been difficult at the beginning of the 80's to have predicted that by the end of the decade, Medical Virology would have become one of the most important topics in the area of both basic and clinical research. Although… we were expecting a progressive increase in awareness of the role played by viruses in different diseases, we did not expect the outbreak of a fatal disease that was going to shake the roots of our society. The appearance of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) in the early 80's, has prompted a unique re search impetus in the area of Medical Virology. The knowledge that we are gaining in our attempt to understand the biology of HIV-1 and the immuno logical response to this virus should not only help us control the spread of this virus, but should also help us to better understand other viral infections. Let us hope that during the 1990's we can learn how to control HIV-1 infections so that by the end of the decade, no more human lives succumb to an infection with this virus. The NATO Course on Regulation of Function and Growth of Eukaryo tic Cells by Intracellular Cyclic Nucleotides was organized in Wepion (Belgium) from September 23 to October 1, 1974, by L. Birn baumer…(Chicago), B.L. Brown (London), R.W. Butcher (Worcester), J.E. Dumont (Brussels), M. Paiva (Brussels) and G. Van den Berghe (Louvain), under the benevolent and most efficient aegis of Dr. T. Kester (NATO, Brussels). The formula of the Course was inspired by the Gordon Con ference with its combination of a pleasant, friendly and easygoing atmosphere together with a solid and critical scientific diet offered in the morning and evening, the afternoon being free. For these reasons, the meeting was located in a pleasant motel in beautiful surroundings by the side of the Meuse river, in the country, but close to the town of Narnur. Everything, absolutely everything, from swimming to tennis, to horse riding, was available to make the afternoons agreeable and to facilitate social contacts. 864 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume presents some of the papers from the 15th Mid-America Symposium on Spectroscopy held in Chicago on June 2-5, 1964. The Mid-America Symposium is sponsored annually by the Chicago Section of the Society for Applied Spectro…scopy, in cooperation with the St. Louis, Niagara Frontier, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Milwaukee sections of the Society and the Chicago Gas Chromatography Discussion Group. Although basically a regional meeting, the Symposium continues to draw enthusiastic attendance from coast to coast and numerous foreign countries. The present volume contains 45 of the 110 papers presented at the Symposium. It is with some misgiving that we offer this volume as the proceedings of the meeting with less than half of the total papers included. However, it is the opinion of the Symposium Committee that publication of the excellent material available from the Symposium provides a valuable addition to the literature in the field of spectroscopy. Response to previous volumes of this series seems to verify this opinion. As Chairman of the Symposium and Editor of this volume, I express my sincere appreciation to the authors whose manuscripts make up this volume. I also extend my gratitude to the following members of the Symposium Committee whose time and effort made the 15th Mid-America Symposium a success. Mr. Russell J. Hansen, Exhibits; Mr. Robert L. 560 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -These proceedings contain the papers presented during the 14th annual High Energy Physics meeting convened under the aegis of Orbis Scientiae 1977. The title 'Deeper Pathways in High Energy Physics' was adopted to indicate either fu…rther penetration into the nature of the structure of the elementary particle or the deepening of the continuously trodden path that gets gradually deeper and deeper, evolving into a trench. In the latter instance, the visibility of the real nature of elementary particles may be getting dimmer and dimmer. It is hoped that some of the papers in these proceedings do, indeed, contain further revelations on the 'deeper' nature of elementary particles. We must not be overly charmed with 'charm' even if it may fit the data of the current generation of e+ and e experiments. It would be much less than prophetic to say that a complete and totally satisfactory theory com~ising the entire physical reality is yet to be discovered, and there is presumably no paper of that kind in these proceedings. Despite this short coming, the editors do not wish to hide their admiration for the caliber of the papers contributed by the participants of Orbis Scientiae 1977. Appreciation is extended to Mrs. Helga S. Billings, Mrs. Elva Brady, and Ms. Yvonne L. Leber for their skillful typing of the proceedings, which they have performed with great enthusiasm and dedication. Orbis Scientiae 1977 received some support from the Energy Research and Development Administration. 752 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The successful application of x-r~ diffraction techniques and x-r~ spectrometry depends in large measure on the availability of dependable standards and reference data. The preparation of such standards in the fields of metallurgy,…geology, life sciences, and other disciplines is both costly and time consuming. As a result. the necessary standards for effective utilization of existing instrumentation are often not available. One of the purposes of the invited papers in this 22nd Annual Denver X-Ray Conference was tc review the status of programs to prepare such standards and reference data. Simultaneously, it seemed appropriate to examine the role of sampling both in terms of standards and samples to be analyzed. The first section of the invited papers focuses on the standards and reference data problems. In addition, many of the contributed papers offer information on this theme. The second topic in the invited papers consi ders the problem of sampling. If we recognize that analyses are conducted on samples which vary in size from several grams to a few micrograms or less, the magnitude of the random and systematic error components of sam pling on the quality of results should be obvious. Many of the contributed papers in such fields as air pollution and similar disciplines speak clear ly to the difficulty of obtaining 'representative' samples. The papers contained in this volume and the many lively discussions such as the panel discussion at the close of the first session of papers should stimulate further attention to this vital topic. 612 pp. Englisch.

Differential growth creates form: external form through growth rates which vary from one part of the body to another and one tissue to another; and inter…nal form through the series of time-entrained events which build up in each cell the special ized complexity of its particular function. We make no distinction, then, between growth and development, and if we have not included accounts of differentiation it is simply because we had to draw a quite arbitrary line somewhere. lt is only rather recently that those involved in pediatrics and child health have come to realize that growth is the basic science peculiar to their art. It is a science which uses and incorporates the traditional disciplines of anatomy, physiology, biophysics, biochemistry, and biology. It is indeed a part of biology, and the study of human growth is a part of the curriculum of the rejuvenated science of Human Biology. What growth is not is a series of chärts of height and weight. Growth standards are useful and necessary, and their construction is by no means void of intellectual challenge. They are a basic instrument in pediatric epidemiology. But they do not appear in this book, any more than clinical accounts of growth disorders. This appears to be the first large handbook-in three volumes-devoted to Human Growth. 656 pp. Englisch.

Salazar Salinas, who is credited with authoring Bole tin numeros 40 and 41 (lnstituto Geologico de Mexico, 1922, 1923), has an author been able to provide readers with a comprehensive volume containing information that is both authentic and reliable on Mexican mineralogy, mineral species, and localities. This volume is the most complete synthesis about Mexican minerals and their occurrences to date. It is richly illustrated with photographs and drawings, is well documented, and is organized into four sections, making it easy to use and enjoyable to read. The introduction contains an interesting summary of the mining history and the development of mineralogy. It also describes, in a condensed but accurate and stimulating manner, the geography and the mineralogy of the country, dividing it into eleven mineral provinces. The author discusses eight of the more important mining districts in Mexico, which produce fine mineral speci mens. There is also a chronology of historical, geological, and mineralogical events in Mexico. This is followed by a bibliography with over 500 references on the subject. 484 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the last five years, the study of metal hydrides has ex panded enormously due to the potential technological importance of this class of materials in hydrogen based energy conversion schemes. The scope of this activity has been w…orldwide among the industrially advanced nations. There has been a consensus among researchers in both fundamental and applied areas that a more basic understanding of the properties of metal/hydrogen syster;,s is required in order to provide a rational basis for the selection of materials for specific applications. The current worldwide need for and interest in research in metal hydrides indicated the timeliness of an Advanced Study Insti tute to provide an in-depth view of the field for those active in its various aspects. The inclusion of speakers from non-NATO coun tries provided the opportunity for cross-fertilization of ideas for future research. While the emphasis of the Institute was on basic properties, there was a conscious effort to stimulate interest in the application of metal hydrides to solar/hydrogen energy conver sion schemes in land areas where solar energy has promise as a primary energy source. In addition to the lectures, several seminars were given which treated topics of special interest in greater detail. 396 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -During the past two decades, a significant international research effort has been di rected toward understanding the composition and regulation of the preocular tear film. This effort has been motivated by the recognition that the t…ear film plays an essential role in maintaining corneal and conjunctival integrity, protecting against microbial challenge, and preserving visual acuity. In addition, research has been stimulated by the knowledge that alteration or deficiency of the tear film, which occurs in countless individuals throughout the world, may lead to desiccation of the ocular surface, ulceration and perfo ration of the cornea, an increased incidence of infectious disease, and, potentially, pro nounced visual disability and blindness. To promote further progress in this field of vision research, the Second International Conference on the Lacrimal Gland, Tear Film and Dry Eye Syndromes: Basic Science and Clinical Relevance was held at the Southampton Princess Resort in Bermuda November 16-19, 1996. This conference was organized and directed by David A. Sullivan, Ph. D. , codirected by Darlene A. Dartt, Ph. D. , and Michele A. Meneray, Ph. D. , and sponsored by the Schepens Eye Research Institute (Boston, MA), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. The meeting was designed to assess critically the current knowledge and 'state of the art' research on the structure and function of lacrimal tissue, tears, and the ocular sur face in both health and disease. 1108 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Water is recognized as being a critically important determinant of the properties of many foods. It is therefore appropriate to devote a meeting to the topic. The first such meeting was organized by the late Ron Duckworth, and held…in 1974 at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. As a result of this first meeting, the organization known as International Symposium on the Properties of Water (ISOPOW) was born, and since that first ISOPOW meeting there have been five international meetings. At each meeting, participants from academia and from industry have shared state of the science information pertinent to the role of water in foods. Each meeting has served as a review of the current state of knowledge. ISOPOW 6 is the first of these meetings where Ron Duckworth's presence has not been felt, though he clearly attended the meeting in spirit. A lively group of academics and industrial scientists assembled in Santa Rosa, California, to discuss the current state of the science. As meeting chairperson, I must acknowledge the tremendous contributions made by the organizing committee, by the session chairpersons and by the central committee. Without all their help, nothing could have been achieved. Most important to the success of the meeting, however, was the very active participation of all attendees. In all seven sessions, the papers were excellent and their discussion was very spirited. 536 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Plenum Press series, Monographs in Inorganic Chemistry, is intended to fill an obvious need for high-level surveys of recent research in that area, particularly in matters which go beyond the traditional or classical bound aries… of the subject. The study of n-bonding of hydrocarbon groups (and their derivatives) to metals is exactly that kind of subject, for it provides a new way of understanding the behavior of metals (which constitute four-fifths of all the chemical elements). In addition, n-bonding has expanded the intriguing area of organometallic chemistry threefold, bringing in all the transition metals, the lanthanides, and the actinides. So much has been discovered and developed in the area of n-bonded 'complexes' of the metals that important new industrial processes based on such substances have been developed. A truly comprehensive review of all n-bonded compounds of the metals would now result in an impossibly large and expensive volume, and would require monthly revision. Instead, the present authors have wisely decided to write a survey which outlines the general aspects of preparation, properties, structure, reactions, and uses of such compounds-a survey which can serve as a textbook, but which can also lead the more experienced practitioner to the most advanced literature on the subject. They have clarified and condensed the subject by means of good organization and a liberal use of diagrams-features which will please the general reader. 228 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The chlorination of aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds is one of the oldest and also one of the most important reactions since it heralded the rise of the heavy organic chemicals industry. Reports of polychlorobenzenes and polych…loropyridines date back well into the last century and it is of historical interest that Kekule was probably the first to have prepared pentachloropyridine. Yet, in spite of the ancient lineage and the practical as well as theoretical significance of polychloroaromatics, there has existed so far no review exclusively devoted to their chemistry. Three inter national symposia on polychloro-chemistry since 1968, in which polychloroaromatics figured prominently in discussions amongst chemists and biologists, are evidence for the growing importance of this subject. Information on the chemistry and uses of the numerous polychloroaromatic compounds has remained buried largely in the journal and patent literature and only occasionally receives sparse and incidental treatment in an article primarily dealing with a specific ring system. 556 pp. Englisch.
