Together with the increased Internet capacity and new access technologies, network congestion and the use of older technologies, wireless access, and peer-to-peer networking are increasing the heteroge…neity of the Internet. Applications should provide gracefully degraded levels of service when network conditions are poor, and enhanced services when network conditions exceed expectations. Existing adaptive technologies, which are primarily end-to-end or proxy-based and often focus on a single deficient link, can perform poorly in heterogeneous networks. Instead, heterogeneous networks frequently require multiple, coordinated, and distributed remedial actions. Conductor: Distributed Adaptation for Heterogeneous Networks describes a new approach to graceful degradation in the face of network heterogeneity - distributed adaptation - in which adaptive code is deployed at multiple points within a network. The feasibility of this approach is demonstrated by conductor, a middleware framework that enables distributed adaptation of connection-oriented, application-level protocols. By adapting protocols, conductor provides application-transparent adaptation, supporting both existing applications and applications designed with adaptation in mind. Conductor: Distributed Adaptation for Heterogeneous Networks introduces new techniques that enable distributed adaptation, making it automatic, reliable, and secure. In particular, we introduce the notion of semantic segmentation, which maintains exactly-once delivery of the semantic elements of a data stream while allowing the stream to be arbitrarily adapted in transit. We also introduce a secure architecture for automatic adaptor selection, protecting user data from unauthorized adaptation. These techniques are described both in the context of conductor and in the broader context of distributed systems. Finally, this book presents empirical evidence from several case studies indicating that distributed adaptation can allow applications to degrade gracefully in heterogeneous networks, providing a higher quality of service to users than other adaptive techniques. Further, experimental results indicate that the proposed techniques can be employed without excessive cost. Thus, distributed adaptation is both practical and beneficial. Since originally the complete process was too complex, it has been split up in several - more or less independen-…phases. In the last 40 years powerful algorithms have been developed to find optimal solutions for each of these steps. However, the interaction of these different algorithms has not been considered for a long time. This leads to quality loss e. g. in cases where highly optimized netlists fit badly onto the target architecture. Since the resulting circuits are often far from being optimal and insufficient regarding the optimization criteria, like area and delay, several iterations of the complete design process have to be carried out to get high quality results. This is a very time consuming and costly process. For this reason, some years ago the idea of one-pass synthesis came up. There were two main approaches how to guarantee that a design got 'first time right' : 1. Combining levels that were split before, e. g. to use layout information already during the logic synthesis phase. 2. Restricting the optimization in one level such that it better fits to the next one. So far, several approaches in these two directions have been presented and new techniques are under development. In this book we describe the new paradigm that is used in one-pass synthesis and present examples for the two techniques above. 196 pp. Englisch.

This work concentrates on optical packet-switched networking in local and metro area networks for realizing high-performance applications like virtual re ality, medical imaging, and supercomputing. It is well known that in those networks using a star, bus, or ring shared medium, an access protocol is nec essary to guarantee controlled and fair access for all attached nodes. Similar access protocols are to be developed and analyzed for WDM local and metro area networks. Already, many media access protocols for these networks have been described in the literature. However, some aspects of Quality-of-Service (QoS) for different service classes are still an open issue and subject to inten sive research activities. This lack of understanding is reflected in a recent survey conducted by the National Science Board (2000), summarized in Science & Engineering Indicators. ' As shown in Table 1. 1, the findings of the survey indicated that many Americans, despite a high level of interests in such matters, are not as well-informed about technological issues as they are about other policy issues. Wavelength Division Mul tiplexing (WDM) with many hundreds of wavelength channels per fiber is ex tensively being exploited in wide area networks. With respect to the ongoing trend towards a completely packet-switched mode of operation for all services, WDM networks must be prepared accordingly. This work concentrates on optical packet-switched networking in local and metro area networks for realizing high-performance applications like virtual re ality, medical imaging, and supercomputing. It is well known that in those networks using a star, bus, or ring shared medium, an access protocol is nec essary to guarantee controlled and fair access for all attached nodes. Similar access protocols are to be developed and analyzed for WDM local and metro area networks. Already, many media access protocols for these networks have been described in the literature. However, some aspects of Quality-of-Service (QoS) for different service classes are still an open issue and subject to inten sive research activities. In the introduction, the author, Dr. Kemal Bengi, gives a short classification of media access protocols and network architectures for WDM local and metro area networks. Since originally the complete process was too complex, it has been split up in several - more or less independen- phas…es. In the last 40 years powerful algorithms have been developed to find optimal solutions for each of these steps. However, the interaction of these different algorithms has not been considered for a long time. This leads to quality loss e. g. in cases where highly optimized netlists fit badly onto the target architecture. Since the resulting circuits are often far from being optimal and insufficient regarding the optimization criteria, like area and delay, several iterations of the complete design process have to be carried out to get high quality results. This is a very time consuming and costly process. For this reason, some years ago the idea of one-pass synthesis came up. There were two main approaches how to guarantee that a design got 'first time right' : 1. Combining levels that were split before, e. g. to use layout information already during the logic synthesis phase. 2. Restricting the optimization in one level such that it better fits to the next one. So far, several approaches in these two directions have been presented and new techniques are under development. Others surely could understand the analysis as another assault on our decentralized legal and school systems that should retain the right to balance the needs of communities, parents, schools, and students.
