I had been amazed to find that not a single book, to my mind, adequately addressed the psy chological symptoms and manifestations of both common and rare medical illness. It seemed to me that there was a need for a work which would achieve the following goals: First, it would assist in the differential diagnosis of functional psychiatric symptoms versus symptoms secondary to recog nized or unrecognized medical illness; second, it would elucidate the psy chological symptoms resulting from pharmacologic and other therapeutic interventions in medical illness; and third, it would examine the use of psychopharmacological agents in the presence of medical illness and the drugs used to treat that illness. Dr. Jefferson is Board Certified in both internal medicine and psychiatry, and both Drs. Jefferson and Marshall have extensive clinical experience from their many years of consultation/liaison work in psychiatry. Their experience and expertise have resulted in what I believe to be a monumental contri bution to the literature.

Neuware - The rapid development of powerful pulsed lasers is at the origin of a conside rable interest in studying the response of an atom, a molecule (or a solid) to a strong electromagnetic field. It is now possible to produce at the laboratory scale, ultra-short 13 pulses with a duration of 100 fe…mtoseconds (10- second) and a power of the order 12 of 1 terawatt (10 Watt). Under these conditions, very high peak intensities may be obtained and electric fields exceeding typical electron binding fields in atoms are generated. The interaction of an atom or a molecule with such electromagnetic fields has a highly non-linear character which leads to unexpected phenomena. Amongst them, - above-threshold ionization (ATI) i.e. the absorption of additional photons in excess of the minimal number necessary to overcome the ionization potential and its molecular counterpart, above-threshold dissociation (ATD); - generation of very high harmonics of the driving field; - stabilization of one-electron systems in strong fields. These processes were the main topics of two international meetings which were held in 1989 and 1991 in the United States under the common name SILAP (Super-Intense Laser-Atom Physics).

As part of its advanced… study program, the Center conducts workshops, seminars, and conferences on topics related to the biomedical interests of the Scholars-in Residence. Professor Torsten Teorell came to the Center in 1970 as one of the first Scholars. In 1971 and 1972, he spent several months at the Center devoting his attention to contemporary problems in the application of pharmacoki netics to experimental and clinical pharmacology. As one of the founders of pharmacokinetics, Professor Teorell has made many contributions to the field since he first presented a formal multicompartment model for the analysis of drug action and drug metabolism in 1937 (Teorell, 1937). Since the appearance of his original paper, pharmacodynamics, or pharmacoki netics, has become increasingly important as a tool for the study of drug action in patients. The translation of experimental pharmacological findings into therapeutic regimens is today increasingly dependent on ade qua te models of drug action. The purpose of the conference, of which this book is the proceedings, was to discuss contemporary findings in this important biomedical research field. Neuware - For the last eighteen years we have been deeply involved in a cooperative effort with our Latin American colleagues in genetics, biochemistry, physiology, and molecular biology. We have been in close contact with scientists in a number of centers and have helped to organize symposia, worksh…ops, and so forth, in an effort to accelerate their development and make their substantial work known. These symposia in Latin America have been quite successful. The fifteenth will take place in Brasilia in 1977. At the request of colleagues, we are in the process of developing a similar series in Asia. The first very successful symposium was held in Calcutta in 1973. We were most pleased when Dr. Amir Muhammed, Vice Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Lyallpur suggested that we hold a symposium on a topic of great importance to Pakistan, Genetic Control of Diversity in Plants, under the auspices of the University of Agriculture. It is our hope that this symposium will be followed by additional ones in Pakistan as well as in other countries in the Far East. Leadership is quickly developing in the hands of outstanding scientists in these countries, and we appreciate the opportunity to cooperate with them. We are especially grateful to the Natiohal Science Foundation for makingPL- 480 funds available which made this symposium possible.

Neuware - In this volume, the third of our series, the emphasis has shifted from the theoretical and experimental to the more clinical and practical aspects of alcoholism. Where, in the earlier volumes, more attention was directed to animal than human studies, in this volume, almost all material deal…s with the human condition. The clinical manifestations of alcoholism may be divided into two major aspects, that of the disease itself and that of its complications. This separation is to some extent artificial since, in a sense, the natural history of the disease is a function of the development of certain complicating mechanisms. These mechanisms in turn either become part and parcel of the underlying condition -alcoholism-or give rise to a new set of clinical variables characterized as 'medical complications. ' At this point, the dichotomy becomes real. The disease alcoholism tends to be seen as a distinct psychosocial entity and to be treated with psychosocial techniques. The 'medical complications' are more clearly envisioned as being within the legitimate domain of medical practice and are treated by physicians who often tend to ignore the underlying alcoholism. The 'patient' is sometimes lost in between. The major thrust of this volume is an attempt to describe the mechanisms of alcoholism as they are now known, in such a way as to establish a continuum between the disease alcoholism and its 'medical complications.

Neuware - Since the third Workshop on 'Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena' in 1973, one area within the scope of this con ference received increased attention: laser fusion. This possi bility was emphasized in February 1977 in a Seminar on US energy policies at The Hartford Graduate Cente…r by John F. O'Leary, Head of the Federal Energy Administration, who said that 'by the year 2100, --- laser fusion will be coming along, giving us a new age of choice'. Efforts in research and development were stepped up to investigate new concepts of laser ignition of controlled nuclear reactions. Here, one expects no radioactive waste from fuel. The deuterium-tritium reaction - the only one which may be possible with magnetic field confinement in tokamaks - has a highly radio active tritium ~ycle, while, in principle, laser reactions are possible with pure deuterium, hydrogen-boron or others. The worldwide progress in laser compression was not only stim ulated by the energy crisis, but also by its advancements. In our first Workshop in 1969 F. F10ux of the French Limei1 Laboratories described his experiments, which led, only one month later, to the production of fusion neutrons in such large numbers as had not been achieved up to then (see appendix of Vol. I these Proceedings).

The style of the speakers in the discussion has been preserved as far as possible and not reduced to a strictly grammatical format. 3. Where references to illustrations (e.g., on the blackboard) are made, the comments have been left unaltered and many are understandable. Removing them detracted from the sense. 4. The air of informality in the proceedings has been preserved so far as possible. 5. The responsibility for the discussion rests solely with the editors, and no contributor has had the opportunity of correcting what he said. 6. For example, automated search and identification of particulates has become a standard procedure in environmental and occupational health. The procedure, however, has yet to find its way into forensic laboratories for analysis of gunshot residue particles. This volume represents a beginning for collaboration and exchange of ideas between such areas of study with diverse interests but similar analytical problems. It is virtually certain that this effort will also interest other electron microscopists in some novel scientific problems with criminal and societal relevance. Since the pioneer work of Mc Cord and Fridovitch, growing interest has been focused on the study of the role of oxyradicals role in pathology. This interest is reflected in the exponential increase in the number of papers on free radicals, the success of specialized journals and books on this theme, and the organization of national and international meetings. These meetings have discussed, from.a broad point of view, the problems concerning the mechanisms of production of free radicals, their effects on cell CO!1$tituants (lipids, proteins, nucleic acids) and cell function, the methods of analysis of these phenomena, the pathological states in which free radicals may be involved, natural biological defense systems, and the design of 'antiradical' therapies. But it is now well established that the most common target of oxy free radicals are membrane lipids because of their chemical nature (cholesterol in saturation, malonic linkage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA' and of their regular structural arrangement (monolayers in lipoproteins, bilayers in cell membranes). Toward the end of that course, the class reviewed the literature on display characteristics and design. The univers…al criticism voiced in those reviews was that there was lots of hardware information but no criteria upon which one could base a sound design. Though one could learn all about the size and brightness of various displays, one could not form any judgment about how ef fectively the display transferred information to an observer. As I reviewed our nearly completed text, an announcement crossed my desk stating that one of the professional societies in a seminar was to consider if one should not attempt to formulate a theory concerning information transfer from displays to an observer. That was the first title chosen for our book, before our publisher told us that 'that was a paragraph, not a title.
