During a discussion about the increasing number of specialized journals and monographs, Dr. Becker pointed out that n…one covered both the clinical and molecular aspects of neurotropic virus infections, and he urged us to develop such a book with the help of colleagues who were conducting highly-regarded research in their individual areas related to neurotropic viruses. The responses to our request were gratifying, and each contribution provided both a comprehensive clinical description of the neurologic disease produced by a specific virus and an up-to-date review of the current research in the pathogenesis of the disease, with particular attention given to molecular mechanisms. Most, but not all chapters were written by clinical neurologists who applied basic science strategies and methodologies to the question of how neurotropic viruses produce disease. other chapters were written by virologists known for their longstanding commitment and expertise in the analysis of the pathogenesis of neurotropic virus infections. Thus, this unique monograph should be valuable to all clinicians caring for patients with CNS viral diseases and to 'neurovirologists' needing an update of the clinical and molecular pathogenesis of neurotropic virus infections. While this monograph was being prepared, a rapidly expanding literature indicated that the human lenteviruses, human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) and HTLV-1 were highly neurotropic.

Yet until recently, old people were systematically exduded from participating in drug trials and similar investigations. As a result, knowledge regarding incidence, natural his…tory and management of depression in the elderly are somewhat limited. It is now well-established that old people are sensitive to most psychotropic drugs and they tend to suffer from adverse effects and side effects of antidepressant drugs more frequently than any other age group. These are considered to be due to age-related physiological changes. In addition, because of the frequent association with multiple pathology, the elderly are likely to receive polypharmacy which further complicates the management of antidepressant drug therapy. The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive guidance on the drug therapy of depression for the dinicians involved in the health care of the elderly. In the first section, epidemiology, presentations and assessment of depression in old age and neuroendocrine abnormalities observed in patients with depression are briefly discussed. However, it mainly deals with the problems of antidepressant drug therapy, such as which antidepressant to prescribe, how to monitor efficacy and side effects, what is the adequate dose, how long to treat a single episode of depression and who requires long term medication. Information regarding pharmacology, side effects, adverse effects, drug interaction and pharmacokinetics of most currently available drugs are provided. Special emphasis has been given on continuation therapy and the choice of an antidepressant drug and their long term safety. 316 pp. Englisch.

It is now quite out of the… question to considcr a laboratory dealing with the analysis of biological materials that is not equipped with an extensive range of instrumentation. Recent years have also seen a dramatic improvement in the ease with which such instruments can be used, and the quality and quantity of the analytical data that they can produce. This is due in no sm all part to the ubiquitous use of microprocessors and computers for instrumental control. However, under these circumstances there is areal danger of the analyst adopting a 'black box' mentality and not treating the analytical data produced in accordance with the limitations that may be inherent in the method used. Such a problem can only be overcome if the operator is fully aware of both the theoretical and instrumental constraints relevant to the technique in question. As the complexity and sheer volume of material in undergraduate courses increases, there is a tendency to reduce the amount of fundamental material that is taught prior to embarking on the more applied aspects. They formed a professional interest group called the Specific Interest Group…in Bilingualism because of the need felt by speech therapists to have some forum for discuss ing the challenges posed by the assessment and treatment of the bilingually language handicapped. In these regular discussion groups it became clear that similar experiences were encountered by all speech therapists working with these client populations up and down the country. They centred on managing the linguistic diversity, the need for develop mental language information, the need for appropriate assessment protocols, the recruitment of bilingual staff and appreciating the positive perspective of working in this field. In the UK the range of languages is extensive. Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Greek, Turkish, Polish, Ukranian, Hong Kong Chinese, Vietnamese Chinese, Creole, Black English, Bengali, Gujerati and Panjabi cover the main ethnolinguistic groups. The basic principles of good research are of course timeless and apply to enquiry in any discipline. However, detail changes; there are new aids to reviewing literature, the increased emphasis in social science research has been matched by a range of new methods of collecting information, computers have revolutionized how data is handled and statistics is an ever-developing science in its own right. The single most signifi cant factor in holding up the creation of such a book was the lack of expertise in one person of… all the areas of paediatric nursing. The problem was resolved by producing an edited book, covering various specialities of paediatric nursing. Undoubtedly, one could have included more detailed coverage of particular speciality areas, e.g. chapters on ethical issues surrounding adolescent care, child abuse, teenage mothers, behaviour modification programmes and so on. The approach we took, however, stressed the overall unity of paediatric nursing - where the specialities are wide enough to take in all paediatric nursing activities from neonatal care to adolescent health screening. I am certainly very aware that the book would not have been written and produced without the support, enthusiasm and co operation of the chapter-writers. The book is aimed at any of those people who work in the health professions: nurses, medical staff, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, soeial workers, teachers of various sorts and voluntary workers. It does not seek to provide information speeific to the work of those groups but aims at demysti fying counselling and making the skills involved available to them all. The book assumes that the professional working in a particular group will already have their own body of knowledge regarding their work. This book will supplement that knowledge and extend the range of caring skills. Throughout the book, practical examples of the prineiples under discussion are offered. These help to make the abstract concrete. They also serve to apply the skills described to a variety of health-care settings. A problem arises over gender and trying to avoid sexist language. I have been unable to find a solution to it and have referred to the counsellor as she and the dient as he. No sexism is intended but the usage may have made for darity and ease of reading. 216 pp. Englisch.

Armed with these principles, a student can then go to reviews and the original literature with a reasonable chance of understanding the jargon and the details. Molecular genetics is now so well advanced that it is easy to lose track of the purpose of a set of experiments in the wealth of sequence data and complex interactions. Neuware -The idea to write a book on ethical issues pertaining to paediatric nursing has been aired for quite some time. The single most signifi cant factor in holding up the creation of such a book was the lack of expertise in one person of all… the areas of paediatric nursing. The problem was resolved by producing an edited book, covering various specialities of paediatric nursing. Undoubtedly, one could have included more detailed coverage of particular speciality areas, e.g. chapters on ethical issues surrounding adolescent care, child abuse, teenage mothers, behaviour modification programmes and so on. The approach we took, however, stressed the overall unity of paediatric nursing - where the specialities are wide enough to take in all paediatric nursing activities from neonatal care to adolescent health screening. I am certainly very aware that the book would not have been written and produced without the support, enthusiasm and co operation of the chapter-writers.
