My first studies in the mid-1970s looked at the conflicts that emerge in dual career couples as the partners combine their various roles. Ideas for th…e early studies initially came from con versations with clients, friends, and people I met trav eling. Soon after the topic of dual careers came up, dis cussions of guilt and frustration followed. The partici pants in my first studies turned out to be predominantly women. Men expressed little interest in participating. A common response was, 'Talk to my wife. ' 7 8 PREFACE Ostensibly, husbands saw their partners, but not themselves, as dealing with conflicting roles. Although I presumed this to be somewhat true, I knew from ob serving my own husband that my having a career had an immeasurable impact on him. Were men denying something Were women overly sensitive Discussions with my husband, which helped me to get a better grasp on what male partners might be feeling, planted the seed for my subsequent book on men in dual-career 1 families, published in 1985. In gathering material for that book, I was struck by the contrast with men's ear lier disinterest. Husbands appeared eager to talk about their lives. Their greatest concern-what happens to the children -became the focus of my last set of studies. Why this book 'Sharing it all' symbolizes the es sence of a two-career marriage. 252 pp. Englisch.

From the point of…view of the microbiologist, it is obvious that microbial activity has a great part to play in the continuing maintenance of conditions suitable for other forms of life on this planet. There has therefore always been an awareness of the need for a good understanding of how microorganisms react in the environ ment, and this has been heightened from time to time as detrimental microbial activities become evident under certain conditions. The need for a good understanding has recently assumed a new importance as the era of microbial manipulation dawns-microbiology has always been a practical discipline, and the possibilities of beneficial modification on a global scale may be within our grasp. The growing interest in environmental microbiology can be gauged from the increase in relevant undergraduate teaching. However, one of the most serious problems confronting the student is the dearth of appropriate texts. In part this is a reflection of the plethora of potential subject matter. The study of the relationships of microorganisms with each other and with their environments-'microbial ecology' -constitutes a subject area which is far from precisely circumscribed, and each researcher or teacher has his own personal notion of which topics are appropriate. 224 pp. Englisch.

More than any other nursing speciality Accident and Emergency work reflects change in society because it is the casualties of social…upheaval, imbalance and inequality that you face every day. Here, unfortunately, A and E staff are confronted on a regular basis with child abuse, family violence, the result of terrorist activities, social violence, motor car accidents, personal loss of loved ones, the frustrations and aggression of life. Sometimes, though, some pleasant and funny episodes do occur but all too infrequently to become the norm. My own experience of A and E nursing is very limited; in fact, it goes back to the days of the Department being linked with Orthopaedics and being called 'Casualty' . It could, though, appear that in this day and age the wheel is tuming full circle and moves have been made in the last reorganization to link the two new distinct specialities again. This proposal was met with lots of protest from A and E staff which appears to have been defused. The arguments stemmed mainly from the fact that orthopaedics and A and E are two quite difficult specialities of care and skills and as such must be seen as autonomous. 200 pp. Englisch.

Due to a general inability to dif ferentiate between normal and neoplastic cells, little selectivity exists in curren…tly used oncolytic drugs. Consequently, significant toxicity to the patient is expected when systemic cancer chemotherapy is chosen as an appropriate therapeutic in tervention. Much of this toxicity, such as damage to the bone marrow, gastroin testinal tract, or hair follicles, is predictable based upon the fact that anticancer drugs kill actively dividing cells. These types of toxicities, while serious, are usually manageable and reversible and are, therefore, not often considered to be dose limiting. Unfortunately, several of the most important anticancer drugs also damage tissues in which the growth fraction is relatively small. Such toxicities can not be predicted based on the chemical structure of the drugs, are often not detected in preclinical studies, and are encountered frequently for the first time in clinical studies. Further, unlike most of the proliferative-dependent toxicities, the unpre dicted toxicities are usually irreversible or only partially reversible upon cessation of drug administration. Because of this, the unpredicted toxicities are referred to as dose limiting. They represent a significant barrier to the ultimate efficacy of several of our most important anticancer drugs. 270 pp. Englisch.

During this time a great deal of informa tion has been published about polysilicon. A wide range of deposition conditions has been used to form films exhibiting markedly different properties. Seemingly contradictory results can often be explained by considering the details of the structure formed. This monograph is an attempt to synthesize much of the available knowledge about polysilicon. It represents an effort to interrelate the deposition, properties, and applications of polysilicon so that it can be used most effectively to enhance device and integrated-circuit perfor mance. As device performance improves, however, some of the proper ties of polysilicon are beginning to restrict the overall performance of integrated circuits, and the basic limitations of the properties of polysili con also need to be better understood to minimize potential degradation of circuit behavior. 308 pp. Englisch.
