Sensors, being the most vital part of the electro…nic data processing and decision making machines, stand to gain the most from engineering of the properties of materials. Microfabrication technology has already contributed significantly to the batch fabrication of micro-sensors with higher over all qualities compared to their counterparts that are fabricated using other methods. Batch fabrication of micro-sensors i) results in more uniform properties of co-fabricated devices, ii) nearly eliminates the need for characterization of individual sensors, and iii) eliminates a need for laborious alignment procedures. A less obvious benefit of using microfabrication methods is the possibility of precise control over the dimensions of the sensor. This control enables engineering of some of the properties of the material which affect the sensor's operation. There are many examples of this in the literature. Optical sensors are known to have superior properties over their counterparts that use other (i. e. ; electrostatic and magnetic) means of detection. To name a few, these advantages are: i) immunity to electromagnetic interferences, ii) higher sensitivities compared to the other types of sensors, iii) simplicity of operation principles, and iv) simplicity of overall construction.

A minor revolution in optical fiber communications has occurred with the development of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. Solid-state laser development shifted into high-gear with the theoretical and experimental study of doubly-doped garnet lasers. Recent developments on semiconductor laser arrays are making diode pumped solid-state lasers commercially feasible. The purpose of this book is to detail these developments and to point out that many of the same underlying physical processes control advances in several diverse applications. For example, the basic science of energy transfer will be discussed by Zharikov et al. and Rotman for energy transfer and dopant-defect interactions, respectively; it will also be crucial in understanding cerium-doped scintilla tors, neodymium-chromium lasers, and up-conversion fiber lasers. As another example, phonon-induced non-radiative relaxation will appear in every chapter in this book.

The Meeting was organized with great efficiency in the delightful setting of…the Centro di Cultura Scientifica Ettore Mahorana, by its Director, Antonino Zichichi, and was directed by the Editors of the Proceedings and by Professor C. Alvisi of the University of Bologna. The emphasis was deliberately on the contributions of laboratory science to the understanding of mUltiple sclerosis, its etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment. Where so much is unknown, disagreement was expected and indeed welcome, and it is regrettable that it was not possible to publish verbatim the often animated and always interesting discussion. Differing views on the relevance of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis to multiple sclerosis were expressed by Dr. Wisniewski, Professor Seitelberger and Professor Alvord, who graphi cally illustrated his changing beliefs over the years. Professor Seitelberger laid much greater emphasis on remyelination in remission in mUltiple sclerosis than had previously been the accepted view. The disorder of both humoral and cellular immunity in multiple scler osis was discussed by Dr. Roos and Professor Link. Dr. Gilden described how recombinative techniques might be applied to the detec tion of a virus in multiple sclerosis. Calcium phosphates are the major inorganic constituents of biological hard tissues such as teeth and bones and other pathological minerals. Calcium… phosphates have been widely produced in industry, in such forms as, ceramics, nutrient supplements, medicines, dentifrices, and stabilizers for plastics. They are utilized in solid state chemistry as fluorescent lamp phosphors and play a role in waste water treatment processes. Calcium phosphates are important in industrial water treatment (Le. , boiler and cooling) where deposition of these salts on heat exchanger surfaces can lead to loss of system efficiency, overheating, unscheduled shutdown time, and ultimately heat exchanger failures. Effective control of calcium phosphate deposits continue to challenge the industrial scientist. Calcium phosphate deposits have also been encountered during pasteurization of milk. Calcium phosphates of interest include: dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD, CaHP0-2H0), brushite; dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCP, CaHP0), 4 2 4 monetite; octacalcium phosphate (OCP, CasH2(P04)6-SH20); tricalcium phosphate (TCP, Ca3(P04h), whitlockite; and hydroxyapatite (HAP, Cas(P04h0H).
