Examples of sequential patterns include but are not limited to protein sequence motifs and web page navigation traces. In this book, we focus on sequential pattern mining. To meet different needs of various applications, several models of sequential patterns have been proposed. We do not only study the mathematical definitions and application domains of these models, but also the algorithms on how to effectively and efficiently find these patterns. The objective of this book is to provide computer scientists and domain - perts such as life scientists with a set of tools in analyzing and understanding the nature of various sequences by : (1) identifying the specific model(s) of - quential patterns that are most suitable, and (2) providing an efficient algorithm for mining these patterns. Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Data Mining is the process of extracting implicit knowledge and discovery of interesting characteristics and patterns that are not explicitly represented in the databases. The techniques can play an important role in understanding data and in capturing intrinsic relationships among data instances. Data mining has been an active research area in the past decade and has been proved to be very useful.

The first seven chapters introduce the reader step-by-step to the central issues concerning a quadratic program or an affine variational inequality, such as the solution existence, necessary and sufficient conditions for a point to belong to the solution set, and properties of the solution set. The subsequent two chapters discuss briefly two concrete nlodels (linear fractional vector optimization and the traffic equilibrium problem) whose analysis can benefit a lot from using the results on quadratic programs and affine variational inequalities. There are six chapters devoted to the study of conti- ity and/or differentiability properties of the characteristic maps and functions in quadratic programs and in affine variational inequa- ties where all the components of the problem data are subject to perturbation. Quadratic programs and affine variational inequa- ties under linear perturbations are studied in three other chapters. One special feature of the presentation is that when a certain pr- erty of a characteristic map or function is investigated, we always try first to establish necessary conditions for it to hold, then we go on to study whether the obtained necessary conditions are suf- cient ones. Written by staff and close associates of the Institute, its chapters were produced under close scrutiny and with the expedition of a command economy. To our delight, the book has seen a success which went beyond the dreams of its editors: it has been adopted by other courses similar to our own and is widely referred to. The same was never likely to be true of The Study of Dyslexia, which was envisaged as a theoretical companion volume written by authors and researchers of international repute. Nearly five years after the idea first took shape, this second volume now arrives to complete the enterprise, but it has been a very different project. 308 pp. Englisch.

INTRODUCTION Formerly nomadic livestock-keeping pastoralists have settled in many regions of t…he world in the past century. Some groups, including those in the former Soviet Union, Iran, and Israel, have settled in response to state-enforced measures; others including Saami in Norway or Bedouins in Saudi Arabia, in response to changing economic opportunities. East Africa, home to many cattle- and camel-keeping pastoral societies, has been among the most recent to change. The shift to sedentism by East African pastoralists increased d- matically in the late 20th century as a result of sharp economic, political, demographic, and environmental changes. Prolonged drought, population growth, increased reliance on ag- culture, and political insecurities including civil war and ethnic conflict have all affected the ability of pastoralists to keep their herds. Still, the majority of pastoralist households in Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Tanzania remain committed to raising livestock, even as they adapt to farming or urban residence. Pastoral production remains a major economic focus in the savannas and scrub deserts of Africa, due to both its ecological adaptability and the economic incentive to market livestock and their products (Fratkin, 2001). Since then, the century changed, the hinge of history creaked and Plenum was taken over by Kluwer Academic Publishers, but the first of the pair, Dyslexia in Practice, emerged quickly and on schedule (Townend and Turner, 2000). Written by staff and close associates of the Institute, its chapters were produced under close scrutiny and with the expedition of a command economy. To our delight, the book has seen a success which went beyond the dreams of its editors: it has been adopted by other courses similar to our own and is widely referred to. The same was never likely to be true of The Study of Dyslexia, which was envisaged as a theoretical companion volume written by authors and researchers of international repute. PTH, together with vitamin D, responds to hypocalcemia to increase extracellu M lar calcium levels, by acting on bone, kidn…ey and intestine. The recent intro duction of PTH as a major therapeutic agent in osteoporosis has directed renewed interest in this important hormone and in the physiology of the parathyroid gland. The parathyroid is unique in that low serum calcium stimulates PTH secretion. As hypocalcemia persists, there is also an increase in PTH synthesis. Chronic hypocalcemia leads to hypertrophy and hyper plasia of the parathyroid gland together with increased production of the hormone. Phosphate is also a key modulator of PTH secretion, gene expres sion and parathyroid cell proliferation. Understanding the biology of the parathyroid as well as the mecha nisms of associated diseases has taken great strides in recent years. This book summarizes the molecular mechanisms involved in the function of the para thyroid gland. The first chapter reviews the development of the parathyroid gland and the genes involved in this process as identified using genetically manipulated mice.
