However, even during the meeting important con tributions were added. The meeting was hosted by the Microbiologi cal Dept. of F.A.L., which also took care of the organizatory as pects. Nitrate is constantly lost from both terrestial and aquatic ecosystems, causing rnixed feelings between ecologists and agricul turists. While bacteriologically very rnuch is known, the ecology of the processes is still poorly understood, nor can it be evaluated what it rneans as an econornic loss for farrners and world food produc tion. Therefore this NATO Advanced Workshop was established to per mit a lirnited nurnber of scientists active in this field to corne to gether for a short while to address the following objectives: 1) To exchange ideas between scientists (bacteriologists and ecologists) and agronornists. 2) To assess the state of the art. 3) To discuss the difficulties of experimentation in the field. 4) To define future research. Although these books are major resources for the investigator and the clinician in the field, it is often difficult for students, both undergraduate and graduate, to learn the basics of health psychology from such books. Thus, Health Psychology: A Psychobiological Perspective was written to provide such basics. The need for such a textbook in health psychology became appar ent to the first author when he was searching for reading material for an undergraduate course in health psychology at McGill University. The existence of the infrared region of the spectrum has been known for almost two hundred years but the development of detectors specifically for these wavelengths was limited for a long time due to technology limitations and difficulties in understanding and explaining the phenomena involved. Significant advances were made during World War II, when the potential military applications of being able 'to see in the dar~' were demonstrated, and this progress has been maintained during the last forty years when many major advances have been achieved, such that the use of photodetectors for both civil and military applications is now relatively common and can be inexpensive. 192 pp. Englisch.

In contrast, the treatment of cancer metastases, the cause of… most cancer deaths, has not been very successful. Approximately 50% or more of patients with primary malignant neoplasms already have established metastases. Consequently, the most important problem in cancer treatment is the destruction or prevention of metastases. Metastases research has obvious clinical importance. Yet it has only been recently that investigators have attempted to study the mechanisms in volved in this process. This is in part due to the complexity of metastases formation. A metastatic colony is the result of a complicated series of steps involving mUltiple tumor host interactions. It is expected that multiple biochemical factors and gene products derived both from the host and the tumor cell may be required for the metastasizing tumor cell to invade, survive host defenses, travel in the circulation, arrest and adhere in the target organ, invade out, and grow as a metastatic colony. Some of these factors have recently been identified by investigators who have focused on individual steps in the metastatic process and have employed new technologies in immunology, biochemistry and molecular biology. Others are important as agents of food spoilage. In recent years, these moulds have ga1ned attention because a number of species produce toxic metabo lites. The great impact of mycotoxicology on food problems, particularly in developing countries has generated a vast body of research. The ecological roles of Aspergillus and Penicil lium species in nature is also of importance. For the past several decades, the taxonomic treatments of Raper and Thorn (1949) and Raper and Fennell (1965) ~lere the only standard descciptive monographs of Penicillium and Asper gillus. However, in practice, the identification of these economically important moulds was problematic and caused con siderable confusion in the literature and subsequently in applied research. In the past ten years, several laboratories have carried out taxonomic research resulting in a number of valuable publications. However, the differences in methodo logy and species concepts made comparison between the diffe rent classifications difficult.
