Its principal objective has been to innitiate and nurture collaborative research networks of scientists interested in the IDultidisciplinary aspects of many-body theory applied to problems in con densed-matter physics. Financial as well as moral support is gratefully appreciated by all: of the CLAF in Rio, the CNPq in Brasilia, the FAPESP and the FUNDUNESP in Sao Paulo, and the U.S. Army Research Office in Durham, NC, USA.

How do we decide that such a number is actually a special value of a familiar function without the tools Gauss had at his disposal, which were, presumably, phenomenal insight and a prodigious memory Part of the answer, we hope, lies in this volume. This book is structured like a reverse telephone book, or more accurately, like a reverse handbook of special function values. It is a list of just over 100,000 eight-digit real numbers in the interval [0,1) that arise as the first eight digits of special values of familiar functions. It is designed for people, like ourselves, who encounter various numbers computationally and want to know if these numbers have some simple form. This is not a particularly well-defined endeavor-every eight-digit number is rational and this is not interesting. However, the chances of an eight digit number agreeing with a small rational, say with numerator and denominator less than twenty-five, is small. Thus the list is comprised primarily of special function evaluations at various algebraic and simple transcendental values. The exact numbers included are described below. The papers of this volume are dedicated by friends, students, and admirers to the memory of this outstanding scholar and teacher. To mention but one side…of his original and varied scientific work, the results and effects of which cannot be dis cussed here, Edmund Landau performed one of his greatest services in developing the analytic theory of prime numbers from a subject accessible only with great difficulty even to the initiated few to the general estate of mathematicians. With the exception of the work of Chebyshev, Riemann, and Mertens, before Landau the problems of this theory were attempted only in a number of papers which were filled with gaps and errors. These problems were such that even Gauss abandoned them after several attempts in his youth, and they were described by N. H. Abel in a letter of 1823 and by O. Toeplitz in a lecture in 1930 as the deepest part of mathe matics. Clarification first began with the papers of Hadamard, de la Vallee Poussin, and von Mangoldt. At the end ofthe foreword to his work' Handbuch der Lehre von der Verteilung der Primzahlen' which appeared in 1909, Landau could thus remark with complete justification: ' . . . Our justification is based upon our effort to concentrate the symposium upon a single area in which he has had an extended involvement: namely, the metamorphic molt in flies. In so doing, we immediately recognized the enormous humoral and physiological ramifications, both direct and indirect, of such an interest. Our selection of these papers is an attempt to present the broad picture with a few quick strokes. The first offering, by J. H. Willis, et al., is a direct outgrowth of Fraenkel's work with Rudall on the chemistry of the puparium. Their investigations on the structure of fly cuticle and its changes at pupariation (Fraenkel and Rudall, 1940, Proc. Roy. Soc. London (~) 129:1; 1947, ibid, 134:111), provided quanti tative data which have,since that time, influenced our ideas con cerning cuticular changes at metamorphosis and are presently at the center of the controversy over the mechanism of cuticular hardening and darkening (see Hillerton and Vincent, 1979, l. It is probable that a variety of psychoanalysts adopting a listening posture with a given patient would hear and understand a mul tiplicity of different meanings. Over the years, sensitive, well trained psychoanalytic investigators have formulated concepts con cerning mental functioning from disparate and often opposing points of view. These contradictory ideas are offered from a ba sic theoretical foundation placing unconscious mental events as the most important force shaping human experience. Divergent opin ions may at times appear irreconcilable and then serve as the grounds for developing a separate psychoanalytic school of thought. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In 1970, under the sponsorship of Oak Ridge Associated Univer sities (ORAU), a group of clinical investigators formed the Cooper ative Group to Study Localization of Radiopharmaceuticals. The first radiopharmaceutical selected for s…tudy was 67-Gallium (67-Ga) administered as the citrate. The object of the study was to de termine the usefulness of 67-Ga in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with various malignancies. Funding for the project was granted by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission and the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Nuclear Medicine Department of the Clinical Center, NIH, agreed to assist ORAU with aspects of this study, particularly with 67-Ga scin tigraphy of patients with lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease. Pre liminary reports from the ORAU study are in press. Since April 1971, 67-Ga scintigraphy has gained increasing use in the study of cancer patients at the Clinical Center, NIH, where well over 1000 such patients have been examined by this method. This monograph was written to present selected examples from this group of a variety of malignancies seen in this 28-month period. No attempt has been made to correlate this overall experience statistically. Rather, this presentation is to help familiarize the practitioner of Nuclear Medicine with the wide range of usefulness for 67-Ga scintigraphy while making him aware of the variation in scan appearance and watchful of the many pitfalls of 67-Ga scan interpretation. The meeting was held…under the auspices of the Ecosciences Panel of the N.A.T.O. Science Committee, and the organising expenses and greater part of the expenses of the speakers and chairmen were provided by N.A.T.O. The scientific programme was planned by M. W. Holdgate and M. J. Woodman, in consultation with numerous colleagues, and especially with the Administrative Director of the Conference in Iceland, Dr. Sturla Fridriksson. Iceland proved a particularly suitable location for such a Conference. Geologically, it is one of the youngest countries 1n the world, owing its origin to the up-welling of volcanic rock along the spreading zone of the mid-Atlantic ridge within the past 20 million years. Its structure, northern oceanic situation, recent glaciation and continuing volcanic activity make it distinct as a habitat and have given it a flora and fauna of especial interest. It is also a land of great natural beauty with its ice caps, waterfalls, volcanic landforms, geothermal features and dramatic coasts. However, the endothelium, which for a long time was considered to be just an inert barrier lining, had been barely explored until three decades ago. Since then, there has been an upsurge of interest in the fine structure and function of endothelial cells. Intense in vivo and in vitro investigations have revealed that the endothelial cell is a key element in a wide variety of normal activities and diseases. A large number of investigators and laboratories have been attracted to endothelial cell research, thus supporting the expansion of the continuously grow ing and diversifying field of endotheliology. Rather than offer a comprehensive treatment of the entire field, thereby…duplicating earlier texts as well as some ongoing bookwriting efforts, we decided to narrow down our aim to step growth polymerization systems. This not only provides us the lUxury of a more elaborate presentation within the constraints of production costs, but also enables us to remain on somewhat familiar terrain. The style and format we have selected are those of a textbook. The first six chapters present the principles of step growth polymerization. These are quite general, and can easily be applied in such diverse and emerging fields as polymerization applications in photolithography and microelec tronics. A detailed discussion of several important step growth polymeriz ations follows in the next five chapters. One could cover the first six chapters of this book in about six to eight weeks of a three-credit graduate course on polymerization reactors, with the other chapters assigned for reading. This could be followed by a discussion of chain-growth and other polymeriz ations, with which our material blends well. One of the major aims of the series is to foster the exchange of ideas and techniques among physicists working in such diverse areas of application of many-body theories as nucleon-nucleon interactions, nuclear physics, astronomy, atomic and molecular physics, quantum chemistry, quantum fluids and plasmas, and solid-state and condensed matter physics. A special feature of the present meeting however was that particular attention was paid in the programme to such topics of current interest in solid-state physics as high-temperature superconductors, heavy fermions, the quantum Hall effect, and disorder. A panel discussion was also organised during the conference, under the chair manship of N. W. The impetus for the develop ment of these techniques has been the desire to obtain quantitative data on the… rates of 'fast' electrochemical processes, including those coupled to homogeneous chemical reactions in solution. This has necessarily meant the development of techniques that are capable of delineating the effects of mass transport and charge transfer at very short times. The purpose of this book is to describe how the various transient techniques may be used to obtain the desired information. Emphasis is placed upon the detailed mathematical development of the subject, since this aspect is the most frequently ignored in other texts in this field. In any relaxation or transient technique for the study of rate processes, it is necessary to disturb the reaction from equilibrium or the steady state by applying a perturbing impulse to the system. The system is then allowed to relax to a new equilibrium or steady-state position, and. the transient (i. e. , the response as a function of time) is analyzed to extract the desired kinetic information. In electrochemical studies the heterogeneous rate constants are, in general, dependent upon the potential difference across the interface, so that the perturbing impulse frequently takes the form of a known variation in potential as a function of time. 344 pp. Englisch.

Yet it is urgent that 'molecular' and 'cellular' people cooperate more if immunology is to continue the exportation of new concepts to other disciplines. In fact, the deep meaning of molecule-molecule and cell-cell interaction, the generation of signals and their effective transmission which results in elicitation, control or suppression of responses cannot be unraveled without the experts on antibody structure or complement activation sharing their views with the experts on T cell, B cell and macrophage membrane receptors as well as the experts on factors that carry the information released by these cells. Whether the meeting was scientifically fruitful, the reader can judge after having digested these pages. The Subject This book takes as its subject, ion-molecule and ion-atom reactions occurring at high energies. It emphasizes the study of inelastic reactions at high energy through measurements of translational energy. The investiga tion of these reactions using other procedures has been important in the cases of the simpler systems. In particular, the emitted radiation has been investigated and this subject is therefore discussed where appropriate. For more complex species, however, there is little information available other than from energy spectra. The defining characteristic of the energy range of interest is that momentum transfer to the neutral target is negligible for small scattering angles. After long negotiation and fund raising, with the assistance and moral support of Dr. Abel Lajtha, director ofthe Center ofNeurochem istry in New York, USA, we finally successfully put the program together. The Sun Yat-sen Foundation in China supported all the local expenses of the symposium and Sun Yat-sen University of Medicine in Guangzhou, China served as host organization. The symposium was held in Guangzhou, China, November 9-11,1992, the eve of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's birthday. Dr. Sun Yat-sen was born in Cui Heng Cun, on the outskirts of Guangzhou, China on November 12, 1866. He finished his high school education in the British and American Christian school in Honolulu, where he was exposed to Western influence. It was a happy coincidence that the three of us, child psychiatrists with predominantly clinical interests, selected a collaborative bench research project involving neurotransmitter receptor characterization and regulation. We appreciated the relevance of our work to child psychiatry and wished for a forum to share the excitement we enjoyed in the laboratory with our clinical colleagues. Moreover, it seemed to us that much of the pharmacological research in child psychiatry proceeded on an empirical basis, often without a compelling neurochemical rationale. This could reflect the paucity of neurochemical data that exists in child psychiatry and the very limited understanding of the pathophysiology in most psychiatric disorders that occur in childhood. Also, we bemoaned the fact that there was a virtual absence of meaningful interchange between clinical investigators in child psychiatry and their colleagues in the neurosciences. We believed that an edited book appealing to clinicians and basic scientists could serve as an initial effort to foster interchange between them. An exposition is given of ordinary, generalized, two- and three-stage estimates for regression analysis, the method of principal components being… applied for factor analysis. When establishing an econometric model, the two ways of analysis complement each other. The model was realized as part of the 'Interplay' research project concerning the economies of the European Common Market countries at the Econometrics Department of the Tilburg School of Economics. The Interplay project aims at: a. elaborating more or less uniformly defined and estimated models; b. clarifying the economic structure and the economic policy possible with the linked models of the European Community countries. Besides the model for the Netherlands published here, the models for Belgium, Italy, West Germany and the United Kingdom are ready for linking and for publishing later on. The econometric model presented in this book and upon which the Interplay model is based comprises eleven structural and twenty-one definitional equations; it is estimated with ordinary, two- and three-stage least squares. The analysis of the model is directed at eliminating multicollinearity, accor ding to D.E. Farrar's and R. Glauber's method. In practice, however, complete elimination of multicollinearity leads to an exclusion of certain relations which is not entirely satisfactory. Economic relations can be dealt with more fully by analyzing the variables involved in detail by factor analysis. Among the phenomena discussed were superconductivity, magnetic ordering, the metal-insulator transition, localization, the fractional Quantum Hall effect (QHE), Peierls and spin-Peierls transitions, conductance fluctuations and sliding charge-density (CDW) and spin-density (SDW) waves. That these effects appear most pronounced in systems of reduced dimensionality was amply demonstrated at the meeting. Indeed, when concrete illustrations were presented, they typically involved chain-like materials such as conjugated polymers, inorganic CDW systems and organie conductors, or layered materials such as high-temperature copper-oxide superconductors, certain of the organic superconductors, and the QHE samples, or devices where the electrons are confined to a restricted region of sample, e. g. , the depletion layer of a MOSFET. To enable this broad subject to be covered in thirty-five lectures (and ab out half as many posters), the workshop was deliberately focused on theoretical models for these phenomena and on methods for describing as faithfully as possible the 'true' behav ior of these models. This latter emphasis was especially important, since the inherently many-body nature of problems involving interacting electrons renders conventional effec tive single-particle/mean-field methods (e. g. , Hartree-Fock or the local-density approxi mation in density-functional theory) highly suspect.
