For example, it is recognized that marijuana is currently widely used as a recreational drug in the United States as well as other… countries. Similarly, abuse of cocaine, especially crack cocaine, is considered to be an epidemic. 'The war on drugs' by the US Government was directly aimed at the illicit use of cocaine, marijuana, and opiates as well as other drugs of abuse. Furthermore, alcohol is also considered a major problem of abuse in this country as well as in many other countries. It is estimated there are at least 10 million alcoholics in the United States alone. A signi cant portion of those hospitalized with infectious diseases are alcoholics. Similarly, there have been many reports of association between marijuana use and increased susceptibility to infection as well as a re- tion between use of opiates and infections. The relationship between drug abuse and increased incidence of various infections has stimulated increased investi- tion of whether and how such drugs affect immune function, especially imp- tant for resistance against infectious agents. During the last decades, a wide variety of studies have shown that drugs of abuse, including marijuana, cocaine, or opiates, as well as alcohol, alter both neurophysiological as well as pathological responses of individuals.

This text provides the reader with background information on hydrology and water quality issues that are necessary to understand many of the environmental problems associated with land development and growth. The variability of runoff' flows and pollutant concentrations, however, makes the performance of simple technologies erratic and predicting and modeling their performance difficult. Chapters on statistics and modeling are included to provide the proper background and tools. The latter chapters of the text cover many of the different technologies that can be employed to address runoff flows and improve water quality. These chapters take a design approach with specific examples provided for many of the management practices. A number of methods are currently available for addressing the problems associated with stormwater runoff quality from urban areas; more continue to be developed as research is advanced and interest in this subject continues to surge. Traditionally, techniques for the improvement of runoff quality were borrowed applications from water and wastewater treatment, such as large sedimentation ponds Recently, increased interest has been placed on using natural systems to improve water quality.

The way of building switching fabrics from elements of smaller capacity and different characteristics of switching fabrics topologies has been for a long time a rich area of theoretical research. The seminal work is due to C. Clos [23], who first considered multistage strict-sense nonblocking switching networks, and V. E. Benes [9], who first introduced the mathemati cal theory of switching networks. From that time, many research was conducted in this field. Switching fabrics found its application not only in telecommunication, starting from telephone exchanges through ATM switches and IP routers to optical cross-connect systems and optical packet switches, but also in other areas of knowledge like computation and control. Theory of switching fabrics becomes also a part of applied mathematics. Results of studies carried out by researchers from these area were published in numerous papers and some books. In a waveleng- routed network, an optical channel, referred to as a lightpath, is set up between two network nodes for communication. Using WDM technology, an optical fiber link can support multiple non-overlapping wavelength channels, each of which can be operated at the data rate of 10 Gbps or 40 Gbps today. On the other hand, only a fraction of customers are expected to have a need for such a high bandwidth. Due to the large cost of the optical backbone infrastruc ture and enormous WDM channel capacity, connection requests with diverse low-speed bandwidth requirements need to be efficiently groomed onto hi- capacity wavelength channels. This book investigates the optimized design, provisioning, and performance analysis of traffic-groomable WDM networks, and proposes and evaluates new WDM network architectures. Organization of the Book Significant amount of research effort has been devoted to traffic grooming in SONET/WDM ring networks since the current telecom networks are mainly deployed in the form of ring topologies or interconnected rings. As a result, the provenance of light reaching the eye at any moment is uncertain. This quandary is referred to as the inverse optics problem. In fact developments in CN have benefited from contributions of multiple areas, namely computer science, computer engineering, communications and networking, management, economy, social sciences, law and ethics, etc. Furthermore, some theories and paradigms defined elsewhere have been suggested by several research groups as promising tools to help define and characterize emerging collaborative organizational forms. Although still at the beginning of a long way to go, there is a growing awareness in the research and academic world, for the need to establish a stronger theoretical foundation for this new discipline and a number of recent works are contributing to this goal.From a utilitarian perspective, agility has been pointed out as one of the most appealing characteristics of collaborative networks to face the challenges of a fast changing socio-economic context. However, during the last years it became more evident that finding the right partners and establishing the necessary preconditions for starting an effective collaboration process are both costly and time consuming activities, and therefore an inhibitor of the aimed agility. Among others, obstacles include lack of information (e.g. non-availability of catalogs with normalized profiles of organizations) and lack of preparedness of organizations to join the collaborative process. Overcoming the mismatches resulting from the heterogeneity of potential partners (e.g. differences in infrastructures, corporate culture, methods of work, and business practices) requires considerable investment. Building trust, a pre-requisite for any effective collaboration, is not straight forwardand requires time. Therefore the effective creation of truly dynamic collaborative networks requires a proper context in which potential members are prepared to rapidly get engaged in collaborative processes. The concept of breeding environment has thus emerged as an important facilitator for wider dissemination of collaborative networks and their practical materialization. The PRO-VE'05 held in Valencia, Spain, continues the 6th event in a series of successful working conferences on virtual enterprises.
