Neuware - The aim of IFIP Working Group 2.7 (13.4) for User Interface Engineering is to investigate the nature, concepts and construction of user interfaces for software systems. The group's scope is: - developing user interfaces based on knowledge of system and user behaviour; - developing frameworks for r…easoning about interactive systems; and - developing engineering models for user interfaces. Every three years, the group holds a 'working conference' on these issues. The conference mixes elements of a regular conference and a workshop. As in a regular conference, the papers describe relatively mature work and are thoroughly reviewed. As in a workshop, the audience is kept small, to enable in-depth discussions. The conference is held over 5-days (instead of the usual 3-days) to allow such discussions. Each paper is discussed after it is presented. A transcript of the discussion is found at the end of each paper in these proceedings, giving important insights about the paper. Each session was assigned a 'notes taker', whose responsibility was to collect/transcribe the questions and answers during the session. After the conference, the original transcripts were distributed (via the Web) to the attendees and modifications that clarified the discussions were accepted.

Miniaturization allows the integration of a larger number of transistors with enhanced switching speed. Novel… transistor structures and passivation materials diminish circuit delay by minimizing parasitic electrical capacitance. These advances, however, pose several challenges for the thermal engineering of integrated circuits. The low thermal conductivities of passivation layers result in large temperature rises and temperature gradient magni tudes, which degrade electrical characteristics of transistors and reduce lifetimes of interconnects. As dimensions of transistors and interconnects decrease, the result ing changes in current density and thermal capacitance make these elements more susceptible to failure during brief electrical overstress. This work develops a set of high-resolution measurement techniques which de termine temperature fields in transistors and interconnects, as well as the thermal properties of their constituent films. At the heart of these techniques is the thermore flectance thermometry method, which is based on the temperature dependence of the reflectance of metals. Spatial resolution near 300 nm and temporal resolution near IOns are demonstrated by capturing transient temperature distributions in intercon nects and silicon-on-insulator (SOl) high-voltage transistors. Analyses of transient temperature data obtained from interconnect structures yield thermal conductivities and volumetric heat capacities of thin films. 132 pp. Englisch.

Even today, there are no general modeling tools that accompany the whole modeling process from start to finish, that is to say, from model creation to report writing. This book proposes a framework for computer-based modeling. More precisely, it puts forward a modeling language as a kernel representation for mathematical models. It presents a general specification for modeling tools. The book does not expose any solution methods or algorithms which may be useful in solving models, neither is it a treatise on how to build them. No help is intended here for the modeler by giving practical modeling exercises, although several models will be presented in order to illustrate the framework. One key to efficient simulation using RQMC is to structure problems to reveal a small set of important variables,… their number being the effective dimension, while the other variables collectively are relatively insignificant. Another is smoothing. The book provides many illustrations of both keys, in particular for problems involving Poisson processes or Gaussian processes. RQMC beats grids by a huge margin. With low effective dimension, RQMC is an order-of-magnitude more efficient than standard Monte Carlo. With, in addition, certain smoothness - perhaps induced - RQMC is an order-of-magnitude more efficient than deterministic QMC. Unlike the latter, RQMC permits error estimation via the central limit theorem. For random-dimensional problems, such as occur with discrete-event simulation, RQMC gets judiciously combined with standard Monte Carlo to keep memory requirements bounded. This monograph has been designed to appeal to a diverse audience, including those with applications in queueing, operations research, computational finance, mathematical programming, partial differential equations (both deterministic and stochastic), and particle transport, as well as to probabilists and statisticians wanting to know how to apply effectively a powerful tool, and to those interested in numerical integration or optimization in their own right. It recognizes that the heart of practical application is algorithms, so pseudocodes appear throughout the book. This book has two major objectives. First, it intends to provide an introduction to magnetism of metals in a broad sense. Besides pursuing the mechanism of metallic magnetism itself, it attempts to fmd and actively analyze magnetic causes hidden hitherto unnoticed behind various physical phenomena. My foremost goal is to expose the fundamental role played by phonons in the mechanism of metallic magnetism. I demonstrate how such a view also helps to elucidate a broad spectrum of other observations. The second objective is to concisely introduce the standard many-body points of view and techniques necessary in studying solid physics in general. The book is intended to be self-contained and starts with Chapter I containing a brief summary on the rudiments of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics including the method of second quantization. In the same spirit, the foundation of magnetism in general is summarized in Chapter 2 and that for metals in particular, the Stoner theory, in Chapter 3.
