Unfor tunately, these reviews and supplements appear sporadically, and the reader can never be sure when a topic of special interest will be covered. Cancer Treatment and Research is a series of authoritative volumes that aim to meet this need. It is an attempt to establish a critical mass of oncology literature covering virtually all oncology topics, revised frequently to keep the coverage up to date, easily available on a single library shelf or by a single personal subscription. We have approached the problem in the following fashion: first, by dividing the oncology literature into specific subdivisions such as lung can cer, genitourinary cancer, and pediatric oncology; second, by asking emi nent authorities in each of these areas to edit a volume on the specific topic on an annual or biannual basis. Each topic and tumor type is covered in a volume appearing frequently and predictably, discussing current diagnosis, staging, markers, all forms of treatment modalities, basic biology, and more.

Valuable contributions, towards this end, have been made by scientists from different dis ciplines including biochemistry, physiology, pathology, molecular b…iology and biophysics. We felt that it would be of interest and value to bring together ex perts from diverse specialities to present their work and to discuss the common problems encountered in their endeavours. In accordance, a symposium was organised in February 1988 at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh. It was held during the annual meeting of the Indian section of the International Society for Heart Research. This book is a compila tion of some of the papers presented at the symposium. The symposium was sponsored by the Council on Cardiac Metabolism of the International Society and Federation of Cardiology. A number of Indian or ganisations gave generous financial help. These included the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Indian Council of Medical Research, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and Department of Science and Technology. Desktop publishing was used to prepare this volume. In doing so we came to appreciate the remarkable qualities, skills and help rendered by Professor Dharam Vir. While the numerous anthologies of articles have the merit of not presenting students with a single biased approach, they usually have the disadvantage of pre senting articles that are narrowly focused criticisms of other narrowly focused articles. On the other hand, texts by single authors tend to be overly theoretical in their approach. The philosopher teaching ethics in a medical school or in a hospital set ting must tread a difficult intellectual path. There are no 'desert island' issues in clinical ethics, and few of the actual cases can be simply stripped down to clear con flicts between two philosophical theories. The horns of vii viii Preface the dilemmas that he encounters are more likely to re semble a stag's horns than a bull's. A philosopher work ing in these settings must quickly change his accus tomed approach to philosophical issues if he is to be effective. The 'brain' of the personal computer is the microprocessor (together with RAM and ROM) which makes the decisions needed for the co…mputer to perform in the desired manner. The microprocessor continues to evolve as increasingly complex tasks are required. While not sharing the limelight of the microprocessor, the 'heart' of the personal computer, namely the power supply, is equally important since without the necessary source of power the microprocessor would be a useless piece of silicon. The power supply of twenty years ago was much different than its modem day equivalent. At the dawn of the personal computer era in the late 1970s, de power was obtained from a simple diode bridge. However, the need for smooth, regulated DC at low voltage required at the same time both a bulky input transformer and a large dc side ftlter. Those computer fans present at the birth of this industry can remember the large boxes housing our Altair, Cromemco and Northstar computers which was made necessary largely because of the huge power supply. It is not well appreciated but certainly true that the huge sucess of the Apple II computer in those days was due, at least in part, to the relatively slim proftle of the machine. This sleek appearance was largely due to the adoption of the then new and unproven switched mode power supply. 192 pp. Englisch.

It was the intent of the organizers to draw together lead…ing international researchers to address, in a comprehensive fashion, the persisting problem of depression in schizophrenic individuals. As many of the authors point out, depression was clearly identified as a central problem in schizophrenia by the pioneers of psychiatry. Their wisdom and clinical acumen was lost for a time to be only recently re discovered. Their insights must now be integrated with modern taxonomic systems, evolving etiological models and methods of assessment. With increased recognition of the problem of depression in this population we must also examine appropriate methods of ameliorating the suffering of those afflicted. The conference was divided into sections (theoretical aspects, phenomenology, suicide and treatment) and the chairmen of these sections have given brief introductions. Necessary overlap of topics and methods provided a convergent and validating examination of empirical results which may serve to direct continuing studies. The presentations were chosen to encompass the entire range of… topics currently under study in this exciting new discipline. Stringent acceptance requirements were placed on contributions: (1) each description was required to include detailed characterization of a working chip, and (2) each design was not to have been published previously. In several cases, the status of the project was not known until a few weeks before the meeting date. As a result, some of the most recent innovative work in the field was presented. Because this discipline is evolving rapidly, each project is very much a work in progress. Authors were asked to devote considerable attention to the shortcomings of their designs, as well as to the notable successes they achieved. In this way, other workers can now avoid stumbling into the same traps, and evolution can proceed more rapidly (and less painfully). The chapters in this volume are presented in the same order as the corresponding presentations at the workshop. The first two chapters are concerned with fmding solutions to complex optimization problems under a predefmed set of constraints. The first chapter reports what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first neural-chip design. Our sense that a handbook was needed sprang not from a deluge of highly erudite studies…calling out for organization, nor did it stem from a belief that the field had become so fully articulated that such a book was necessary to provide summation and reference. Instead, this handbook was conceptualized as an attempt to provide structure and organization for a field of study that, from our perspective, had come to be a large-scale example of a 'degenerating' research program (see Brown, Chapter 1). The handbook grew out of a series of discussions that spanned several years. At the heart of most of our interactions was a profound unhappiness with the state of research on creativity. Our consensus was that the number of 'good' works published on creativity each year was small and growing smaller. Further, we could not point to a journal, text, or professional organization that was providing leadership for the field in shaping a scientifically sound framework for the development of research programs in creativity. At the same time, we were casting about for a means of honoring a dear friend, E. Paul Torrance. Our decision was that we might best be able to honor Paul and influence research on creativity by developing a handbook designed to challenge traditional perspectives while offering research agendas based on contemporary psychological views. 472 pp. Englisch.

It was the intent of the organizers to draw together…leading international researchers to address, in a comprehensive fashion, the persisting problem of depression in schizophrenic individuals. As many of the authors point out, depression was clearly identified as a central problem in schizophrenia by the pioneers of psychiatry. Their wisdom and clinical acumen was lost for a time to be only recently re discovered. Their insights must now be integrated with modern taxonomic systems, evolving etiological models and methods of assessment. With increased recognition of the problem of depression in this population we must also examine appropriate methods of ameliorating the suffering of those afflicted. The conference was divided into sections (theoretical aspects, phenomenology, suicide and treatment) and the chairmen of these sections have given brief introductions. Necessary overlap of topics and methods provided a convergent and validating examination of empirical results which may serve to direct continuing studies. As well we hope that thoughtful review may directly influence clinical practice and thereby improve the quality of life for schizophrenic patients. 276 pp. Englisch.

Sodal psycholo gists have recently begun to leave the fireside coziness of scribbling textbook catalogues of our field and to venture out into the cold, outdoor adventure of detecting (or creating ) its underlying structure. Of these attempts at providing scope plus order, Kruglanski's must surely be the most ambitious. For his is no mere overarching theory, which, like a circus tent over a diverse set of sideshows, covers everything but does little to provide thematic structure. Rather, Kruglanski tries to produce a basic reorganization of our thinking about sodal psychology. This volume provides an over view of one category of such tools: mathematical models of human performance. It represents a collection of invited papers from a 1988 NATO Workshop. Neuware -The motivation underlying our development of a 'handbook' of creativity was different from what usually is described by editors of other such volumes. Our sense that a handbook was needed sprang not from a deluge of highly erudite studies call…ing out for organization, nor did it stem from a belief that the field had become so fully articulated that such a book was necessary to provide summation and reference. Instead, this handbook was conceptualized as an attempt to provide structure and organization for a field of study that, from our perspective, had come to be a large-scale example of a 'degenerating' research program (see Brown, Chapter 1). The handbook grew out of a series of discussions that spanned several years. At the heart of most of our interactions was a profound unhappiness with the state of research on creativity. Our consensus was that the number of 'good' works published on creativity each year was small and growing smaller. Further, we could not point to a journal, text, or professional organization that was providing leadership for the field in shaping a scientifically sound framework for the development of research programs in creativity. At the same time, we were casting about for a means of honoring a dear friend, E. Paul Torrance. All the papers presented at the workshop are collected in this volume, together with summaries of the conclusions reached at the Round Table discussions.
