Although vascular plants are excluded from this review, we employ a broad definition of algae that includes the photosynthetic, oxygenic procaryotes. The cellular membrane, as the obligatory target for external signals, harbours complex pathways transducing the signals from the receptors of the external stimuli to the cytoplasmic effector. Other proteins that are monomeric may be found associated with the membrane or in soluble form in the cytoplasm, and' can also function in signal transduction. The contents of the current volume continue the com mitment to a broadly based perspective on research related to con sciousness and self-regulation which was embodied in the previous three volumes. Chapters are included which consider the role of con sciousness in cognitive theory and clinical phenomena. Several of the contributions to this volume are concerned with the nature of self-reg ulation and the role of conscious processing in the mediation of self regulated behavior. Most of the authors adopt a psychobiological ap proach to their subject matter. Our selection of contributors with a bias toward this approach reflects our own views that the psychobiological approach is a very fruitful one and that the 'architecture' of the nervous system places important constraints on the types of theories that are possible in this emerging area. Modern communication techniques, using computers connected through networks, make all data even more vulnerable for these threats. Also, new issues have come up that were not relevant before, e. g. how to add a (digital) signature to an electronic document in such a way that the signer can not deny later on that the document was signed by him/her. Cryptology addresses the above issues. It is at the foundation of all information security. The techniques employed to this end have become increasingly mathematical of nature. This book serves as an introduction to modern cryptographic methods. After a brief survey of classical cryptosystems, it concentrates on three main areas. First of all, stream ciphers and block ciphers are discussed. These systems have extremely fast implementations, but sender and receiver have to share a secret key. Public key cryptosystems (the second main area) make it possible to protect data without a prearranged key. Their security is based on intractable mathematical problems, like the factorization of large numbers. The remaining chapters cover a variety of topics, such as zero-knowledge proofs, secret sharing schemes and authentication codes. Two appendices explain all mathematical prerequisites in great detail. One is on elementary number theory (Euclid's Algorithm, the Chinese Remainder Theorem, quadratic residues, inversion formulas, and continued fractions). This use of ion implantation is being adopted by industry. Another important application is the fundamental study of the physical properties of materials. The First Conference on Ion Implantation in Semiconductors was held at Thousand Oaks, California in 1970. The second conference in this series was held at Garmish-Partenkirchen, Germany, in 1971. At the third conference, which convened at Yorktown Heights, New York in 1973, the emphasis was broadened to include metals and insulators as well as semiconductors. This scope of the conference was still accepted at the fourth conference which was held at Osaka, Japan, in 1974. A huge number of papers had been submitted to this conference. The timing and varying location of these meetings provides an important assembly for investigators from throughout the world to convene for presentation of their new findings on the causes and potential therapies for degenerative retinal disorders. The VIII International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration was held from July 28-25, 1998, at the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Schluchsee, a small town in the Black Forest of southwestern Germany. Most of the participants in this meeting contributed to this volume, and we are appreciative of the efforts of each author in making this publication possible. The research presented at the meeting, and described in this proceedings volume, reflects a strong emphasis on the molecular genetic approach to understa- ing these disorders. Several of the papers provide important new insights into the mechanism of photoreceptor degeneration and cell death. A number of the studies are targeted at retarding or reversing the degeneration process. The 1996 meeting was no exception. Nearly 90 scientists from 15 countries met in the small city of Deadwood, South Dakota, for four days of stimulating talks and posters and incredible scenery. Once more this meeting reflected the changing trends in biochemical research. At the 1982 meeting most of the speakers discussed isolating new enzymes and trying to characterize them. At this meeting many speakers discussed interpretations of three-dimensional struc ture or regulatory elements of the genes controlling for the tissue-specific expression of the enzyme. Hopefully, readers will find the proceedings of the meeting to be of interest. Though they reflects the scientific information that was presented at the meeting, they do not indicate the level of personal interactions that went on during the meeting. Once again, the willingness of the participants to discuss unpublished data and to share thoughts about the future directions of their research helped make this, like our previous seven meetings, a special scientific experience for those who attended. 620 pp. Englisch.
