The first task, obtaining approval for a symposium on the industrial applications, now seems a l…ong time ago. The idea orginated with John Stevens, probably in 1982, from his observation of papers dealing with industrial applications of the Mossbauer effect appearing in the Mossbauer Effect Reference and Data Journal. His initial suggestion for a symposium entitled 'Industrial Applications of the Mossbauer Effect' to be held at a national meeting of the American Chemical Society eventually led to the symposium at the International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies which met in Honolulu, Hawaii in December 1984. This volume is the result of the symposium at the above mentioned Congress, but is not actually the 'proceedings' of the symposium because this volume does not contain all of the over one hundred Mossbauer effect papers that were pre sented at the symposium. Rather it contains a selection of papers that the or ganizing committee for the symposium deemed most appropriate for a volume devoted to industrial applications of the Mossbauer effect. The final volume also contains six chapters that were not a part of the symposium but which are closely related to the topic. There is another difference from many proceedings. 808 pp. Englisch.

For the first time, physicists, mathematicians, biologists, chemists, economists, and others got togeth…er to discuss the relevance of the recent progress in nonlinear classical dynamics for their own research field. Immediately after, pUblication of 'Nonlinear Science Abstracts' started, which, in turn, led to the Physica D Journal and to a rapid increase of the research activity in the whole area with the creation of numerous 'Nonlinear Centers' around the world. During these years great progress has been made in understanding the qualitative behavior of classical dynamical systems and now we can appreciate the beautiful complexity and variety of their motion. Meanwhile, an increasing number of scientists began to wonder whether and how such beautiful structures would persist in quantum motion. Indeed, mainly integrable systems have been previously con sidered by Quantum Mechanics and therefore the problem is open how to describe the qualitative behavior of systems whose classical limit is non-integrable. The present meeting was organized in view of the fact that scientists working in different fields - mathematicians, theoretical physicists, solid state physicists, nuclear physicists, chemists and others - had common problems. The meeting was sponsored by the Special Panel on Syst…ems Sciences of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division. In proposing this meeting the Symposium Directors built upon several preceding NATO conferences in the general area of personnel systems, manpower modelling, and organization. The most recent NATO Conference, entitled 'Manpower Planning and Organization Design,' was held in Stresa, Italy in 1977. That meeting was organized to foster research on the interrelationships between programmatic approaches to personnel planning within organizations and behavioral science approachs to organization design. From that context of corporate planning the total internal organizational perspective was the MACRO view, and the selection, assignment, care and feeding of the people was the MICRO view. Caspers and other participants at the triennial congress of the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology (S. I. L. ) held in Copenhagen, Denmark (1977), the senior… editor approached the international delegates at the business meeting for approval of the concept of holding the First International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology at Sidney (near Victoria) British Columbia on May 1-4, 1979. The S. I. L. agreed to sponsor such a meeting, and this sponsorship in turn led to the provision of space and technical facilities at the Institute of Ocean Sciences Patricia Bay, the Pacific Regional headquarters of the Ocean and Aquatic Sciences component of the federal Fisheri~s and Oceans Department. The National Research Council of Canada provided travel support for a number of non-Canadian participants. Invitations were sent to as many active workers in the field as the senior editor could name, and in addition two representatives of closely allied fields were invited - Dr. V. Standen who works with closely related but terrestrial species, and Dr. J. Grassle who works with polychaetes but especially with Capitella capitata which is much like an oligochaete in some aspects of its biolog- so much so that the senior editor in his salad days succumbed to some ill-founded advice and described Capitella as a new marine tubificid! The addition of these 'outside' influences prevented the group from making a number of unfounded assumptions during discussions, and provided valuable cross-linkages. 540 pp. Englisch.

Perhaps the major new viewpoint that has emerged from recent investigations is that…one can now work inside a time-dependent quantum process, whereas up to now all elementary quantum processes were either stationary, or one worked with asymptotic in-and out-states, i.e. an S-matrix approach. In the-rirst part of this volume, the Quantum Electrodynamics, the present status of the main approaches to this most accurate of all physical theories are discussed: the Hamiltonian approach, the Green's function approach with particular emphasis to bound state problems, and the newer, nonperturbative approach. The latest numerical results on radiative corrections, Lamb shifts and anomalous magnetic moments are reviewed with new results for high Z atoms. The conference was attended by 61 physicists…from 11 countries. The conference was sponsored by the European Physical Society, the Italian Ministry of Public Education, the Italian Ministry of Technological Research, the Sicilian Regional Government and the California Institute of Technology. CONFERENCE FORMAT The Study Conference followed a new intensive format in which the state of our knowledge of the electroweak interaction, and the relation of the electroweak sector to Grand Unified and Superunified Theories was reviewed in some depth. During the two week conference, 54 experimental and theoretical talks were presented, and four evening discussion sessions were held. The Erice surroundings, the wide-ranging conference program, and the fact that nearly all of the participants were directly involved in recent major experimental or theoretical developments, led to animated and very friendly discussions. It was expected that the conference would provide a forum for critical examination and review of the current and important trends in rare earth science and technology. To this end, over 170 papers were presented in both oral and poster sessions by researchers representing some nineteen countries. The collection of refereed papers in this volume attests to the fact that the objectives of the program committee were indeed realized. Papers were delivered by scientists and engineers from 15 countries, and the attendees represented 19 co…untries. As has become the custom at these conferences, the sessions were intense with the coffee breaks and evenings given to informal meetings among the participants. It was a time to renew old friendships, begin new ones, exchange ideas, personally question authors of papers that appeared in the literature since the last conference and find out what was generally happening in Ion Implantation. In recent years it has beome more difficult to get funding to travel to such meetings. To assist the participating authors financial aid was solicited from industry and the Office of Naval Research. We are most grateful for their positive response to our requests. The success of the conference was in part due to their generous contributions. The Program Committee had the unhappy task of the reviewing of more than 170 abstracts. The result of their labors was well worth their effort. Much thanks goes to them for molding the conference into an accurate representation of activities in the field. Behind the scenes in Boulder, local arrangements were handled ably by Graeme Eldridge. In this course another very large field of bioelectrochemistry, i. e. the fie…ld of Membrane Phenomena, was considered, which itself consists of several different, but yet related subfields. Here again, it can be easily stated that it is impossible to give a complete and detailed picture of all membrane phenomena of biological interest in a short course of about one and half week. Therefore the same philosophy, as the one of the first course, was followed, to select a series of lectures at postgraduate level, giving a synthesis of several membrane phenomena chosen among the most'important ones. These lectures should show the large variety of membrane-regulated events occurring in living bodies, and serve as sound interdisciplinary basis to start a special ized study of biological phenomena, for which the investigation using the dual approach, physico-chemical and biological, is unavoidable. It is a rapidly gro…wing research field which began to flourish in the 1960s and which is beginning to produce commercial devices. Significant developments have been made, both in the theory and practical engineering of the subject, but there is evidence of a schism developing between these two approaches. Practical machines have usually been designed on an ad hoc basis, with little use being made of advanced theory. It is difficult to provide a rigorous mathematical treatment of many problems pertinent to a practical situation. This is due, in part at least, to a conceptual rift between theory and practice. The mathematics of optimal systems is well developed, whereas pragmatists are more concerned with vaguer ideas of reasonable and sufficient. In some situations, the quest for optimality can constrain research and retard practical progress. This can occur, for example, if too narrow a view is taken of 'optimal': the accuracy of a system may be optimal whereas its speed, cost, or physical size may be grossly suboptimal. The objective of this book is to present a glimpse of the pragmatic approach to pattern recognition; there already exist a number of excellent texts describing theoretical developments. 504 pp. Englisch.

In Volume 7 methods for studying unconditioned and conditioned behavior were reviewed. Attention was given to both ethological methods and operant conditioning techniques as ap…plied to some selected aspects of behavior. Genetic, developmental, and environmental factors influencing behavior were also discussed. In Volume 8, neurotransmitter systems, and in par ticular brain circuits, were discussed in relation to behavior and to the effects of psychoactive drugs on behavior. The coverage was not exhaus tive because of space limitations. The topics selected for review were, at the time, the focus of considerable experimental effort; they included homeostasis-motivated behaviors: sleep, locomotion, feeding, drinking, and sexual behavior. Brain dopamine systems were therefore discussed in depth, since they were already known to be centrally involved in motivated behaviors. Learning mechanisms and emotion were reviewed in the remaining chapters. In 1984 we initiated an update of behavioral pharmacology to review areas of progress within the same scope as the earlier volumes. This update continues in Volume 19. Among the contributions are several that represent important advances in analyzing behavior and the use of more sophisticated methods to define the effect of drugs on particular aspects of behavior. It was attended by 80 participants from 13 countries, 45 o…f whom were invited speakers. The present volume contains the texts of the invited talks and many of the contributed papers. The relative length of each text is roughly proportional to the length of the workshop presentation. The aim of the workshop was to bring together leading researchers from a number of related disciplines in which strong Coulomb interactions play a dominant role. Compared to the 1977 meeting in Orleans-la-Source, France and the 1982 meeting in Les-Houches, France, it is apparent that the field of strongly coupled plasmas has expanded greatly and has become a very significant field of physics with a wide range of applications. This workshop had a far greater participation of experimental researchers than did the previous two, and some confrontations of real experiments with theoretical calculations occurred. In the two earlier meetings the theoretical presentations were dominated by numerical simulations of static and dynamic properties of various strongly coupled plasmas. The meeting was attended by some 60 participants fr…om 15 different countries. It was the first meeting devoted exclusively to the topic of molecular ions. Its vitality derived from bringing together experts and students from a wide variety of disciplines, whose studies bear upon the structure of molecular ions. The aim of the meeting was to assemble these scientists, representing many countries in Europe and North America, to discuss the advances and capabilities of the various experimental and theoretical approaches and to point out un solved problems and directions for future research. The format, in volving lecturers and students, served as a tutorial. Molecular ions play an important role in very diverse fields of nature such as reactions in the ionosphere, the processes of forma tion of molecules in dense interstellar clouds, and the magnetohydro dynamics of plasmas used for energy generation. Our understanding of the properties of molecular ions, their electronic and geometric structures, has been developing from a variety of sources, as far removed as tickling ions with radiofre quency radiation and smashing them apart at relativistic energies. Various laser techniques are described, and the queen of structural determination, spectroscopy, is well represented. We have sought to bring together the work of many of the researchers most involved in these areas, and have asked them to go beyond their data-to present new insights into response to residential crowding and to speculate about the meaning of their work for the present and future design of residential environments. We feel that this endeavor has been successful, and that the present volume will help to advance our understanding of these issues. The study of residential density is not new. Studies in this area were conducted by sociologists as early as the 1920s, yielding moderate corre lational relationships between census tract density and various social and physical pathologies. This work, however, has been heavily criticized because it did not adequately consider confounding social structural factors, such as social class and ethnicity. The research that will be presented in the present volume represents a new generation of crowding investigation. This conference aimed at providing a forum, whereby specialists from Industry, the Universities and from Government sponsored Institutions could assemble to discuss the extent of our current knowledge. As it transpired, the meeting was also to high light the considerable gaps that still exist in our fundamental understanding of the low temperature behaviour of these materials. On this theme, during the course of the conference, a reference was made to an almost forgotten quotation by Lord Kelvin, who said: 'When you cannot measure what you are speaking about, when you cannot express in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely in your thoughts advanced to the stage of a science, whatever the matter be.' In this way the analysis of electron-photon, ion-photon, atom-photon, or electron-ion coincidences from electron-atom, ion-atom, or atom-atom collisional excitation has led to a breakthrough such that the above quantities represent most crucial and sensitive tests for theories of atomic collision processes. Similarly, the powerful (e, 2e) experiments (electron-electron coincidences from impact ionization of atoms) have attracted much attention where improved experimental studies and detailed theoretical description provide a wealth of information on either the col lisional ionization process or the atomic structure of the target atom. Interference effects, many-electron correlations, and energy and angular momen tum exchange between electrons in a Coulomb field playa decisive role in the under standing of postcollision interactions. New results on coherence effects and orienta tion and alignment in collisional processes of ions with surfaces and crystal lattices show links to relevant interference phenomena in atomic collisions. The symposium brought together Theoretical Chemists, Solid State Physicists, Experimen tal Chemists and Crystallographers. One of it…s major aims was to increase interaction between these diverse groups which often use very different languages to describe similar concepts. The devel opment of a common language, or at least the acquisition of a multilingual capability, is a necessity if the field is to prosper. Much depends in this field on the interplay between theory and experiment. Accordingly this volume begins with two introduc tory chapters, one theoretical and the other experimental, which contain much of the background material needed for a through under standing of the field. The remaining sections describe a wide variety of applications and illustrate, we believe, the central role of charge densities in the understanding of chemical bonding. We are most indebted to the Divisions of Inorganic and Phy sical Chemistry of the American Chemical Society, which provided the stimulus for the symposium and gave generous financial support. This is not to minimize the importance of land animals and plants in their environment or the significance of air pollution as it relates to ecology. It m…erely indicates that water pollution is a problem of sufficiently broad magnitude to warrant consideration by itself. Water pollution is a problem which requires the attention of a variety of disciplines. The presentation tends therefore to follow the problem ap proach, as do most interdisciplinary topics. An appreciation of various viewpoints is needed among chemists, ecologists, economists, engineers, lawyers, limnologists, managers, microbiologists, and politicians, whose communications are often 'hung up' in each other's jargon. Perhaps the presentation is too elementary at times. This was done in an attempt to bridge the diverse backgrounds of those concerned with the subject. It is hoped that engineers, economists, biologists, public servants, and others will gain a greater appreciation of the interrelationship of gross observations and biological events that occur at the cellular and molecular level. Lack of such understanding is, to a large extent, the reason for our present environmental condition. At other times the presentation is perhaps too technical. The…meeting was attended by about eighty scholars, including psychologists, neurologists, physicists and other scientists, from fourteen different countries. During the symposium some fifty research papers were presented and a series of tutorial review papers were read and discussed. The research presentations have been published in a special issue of the international journal of psychonomics 'Acta Psychologica' (Vol. 48, 1981). The present book is a compilation of the tutorial papers. The tutorials were arranged around early versions of the chapters now appearing in this book. The long discussions at the Veldhoven tutorial sessions resulted in extensive revisions of the texts prior to this publication. Unfortunately this led to a delay in publication, but we feel that this was justified by a greater depth of understanding which, in our opinion, has significantly increased the quality of the book. As they now stand, the chapters cover most of the issues relevant to the study of motion perception. Also they clearly reflect the intensive exchange of knowledge that took place during the symposium. As such we think that this book can be used both as an advanced text for students and scientists alike and as a comprehensive reference source. 284 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the four years since the 1978 Symposium on the Application of Short-Term Bioassays in the Fractionation and Analysis of Complex Environmental Mixtures the use of short-term bioassays to evaluate potential health hazards of comple…x environmental mixtures has substantially increased. Increased research activity has been particularly noticeable in mobile source emissions, where initial observations on the mutagenic activity of diesel particulate extracts reported at the 1978 symposium stimulated the development of major research programs in government and industry. In the absence of appropriate reference materials, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency initiated comparative genotoxicity studies to determine the relative mutagenic and carcinogenic activity and, ultimately, the potential human health risk due to exposure to various complex emission products. Among the materials investigated were those of known health risk, such as coke oven and roofing tar emissions and cigarette smoke condensates, and those of unknown hazard, such as exhaust from diesel-and gasoline-powered vehicles. Studies on diesel emission products proved useful in short term bioassay development, as the diesel exhaust extracts were genetically active with low cellular toxicity and could be obtained in relatively large quantities. Availability of such samples aided chemical characterization, and it was eventually determined that the nitro-polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons were among the mutagenic components of diesel exhaust particulate. 608 pp. Englisch.
