Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -Despite an enormous investment of effort throughout the world, cancer is still a major barrier to human longevity. Cancer deaths are estimated to be more than five million globally. Currently responsible for about 20% of all deaths in developed coun tries, the burden of cancer is steadily in…creasing in the developing world, following the control of malnutrition and infectious and parasitic diseases. Deeply impressed by the report of the Symposium on Geographic Pathology and Demography of Cancer held at Oxford in 1950, and through his preliminary work on cancer mortality statistics in Japan, Professor M. Segi decided to devote his life to the fight against cancer by establishing worldwide comparative cancer statistics-one of the landmarks in cancer studies and in cancer prevention strategies. He and his associates published six volumes of Cancer Mortality in 24 Countries with reliable mortality statistics covering 1950-1967, using the world population which he had derived as a standard. These publications rapidly became standard works of reference on the subject throughout the world. Professor Segi was a pioneer of cancer epidemiology in Japan. He cleaved a path through the jungle of cancer using epidemiological methods. By promoting cancer studies, he overcame the poor understanding of malignant disease which existed after World War II, when cancer mortality rates were still low.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This volume of essays grew out of a symposium organized by Judith Hoch-Smith and Anita Spring for the 1974 American Anthropological Association meetings in Mexico City. The two-part symposium was enti tled 'Women in Ritual and Symbolic Systems: I. Midwives, Madonnas, and Mediums; ll. Prostit…utes, Witches, and Androgynes. ' The sym posium participants were asked to explore theological, ritual, and sym bolic aspects-both positive and negative-of the feminine cultural do main, using ethnographic materials with which they were familiar. The resulting papers have been revised, edited, and gathered together in Women in Ritual and Symbolic Roles. The theoretical importance of these papers for the study of women's participation in culture and society rests on the assumption that reli gious ideas are paramount forces in social life, that relationships be tween the sexes, the nature of female sexuality, and the social and cul tural roles of women are in large part defined by religious ideas. That this proposition remains valid long after religion itself has ceased to be a living truth in the lives of many people can be seen from the tenacious ness of Judeo-Christian ideas about women in the contemporary West ern world. Both the expansion of life options for women and the creation of more positive cultural images of the female are intimately related to changes in the my tho-symbolic portraits that people carry around in their heads. These portraits are almost exclusively constructed from mythological and religious conceptions inherent in all facets of culture.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 308 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This book includes the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Washington State University, Pullman, Washington from July 26 until August 6, 1982. Although genetic engineering in eukaryotes is best developed in yeast and mammalian cells, the reader will find that some emphasi…s has been put on plant systems. Indeed, it was our position that the development of plant cell genetic transformation would benefit from the interactions between a comparatively smaller number of fungal and animal cell experts and a larger number of plant cell specialists representing various aspects of plant molecular genetic research. On the other hand, it is clear that the ultimate achievements of plant genetic engineering will have a tremendous ~pact on, among other things, food production without generating the problems of ethics encountered when one contempla-tes the genetic modification of human beings. Therefore, this slight bias in favor of the plant kingdom simply reflects our belief that a 'second green revolution' will benefit mankind to a greater extent than any other kind of genetic engine ering. The keynote lecture of the Institute was delivered by Dr. John Slaughter, Director of the National Science Foundation, whom we deeply thank for his words of encouragement and commitment to the genetic manipulation of plants.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -We try in this book to provide a detailed but readable, technical but accessible monograph on energy in the United States. We treat energy as a multidisciplinary challenge and apply the standard tools of economists, physicists, engi…neers, policy analysts, and, some might claim, fortune tellers. We hope that it will be used in classrooms of various types, and read by the general reader as well. That increased energy efficiency should be the first priority of energy policymakers is a conclusion, not an assumption, of our analysis. Many analysts have arrived at this conclusion while working separately on energy supply problems. The magnitude and scope of supply problems, primarily problems of high prices and environmental costs, lead one inexorably back to reducing demand growth as the first, most important step in any plausible energy future. We examine, in some depth, why much of the past literature on energy still points, fallaciously in our opinion, to high energy c- v Preface vi sumption futures. This is in Part I (called 'A Short History of the Future'). We devote one-third of the book (Part II) to energy resources, their internal and external costs, and the quantities of energy to be derived from these resources. This analysis provides a context within which the economic and social value of energy conservation options can be assessed. 276 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The NATO Science Committee and its subsidiary Programme Panels provide support for Advanced Research Institutes (ARI) in various fields. The idea is to bring together scientists of a chosen field with the hope that they will achieve… a consensus on research direc tions for the future, and make recommendations for the benefit of a wider scientific community. Attendance is therefore limited to those whose experience and expertise make the conclusions significant and acceptable to the wider community. Participants are selected on the basis of substantial track records in research or in the synthesis of research results to serve mankind. The proposal for a one-week ARIon Earth Observation and In formation Systems was initiated by the NATO Special Programme Panel on Systems Science (SPPOSS). In approving the ARI, the senior NATO Science Committee identified the subject as one of universal impor tance, requiring a broad perspective on the development of opera tional systems based on successful experimental systems. The general purpose of this ARI was to address the critical problems of integrating the relatively new science and technology of remote sensing into operational earth observation and manage ment information systems. The main problems of concern were those related to systems design, organization, development of infrastruc ture, and use of information in decision processes. The main empha sis was on problems of transferring technologies and methods from experimental to operational systems. 492 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Terrorism, continuing unabated in the contemporary world, is having a serious impact on the lives of people and nations. Once, only govern ments and ruling classes possessed the power to coerce large segments of the world's peoples.… Today, a handful of thugs, covered and concealed by a collection of terrorist organizations, are disturbing people every where by perpetrating dramatic criminal acts-bombings, kidnappings, assassinations, etc.-on an almost daily basis, in places specifically cho sen for their vulnerability: a railroad train, a pub, a beachfront apartment, a bus, a restaurant. Furthermore, a few of the world's most notorious terrorist groups are associated in a loose coalition, which has left around the earth a trail of violent crimes against humanity of the most heinous type. Among these outrages are random murder, including the killing of innocents, and barricade and hostage situations involving the elderly and young children. Many of the victims of these terrorists are randomly selected for the sole purpose of obtaining maximum shock action calculated to attract widespread exposure via the communications media. A dramatic example is the assassination of Lord Louis Mountbatten, one of the most distinguished soldier-statesmen of the century, by terrorists of the Pro visional Wing of the Irish Republican Army (LR.A.). 260 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -also many newer lines of research, to which I will return below, are represented in various chapters. And finally, I have included a sepa rate unit on methods for the study of aggression-a feature that I believe to be unique to the…present volume. In these ways, I have at tempted to produce a text that is as broad and eclectic in coverage as I could make it. While the present volume grew, in part, out of my desire to pro duce what I thought might prove to be a useful teaching aid, it also developed out of a second major motive. During the past few years, a large number of new-and to me, exciting-lines of investigation have emerged in rapid order. These have been extremely varied in scope, including, among many others, such diverse topics as the effects of sexual arousal upon aggression, the impact of environmental factors (e. g. , heat, noise, crowding) upon such behavior, interracial aggres sion, and the influence of heightened self-awareness. Despite the fact that such topics have already generated a considerable amount of re search, they were not, to my knowledge, adequately represented irt any existing volume. Given this state of affairs, it seemed to me that a reasonably comprehensive summary of this newer work might prove both useful and timely. 320 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -How are we to understand the complex forces that shape human behavior A variety of diverse perspectives, drawing upon studies of human behavioral ontogeny, as well as humanity's evolutionary heri tage, seem to provide the best likel…ihood of success. It is in the attempt to synthesize such potentially disparate approaches to human devel opment into an integrated whole that we undertake this series on the Genesis of Behavior. In many respects, the incredible burgeoning of research in child development over the last decade or two seems like a thousand lines of inquiry spreading outward in an incoherent starburst of effort. The need exists to provide, on an ongoing basis, an arena of discourse within which the threads of continuity between those diverse lines of research on human development can be woven into a fabric of meaning and understanding. Scientists, scholars, and those who attempt to translate their efforts into the practical realities of the care and guidance of infants and children are the audience that we seek to reach. Each requires the opportunity to see-to the degree that our knowledge in given areas permits-various aspects of development in a coherent, integrated fashion. It is hoped that this series, which will bring together research on infant biology, developing infant capacities, animal models, the impact of social, cultural, and familial forces on development, and the distorted products of such forces under certain circumstances, will serve these important social and scientific needs. 360 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the last few years the physics of turbulent plasma has undergone rapid development, beginning with the first works, in which the term 'turbulence' was used in various ways, and ending with the fundamental studies which provide a…thorough examina tion of the turbulent state of plasma. In physics it is usually found that value is not so much contained in specific results for a partic ular field as it is in the more general outlook and overall view of the problem. Occasionally the older results take on new mean ing after the general view of things is perfected. In the case of the physics of turbulent plasma, this general picture is now com plete, for the most part. The first review devoted to the problem of plasma turbulence was written by B. B. Kadomtsev [in 'Problems in Plasma Theory,' edited by M. A. Leontovich, Volume 4, Moscow, Atomizdat (1964), p. 188; English Translation: 'Plasma Turbulence,' Academic Press, London (1965)]. 556 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Advances in systems technology are creating the need for alphanumeric displays and component technology to satisfy this need. The field of alphanumeric displays covers appli cations from the single character lift indicator to the th…ousand-plus character computer read out. A survey of the state of alphanumeric displays helps the user of display devices to make a choice, for a particular application, between the various devices available now or in the near future. It is essential to consider the circuits and the display device together in order to obtain a clear picture of the economics of the different techniques. In general, a display module is controlled by binary input signals at normal logic pow ers and may be subdivided into five basic elements: 1) data memory, 2) character generator, 3) driving circuits, 4) scanning circuits, and 5) display device. The data memory is essential to make the display module independent of the system. Normally, this will be an electronic memory, but in some cases, the display device will have an inherent memory. The character generator must perform two functions: 1) convert the binary code to a 'lout of n' form to select the chosen character out of the on' available, and 2) create the character format, although in some cases this is inherent in the display device. 232 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This and its companion Volumes 4 and 6 document the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution held in Bordeaux, France, July 9-13, 1984. This symposium was the continuation of the series of symposia i…nitiated in 1976 in Albany, New York under the title 'Micellization, Solubilization and Microemulsions'. The next two symposia were labelled 'Solution Chemistry of Surfactants' and 'Solution Behavior of Surfactants: Theoretical and Applied Aspects' held in Knoxville, TN in 1978 and Potsdam, N. Y. in 1980, respectively. In 1982 at the time of the 4th Symposium in this series, it became amply evident that there was a definite need to have more a generic title to describe these biennial events, and after much deliberation it was decided that an appropriate title would be 'Surfactants in Solution' as both the aggregation and adsorption aspects of surfactants were addressed. So the 4th Symposium was held in 1982 in Lund, Sweden, under this new rubric, and it was decided to continue these symposia in the future under this appellation. Naturally, the Bordeaux Symposium was dubbed as the 5th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution, and our logo became SIS which is very apropos and appealing. It was in Bordeaux that the decision was made to hold the 6th SIS Symposium in New Delhi and it is scheduled for August 18-22, 1986 in the capital of India. 608 pp. Englisch.

Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Energy Minerals and Industry, Washington, DC, and Office of Health and Ecological Effects, Health…Effects Re search Laboratory, Biochemistry Branch, Research Triangle Park, NC. The symposium consisted of 24 formal presentations that amplify the three major topics discussed during the symposium: an overview of short-term bioassay systems; current methodology involving the collection and chemical analysis of environmental samples; and current research in volving the use of short-term bioassays in the fractionation and analysis of complex environmental mixtures. The purpose of this symposium was to present the state-of-the-art tech niques in bioassay and chemical analysis as applied to com plex mixtures and to foster continued advancement of this important area. Complex mixtures discussed include ambient air and water, waste water, drinking water, shale oil, syn thetic fuels, automobile exhaust, diesel particulate, coal fly ash, cigarette smoke condensates, and food products. It is our hope that this volume will serve as a refer ence to catalyze and encourage further research in this field. Michael D. Waters, Ph. D. Stephen Nesnow, Ph. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In marriage, partners bring together preexisting psychological and cul tural histories which may be quite disparate. The idea that 'love con quers all' does not account for the complexities involved in the development of a contempor…ary partnership. Societal changes over the past few decades have resulted in impor tant shifts in patterns of relationships. Lengthened life spans, decreased incidence and severity of illness and disability, and the availability of contraception have affected our lives and plans substantially. Among the effects are marriages that last longer than they ever have and produce fewer children, despite the high divorce rate. Values and expectations in marriage have also changed over the past several decades, shifting from an emphasis on survival and eco nomic security to a focus on companionship, love, and communication. The desire for self-fulfillment has superseded more traditional concerns about family loyalty Zlnd responsibility. Thus, divorce is often sought as a solution to frustration, disappointment, and conflict. A societal change that has had considerable influence on individ uals and their relationships has been the emergence of the women's movement and changing roles and expectations for women. This change has brought new demands, fulfillments, and conflicts. Current styles of marriage have shifted from an automatic acceptance of clearly designated gender-determined roles toward more egalitarian and interdependent relationships with partners also expressing their own goals, styles, and personalities. The dual career or dual worker family has emerged as the dominant family structure in the United States. 256 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The central theme of this monograph is that the cosine seminvariants are the key to crystal structures. The cosine seminvariants are the cosines of those linear combinations of the phases (the so-called structure seminvariants) whos…e values, for a given functional form for the geometric structure factor, are uniquely determined by the crystal structure alone and are there fore independent of the choice of permissible origin. It follows that the cosine seminvariants themselves are uniquely determined, in general, by the observed magnitudes of the normalized structure factors. The values of the cosine seminvariants in turn lead unambiguously to the values of the individual phases and thus to the crystal structure by means of the E-map (Fourier synthesis). It is this property of the cosine seminvariants, that they serve to link the observed magnitudes with the desired phases of the normalized structure factors, which accounts for their importance and explains the emphasis which is here placed on their role. 420 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Workshop on 'Evolutionary Tinkering in Gene Expression' which was held at the end of August 1988. was planned to celebrate 20 successful Advanced Study Institutes (A. S. I.) in Molecular and Cell Biology. The first Institute was… held in 1966 on the Island of Spetsai. after a N. A. T. O. suggestion and was entirely financed by N. A. T. O. The success was immediately so great that the Institute grew very rapidly and in the following years. N. A. T. O .- E. M. B. O. (since 1972) and F. E. B. S. (since 1981) co-sponsored it. Since the start of the AS! the U. S. National Science Foundation has granted travel money for a limited number of American participants each year. In addition. the course was supported by minor industrial subsidies of varying amounts which enabled the organizers to improve some of the local facilities particularly with respect to the lecture hall. In particular. Boehringer Mannheim has contributed since 1966. Furthermore. the Greek Ministry of Science and Culture has provided support at least for a social event during each ASI. 288 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book contains the papers presented at the Twenty-Seventh Annual Biology Division Research Conference which was held April 1-4, 1974 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The topic of the symposium was Mechanisms in Recombination and it fol…lows by exactly twenty years the previous Gatlinburg Symposium on Genetic Recombination. During this interval, and the preceding years as well, the process of recombination has remained a central and tantalizing problem for geneticists. The subject assumes added significance with the recent appeal by a committee of leading scientists for a moratorium on the construction of certain types of recombinant molecules. That autonomously replicating molecules linking portions of pro karyotic and eukaryotic DNA can now be produced in vitro attests to the technical advances that have taken place in this field. Nevertheless, the details underlying the process in vivo continue to be elusive. This symposium brought together individuals studying recombi nation in organisms as widely separated as bacteriophage and mammals and using disciplinary approaches of comparable diversity. Conse quently the present volume summarizes much of current strategies and concepts concerning the subject. The meeting was sponsored by the Biology Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (operated by the Union Carbide Corporation for the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission) with the support and encour agement of its director, H. I. Adler. The organizing committee was chaired by J. K. Setlow and included R. F. Grell, R. D. Hotchkiss and E. Volkin. Special thanks are due to the speakers, to I. R. 476 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The tradition of meeting together periodically at Fiesole, in Florence, by now dear to those interested in the problems of Kinins, was respected once again. This year the Symposium 'Kinin 1975' was held on the 15th - 17th of July. P…articipation at the Symposium drew attention to the fact that 1975 was a particularly difficult year due to the delicate international economic situation as well as the time restrictions for organizing the Symposium as a satellite conference to the Sixth International Congress of Pharmacology held in Helsinki, Finland. Despite these difficulties, the 'Kinin 175' Symposium was an unquestioned success, due, in great part, to the more than 40 contributors who presented their most current studies at the customary high scientific standard, presentations that provoked and stimulated considerable discussion and debate. While our family tree now includes new and active members, the presence of many members of our 'Kinin' society unable to attend was missed. In particular, we mourne the death of Professor E. Werle, one of the most outstanding pioneers in the field of the kallikrein-kinin system. His friendship, participation and counsel was, and will continue to be, sorely missed by his many colleagues and students who are indebted to him for his voluminous and scientifically expert contributions continued until the very end of his most full and productive life. As in the past, the atmosphere of friendship and relaxation of the Symposium enhanced the very useful communication and exchange of ideas and information amongst the participants. 416 pp. Englisch.

Although seemingly simple, these experiments tackle a very complex subject with which psychologists, linguists, and others are only be…ginning to come to grips. Sokolov and his group have succeeded admirably in splitting the subject apart by driving in the wedges of objective measurement and unique experimental formulations. Chapter IX dips into the neurology and neurophysiology of motor speech and its feedback mechanisms and the dynamic localization and organization of the cerebral mechanisms responsible for symbolic formulation of speech and thought. The bibliography brings together a considerable number of Russian publications on this subject, as well as some of the pertinent American and European literature. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The convening of the 3rd International Workshop on Monoclonal Antibodies and Breast Cancer had the character of a self-search exercise. After almost a decade of research in the basic and applied aspects of the use of serological mea…ns to diagnose and possibly treat breast cancer several milestones have been reached. Among them a clear understanding of immunopathological use and limitations of monoclonal antibodies against breast epithelium, the complete development and clinical use of immunoassays for circulating breast epithelial antigens, the striking advances in the diagnostic use of monoclonal antibodies to estrogen and progesterone receptor proteins and the first communications on proposed immunotherapeutic use of different conjugates of anti-breast antibodies. New areas of investigation have developed in our field, some which are reaching a full blossom while others are still facing obstacles and at times a re-definition of their goals and objectives. These meetings have acted in a way as a clearing house and have permitted their attendees to derive predictions that have helped shape future research and fine-tune objectives. But above all, the re-evaluation of past research at these Workshops and the renewed excitement brought to them by new information has helped generate a momentum and enthusiasm that assures for the future large scientific gains. 272 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The purpose of this book is to present an account of several different studies of the relationship of food additives to child behavior and learn ing problems. Because the outcome of these studies has deep, personal interest for many… parents and their children, I have tried to present the studies in such a way that the logic and evidence of the studies is com prehensible to informed adults interested in weighing the facts for themselves. Unfortunately, the facts do not always follow a straightfor ward course. Part of my purpose has been to show the complexities lying in the way of the answers to apparently simple questions. I believe it is healthy and important for parents to examine the scientific evidence on issues affecting their daily lives, and to become aware of the process of research surrounding controversial claims regarding new therapies. New ideas in behavioral science are often difficult to track down and evaluate, and consequently there may be a large gap between therapeu tic claims and evidence bearing on those claims. The mother who won ders whether her child should be treated with a special diet is unlikely to have the facts necessary to make a judgment of the costs and benefits. She should however, know some of the major pitfalls in coming to a conclusion for or against such a course. 188 pp. Englisch.
