The goal of this project is to develop techniques for modeling real objects and/or environments into geometric and photometric models through computer vision techniques. By deve…loping such techniques, time consuming modeling process, currently un dertaken by human programmers, can be (semi-)automatically performed, and, as a result, we can drastically shorten the developing time of such virtual reality systems, reduce their developing cost, and widen their application areas. Originally, we began to develop geometric modeling techniques that acquire shape information of objects/environments for object recognition. Soon, this effort evolved into an independent modeling project, virtual-reality modeling, with the inclusion of photometric modeling aspects that acquire appearance information, such as color, texture, and smoothness. Over the course of this development, it became apparent that environmental modeling techniques were necessary when applying our techniques to mixed realities that seamlessly combine generated virtual models with other real/virtual images. The material in his book covers these aspects of development.

Intellectual property rights held by public organizations and researchers are now increasingly transferred to private organizations to accelerate the diffusion and enhance the value of knowledge produced by public agencies and universities. Additionally, new institutions such as university offices of technology transfer, venture capital markets, and a variety of consortia in knowledge-intensive industries are being established throughout the United States and in other parts of the world. These changes have led to a repositioning of the state in systems of innovation and an increase in the proprietary character of technical information. The purpose of this book is to review and analyze i) contemporary transitions in agricultural knowledge generation and extension arrangements from an empirical perspective, and ii) emerging and contradictory perspectives as to how knowledge systems can be assessed effectively. The authors aim to provide the reader with a better understanding of the implications of new biotechnologies and new intellectual property rights regimes on public-private relations in science, the extent to which benefits from scientific knowledge are being appropriated by private sector actors, the diversity and possible outcomes of privatization initiatives in extension, and prospects for public goods production and ecological sustainability given contemporary trends. The book presents contrasting views on the degree of complementarity and substitution between private and public sector investments in research and extension. Recognizing that the labels `public' and `private' are incomplete and at times misleading descriptions of the structure and function of coordinating bodies in social systems, the analyses highlight ways in which public and private spaces and modes of functioning combine. In addition to illustrating a broad range of analytic methodologies useful for studying organizational questions in knowledge systems, the authors identify the implications of a range of past and potential institutional innovations.

This series was established at the ZFMK in the early 1980s, and has variably focused on systematics and ecology of tropical organisms, with an emphasis on Africa. Previous vol…umes are those edited by Schuchmann (1985), Peters and Hutterer (1990), Ulrich (1997), and Rheinwald (2000). The symposium in 2004 was organized by the Entomology Department under the direction of Michael Schmitt. The intention was to focus on Africa rather than on a particular taxon, and to highlight biodiversity at all levels ranging from molecules to ecosystems. This focus was timely partly because of the currently running BIOTA Africa programmes (BIOdiversity Monitoring Transect Analysis in Africa). BIOTA is an interdisciplinary research project focusing on sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity in Africa . Session titles were Biogeography and Speciation Processes, Phylogenetic Patterns and Systematics, Diversity Declines and Conservation, and Applied Biodiversity Informatics. Each session was opened by an invited speaker, and all together 77 lectures and 59 posters were presented. There were over 200 participants and it was gratifying to us to meet colleagues from 26 nations, including Russia, Ukraine, Japan, USA, and ten African countries. We thank all participants for their valuable contributions.

The pre…vious workshop was held in Berlin in the year 2000. The areas of interest of QofIS cover the design, implementation and provision of Quality of Service, spanning key issues of current and emerging communication systems such as packet-level issues, flow-level issues, network-level issues, architectural issues, and applications. The emphasis of the QofIS2001 w orkshop is on horizontal (end-to-end) as well as vertical (top-down) provision of quality of services, covering all components of end systems and networks, with the aim of identifying solutions enabling feasible and coherent QoS provision. The QofIS2001 cal l for papers attracted 87 submissions from 23 Asian, Australian, European, North American, and South American countries. These were subject to thorough review work by the Programme Committee members and additional reviewers who carried out their work using a specially built conference system, WebChairing, developed in Coimbra by Flor de Utopia, that allowed full control of the submission and reviewing processes. As I wrote in the preface of those proceedings, data management in telecommuni- tions is an interesting area of research given the fact that both service management and service provisioning are very data intensive, and pose extreme requirements on data management technology. Given the feedback on the previous workshop we decided to keep the same program set-up for this workshop: an invited speaker, a collection of research papers, and a panel discussion. We received 18 good quality papers from which we selected 12 to construct a very interesting program. The program has been divided into four sections. The first section focuses on CDR data warehouse and data mining technology. Data warehousing and data mining around customer usage data remains an important area of interest for telecommunication operators. The growing competition, especially in the mobile market, means that operators have to put more effort into customer retention and satisfaction. The second section focuses on performance issues around databases in telecommunication. Since telecommunication databases are characterized by their extreme requirements, for example in terms of volumes of data to be processed or response times, high volume data management and embedded and real-time data management are key aspects of the telecommunication data management problems in today's operational environments. 192 pp. Englisch.

More often Sn and Lg are used to infer the attenuation structure of the lithosphere. The seismic phase Sn is a high-frequency shear-wave (typically from 1 to 4 Hz…and occasionally higher) that travels in the lithospheric mantle above the negative velocity gradient which usually marks the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary. Sn has been reported out to distances of 35° (e. g. , MOLNAR and OLIVER, 1969; HUESTIS et aI. , 1973). Sn arrives as a high-frequency wave train lasting tens of seconds and up to 1 to 2 minutes. Sn velocities are typically 4. 7 km/s in stable continental and oceanic lithosphere (HUESTIS et al. , 1973) and as low as 4. 3 km/s (KADINSKY-CADE et al. , 1981) in more tectonically active regions. Lg is a complex short period guided wave consisting of high-frequency P and S energy which travels primarily in the earth's crust at frequencies typically between 0. 5 and 5 Hz. It has been modeled as higher-mode Love and Rayleigh waves as well as a sequence of multiply reflected post-critical S waves trapped in a crustal guide (BOUCHON, 1982; KENNETT, 1986; BOSTOCK and KENNETT, 1990). Lg has been observed not to propagate in oceanic or very thin continental crust (PRESS and EWING, 1952; SEARLE, 1975; ZHANG and LAY, 1995). 211 pp. Englisch.

Whentheparticipantsmeet,wetrytofocusthediscussionsupontheconc- tual issues which emerge. Security protocols link naturally to many other areas of Computer Science, and deep water can be reached very quickly. Afterwards, we invite participants to re-draft their position papers in a way which exposes the emergent issues but leaves open the way to their further development. We also prepare written transcripts of the recorded discussions. These are edited (in some cases very heavily) to illustrate the way in which the di erent arguments and perspectives have interacted. We publish these proceedings as an invitation to the research community.
