In Chapter 2 we start integrating differential forms of degree one along curves in Rn. This already allows some applications of the ideas of Chapter 1. This material is not used in the rest of the book. In Chapter 3 we present the basic notions of differentiable manifolds. It is useful (but not essential) that the reader be familiar with the notion ofa regular surface in R3. In Chapter 4 we introduce the notion of manifold with boundary and prove Stokes theorem and Poincare's lemma. Starting from this basic material, we could follow any of the possi ble routes for applications: Topology, Differential Geometry, Mechanics, Lie Groups, etc. We have chosen Differential Geometry. Nevertheless, a comprehensive approach to climate change respon se, taking into account all sources and sinks of all greenhouse gases, is explicitly allowed in the Framework Convention on Clima te Change. The Netherlands' policy on climate already addresses all greenhouse gases. In order to stimulate the development of international climate policy on this subject, the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Physical Planning and Environment supported the initative of organizing an international symposium on the science and policy of the non-C0 greenhouse gases. An important rationale behind 2 this initative was recognizing that for the non-C0 greenhouse 2 gases, abatement options are available that do not only address other environmental problems but that also do not require the major structural changes in society that an effective CO policy 2 may.

The proceedings of these conferences were published by Applied Science Publishers (1978) and by D. ReideIlKluwer Publishing Company (1982, 1986 and 1990). While the first two Conferences have dealt essentially with high temperature alloys for gas turbines (COST 50), the third and fourth Conferences held in 1986 and 1990 were concerned with a broader range of topics, including the work of the third round of COST-50 (1972-1983), that of COST-50l, which was initiated in 1981 and COST 505 (1983-1990).

Basically, the calculations only involved rational expressions,…but they turned out to be extremely complicated, because the third and fourth order terms had to be included. After several months of filling whole blocks of paper with for mulas, I was close to resignation. But, by a lucky incident, I met a colleague who showed me the computer algebra package Reduce. It still required a lot of patience and tricks, but Reduce finally did produce the desired results. After this experience, I wondered, why only a few engineers and scientists were aware of the strengths of such computer algebra programs. The mathematical treatment of scientific problems often leads to calculations which can only be solved 'by hand' with a considerable investment of time, while a suitable com puter algebra program produces the solution within a couple of seconds or min utes. Even if a closed symbolic solution is not possible, such programs can often simplify a problem, before the cruder tool of numerical simulations is applied. 430 pp. Englisch.
