The immediate post-revolutionary period in China is viewe…d here in the wider context of Britain and France's post-imperial decline and expressions such as 'imperialism imprisoned' and 'captive capitalism' are some new and interchangeable terms employed in this context. In contrast to the traditional interpretation that Chinese policies regarding the old imperial powers involved nationalization of foreign companies through the expropriation of their property, this study shows that almost no such practice took place. Rather, instances of appropriation only occurred following an indirect, subtle and protracted process. It is precisely because of the uniqueness of the process and its relatively long duration that the new regime in China succeeded in achieving its goals, perhaps even exceeding them. This study is based on hitherto inaccessible public, private and company archives in Britain, France and China.

Neuware - The first libraries of complementary DNA (cDNA) clones were con structed in the mid-to-late 1970s using RNA-dependent DNA polymerase (reverse transcriptase) to convert poly A\* mRNA into double-stranded cDNA suitable for insertion into prokaryotic vectors. Since then cDNA technology has become a f…undamental tool for the molecular biologist and at the same time some very significant advances have occurred in the methods for con structing and screening cDNA libraries. It is not the aim of cDNA Library Protocols to give a comprehensive review of all cDNA library-based methodologies; instead we present a series of up-to-date protocols that together should give a good grounding of proce dures associated with the construction and use of cDNA libraries. In deciding what to include, we endeavored to combine up-to-date versions of some of the most widely used protocols with some very usefiil newer techniques. cDNA Library Protocols should therefore be especially useful to the investigator who is new to the use of cDNA libraries, but should also be of value to the more experienced worker. Chapters 1-5 concentrate on cDNA library construction and manipula tion, Chapters 6 and 7 describe means of cloning difficult-to-obtain ends of cDNAs, Chapters 8-18 give various approaches to the screening of cDNA libraries, and the remaining chapters present methods of analysis of cDNA clones including details of how to analyze cDNA sequence data and how to make use of the wealth of cDNA data emerging from the human genome project.

As most of you know, the name of the person of Dr. Smit Sibinga is unbreakably con nected with the annual symposium in Groningen which he has organized each year from the very start, 20 years ago. The reputation of any symposium depends heavily on the quality of the lectures. I think it is not possible to organize 20 symposia in a row if the topics lack actual relevance and the speakers are not of excellent reputation. Dr. Smit Sibinga has proven to have a keen eye for selecting interesting themes and eminent speakers. Although a lot of different topics have been dealt with in the past 20 years, which each attracted the attention of a different group in the field of blood transfusion, it is not surprising that after a tradition of 20 years several speakers but also a lot of attendees are not for the first time in Groningen to participate in this event. It gives the symposium a unique atmosphere of intimacy. It is not hard to admit that most of the newer developments in transfusion medicine take place outside the Netherlands.

Protocol for High-Speed Networks is a 'working conference'. That explains we have privileged high quality papers describing on-going research and novel ideas. The number of selected papers was kept low in order to leave room for discussion on each paper. Together with the technical sessions, working sessions were organized on hot topics. The road… to gratification of this aspiration since then has been rather bumpy, however one wants to look at recent events. Indeed, since 1989 the relationship between the EU and the economies in transition has been ebbing and flowing with the evolution of two main strands of policy stances in the EU. One has been deep skepticism about bringing these countries into the Union at all in any foreseeable future. This in spite of the fact that, after long hesitation, in mid 1993 the EU Member States committed themselves eventually to explore accession with selected transition economies, as well as Cyprus and Malta. The other has been their evolving attitude toward their own integration endeavors. Hence the dilemmas, in the EU's parlance, of the 'deepening versus widening' conundrum. That indeed constitutes the paramount issue addressed in the present investigation.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The purpose of this monograph is to develop a very general approach to the algebra ization of sententiallogics, to show its results on a number of particular logics, and to relate it to other existing approaches, namely to those bas…ed on logical matrices and the equational consequence developed by Blok, Czelakowski, Pigozzi and others. The main distinctive feature of our approachlies in the mathematical objects used as models of a sententiallogic: We use abstract logics, while the dassical approaches use logical matrices. Using models with more structure allows us to reflect in them the metalogical properties of the sentential logic. Since an abstract logic can be viewed as a 'bundle' or family of matrices, one might think that the new models are essentially equivalent to the old ones; but we believe, after an overall appreciation of the work done in this area, that it is precisely the treatment of an abstract logic as a single object that gives rise to a useful -and beautiful- mathematical theory, able to explain the connections, not only at the logical Ievel but at the metalogical Ievel, between a sentential logic and the particular dass of models we associate with it, namely the dass of its full models. Traditionally logical matrices have been regarded as the most suitable notion of model in the algebraic studies of sentential logics; and indeed this notion gives sev eral completeness theorems and has generated an interesting mathematical theory. 148 pp. Englisch.

Apart from that it is mainly in the context of Homological Algebra that filtered rings and the… associated graded rings are being studied not in the least because of the importance of double complexes and their spectral sequences. Where non-commutative algebra is concerned, applications of the theory of filtrations were mainly restricted to the study of enveloping algebras of Lie algebras and, more extensively even, to the study of rings of differential operators. It is clear that the operation of completion at a filtration has an algebraic genotype but a topological fenotype and it is exactly the symbiosis of Algebra and Topology that works so well in the commutative case, e.g. ideles and adeles in number theory or the theory of local fields, Puisseux series etc, . . In Non commutative algebra the bridge between Algebra and Analysis is much more narrow and it seems that many analytic techniques of the non-commutative kind are still to be developed. Nevertheless there is the magnificent example of the analytic theory of rings of differential operators and 1J-modules a la Kashiwara-Shapira. 268 pp. Englisch.
