Although, in the past, the treatment recommendations, dose…regimen, substance selection and mode of administration were deduced principally from clinical trials, in recent years experimental research has yielded a mass of therapeutically significant new results. This seeks to optimize the clinical effects of the steroids and minimize their adverse events on a rational basis by the application of the knowledge obtained in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic models, taking into account the different types of protein binding and the intrinsic activity of the various glucocorticoids. However, the transfer of this type of `disease-adapted differential glucocorticoid treatment' into a clinical context involves a critical examination of the `received' notions that have characterized steroid treatment in the past, such as strictly circadian administration or time-related dose reduction, as well as proof of the clinical superiority of the new therapeutic approaches. This book, the proceedings of a workshop on Glucocorticoid Treatment held in Strasbourg, France, identifies the current status of existing therapeutic concepts in inflammatory bowel disease, presents the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions in connection with the specific pharmacological properties of steroids with reference to substance differences and different modes of administration, and demonstrates their therapeutic significance.

As most of you know, the name of the person of Dr. Smit Sibinga is unbreakably con nected with the annual symposium in Groningen which he has organized each year from the very start, 20 years ago. The reputation of any symposium depends heavily on the quality of the lectures. I think it is not possible to organize 20 symposia in a row if the topics lack actual relevance and the speakers are not of excellent reputation. Dr. Smit Sibinga has proven to have a keen eye for selecting interesting themes and eminent speakers. Although a lot of different topics have been dealt with in the past 20 years, which each attracted the attention of a different group in the field of blood transfusion, it is not surprising that after a tradition of 20 years several speakers but also a lot of attendees are not for the first time in Groningen to participate in this event. It gives the symposium a unique atmosphere of intimacy. It is not hard to admit that most of the newer developments in transfusion medicine take place outside the Netherlands.

The road… to gratification of this aspiration since then has been rather bumpy, however one wants to look at recent events. Indeed, since 1989 the relationship between the EU and the economies in transition has been ebbing and flowing with the evolution of two main strands of policy stances in the EU. One has been deep skepticism about bringing these countries into the Union at all in any foreseeable future. This in spite of the fact that, after long hesitation, in mid 1993 the EU Member States committed themselves eventually to explore accession with selected transition economies, as well as Cyprus and Malta. The other has been their evolving attitude toward their own integration endeavors. Hence the dilemmas, in the EU's parlance, of the 'deepening versus widening' conundrum. That indeed constitutes the paramount issue addressed in the present investigation.

Neuware - The contents of this volume reflect to a large extent the efforts made by a group of Institutes at the ETH Zürich to develop new techniques for measurements of flows in fluids in the last decade. The motivation came from the study of tr~sport and mixing processes in natural and industrial systems.… One of the characteristic properties of turbulence is its high mixing efficiency. The techniques developed are therefore suitable, although not exclusively, for turbulence measurements. They can be subdivided into point-measurements and field-measurements. The aim of the point-measurements developed is to determine the three components of the velocity and all their first derivatives with good temporal resolution and accuracy in turbulent flows. The old and weIl established method of hot-wire anemometry was used for this purpose. One of the main achievements in this context is the construction of miniature multi-wire probes. This technique was introduced to the Institute of Hydromechanics and Water Resources Management of ETH Zürich by Profs. A. Tsinober and E. Kit from Tel-Aviv University. This was made possible by the generous financial support by ETH, for which I would like to express my gratitude on this occasion. In addition, Dr. F.E. Joergensen from DANTEC contributed an example of recent developments in the hardware ofConstant Temperature Anemometry (CTA), for which I am very thankful.

The main distinctive feature of our approachlies in the mathematical objects used as models of a sententiallogic: We use abstract logics, while the dassical approaches use logical matrices. Using models with more structure allows us to reflect in them the metalogical properties of the sentential logic. Since an abstract logic can be viewed as a 'bundle' or family of matrices, one might think that the new models are essentially equivalent to the old ones; but we believe, after an overall appreciation of the work done in this area, that it is precisely the treatment of an abstract logic as a single object that gives rise to a useful -and beautiful- mathematical theory, able to explain the connections, not only at the logical Ievel but at the metalogical Ievel, between a sentential logic and the particular dass of models we associate with it, namely the dass of its full models.
