We leave it to a cadre of technologists to take the schematics and parts lists and to develop the processes that tum the designers' concepts into physical reality. And while the silicon transistor is shrinking, the engineering challenges of packaging multiple chips and associated components into increasingly dense subsystems are growing. Further, the transistor may have to function without failure through severe industrial or military environments over the lifetime of the product.

The extent to which regulatory reform has encouraged product market competition may not necessarily result in the same degree of competition across industries. Regulatory Reform and Labor Markets debates the notion that research on regulatory reform and labor markets should develop within the framework of the competitive model. This is achieved by presenting diverging views on wage and employment determination in distinctly different deregulated industries.

Much of that work has taken place within the context of QOS support for distributed multimedia systems, operating systems, transport sub…systems, networks, devices and formal languages. The objective of the Fifth International Workshop on Quality of Service (IWQOS) is to bring together researchers, developers and practitioners working in all facets of QOS research. While many workshops and conferences offer technical sessions on the topic QOS, none other than IWQOS, provide a single-track workshop dedicated to QOS research. The theme of IWQOS'97 is building QOS into distributed systems. Implicit in that theme is the notion that the QOS community should now focus on discussing results from actual implementations of their work. As QOS research moves from theory to practice, we are interested in gauging the impact of ideas discussed at previous workshops on development of actual systems. While we are interested in experimental results, IWQOS remains a forum for fresh and innovative ideas emerging in the field. As a result of this, authors were solicited to provide experimental research (long) papers and more speculative position (short) statements for consideration. We think we have a great invited and technical program lined up for you this year. The program reflects the Program Committees desire to hear about experiment results, controversial QOS subjects and retrospectives on where we are and where we are going.

The phrase tumour-like is applied to lesions which resemble neo plasms, clinically or morphologically, but do not behave biologi cally in a neoplastic manner. They are included in this classifica tion because they give rise to problems in differential diagnosis and because of the unclear borderline between neoplasms and certain non-neoplastic lesions. Synonyms are listed only if they have been used widely, or if they are considered to be helpful to the understanding of the lesion. In such cases, the preferred term is given first, followed by the synonym. Although the emphasis of this classification is on histological typing, in the examination of kidney tumours, consideration should be given to the degree of cellular anaplasia, the extent of local spread, vascular and lymphatic invasion, and the occur rence of metastasis. The scheme of histological grading suggested here is as fol lows: Grade I applies to the tumours that have the least degree of cellular anaplasia compatible with a diagnosis of malignancy; . grade II! applies to tumours with the most severe degrees of cel lular anaplasia; and grade I! applies to those tumours in be tween. Thus, it is no wonder that her book is excep tional, presenting the physiology, the pathophysiology, and a technical description of recommended exercises and their clinical application - and not as general recommendations but with con vincing examples. All three of the sections are written in clear, understandable language. The author discusses the use of the Swiss ball; however, she did not limit herself to a technical description. Instead she set out to discover the underlying physiological mechanisms and has succeeded in showing how a knowledgable physiotherapist can contribute to the development of physiotherapy as a science. Though based on the concept of S. Klein-Vogelbach, Beate Carriere has added so many of her own exercises, descriptions, and explanations that we are justified in speaking about the Carriere concept of using the Swiss ball. What I appreciate in particular is her critical view and attempt to see the patient and his problems from all possible aspects.
