Throughout the history of Western medicine, morality's explanations have been con sistently ambiguous. Pla.o held that the physician must cultivate the art of getting paid as well as the art of healing, for even if the goal of medicine is healing and not making money, the self-interest of the craftsman is satisfied thereby [4]. Centuries later, a medieval medical moralist, Henri de Mandeville, said: 'The chief object of the patient . is to get cured . the object of the surgeon, on the other hand, is to obtain his money . ([5], p. 16). This incompatibility, while general, is not universal. Throughout history, medical practitioners have resolved the problem - either in conscience or to their satisfaction. Some physicians have been so reluctant to make a profit from the ills of those whom they treated that they preferred to live in poverty. Samuel Johnson described his friend, Dr. Robert Levet, a Practiser of Physic: No summons mock'd by chill delay, No petty gain disdain'd by pride; The modest wants of ev'ry day The toil of ev'ry day supplied [3].

These methods have provided new insights into human microvascular function in health and disease. At the same time there has been a steady growth of new indirect techniques based on a w ide range of physical principles that reflect some or other aspect of microvascular function.

Neuware - During the 25 years since acute coronary care was focused into Coronary Care Units there have been three major Phases: I. prevention of death caused by arrhythmias; II. prevention of death due to myocardial failure; and III. limitation of infarct size. In the latter two Phases, there has been infr…ingement upon the time honored concept of a prolonged period of rest for the patient in general and the heart in particular to minimize myocardial metabolic demands. During the second Phase of coronary care, patients with myocardial failure received aggressive measures to increase cardiac work via increase in preload, decrease in afterload, and direct increase in inotropy. It was believed that true cardiogenic shock was so irreversible that it should be prevented by vigorous efforts to improve the cardiac output despite the risk of extending the area of ischemic myocardium. However, Phase II produced minimal overall reduction in mortality. In the initial part of Phase III, myocardial infarct (MI) size limitation was attempted by reducing myocardial metabolic demands via either beta adrenergic or calcium channel blocking agents. We are currently several years into the second part of Phase III of coronary care where the principle means of limiting MI size is restoration of coronary blood flow.

For the oncologist, the clinical evaluation of antitumor therapy is both part of the day-to-day management of specific patients and the critical considera tion of developing therapeutic alternatives. For physicians in other fields of medicine it is important to acquaint themselves with the basic tools of the oncologist. For people without medical training, including patients who might be interested in treatment research, many of the chapters may be overly technical.

Most of them happened to be related to the social or behavioral sciences. All were originally answers to questions posed by specialists in the respective applied fields. Here I give a somewhat extended version of these lectures, with more recent results and applications included. As previous knowledge just the basic facts of calculus and algebra are supposed. During this period, molecular embryology has made great strides forward, but without undergoing a major revolution; th…ere fore, the general philosophy and outline of the book have remained almost un changed. However, all the chapters had to be almost completely rewritten in or der to introduce new facts and to eliminate findings which have lost interest or have been disproved. There was a major gap in the first edition of this book: very little was said about mammalian eggs despite their obvious interest for mankind. Research on mammalian eggs and embryos is so active today that this important topic deserves a full chapter in a book concerned with molecular embryology. Therefore, I am very thankful to my colleague Dr. Henri Alexandre, who has written a chapter on mammalian embryology (Chap. 9) and has prepared all the illustrations for this book. 244 pp. Englisch.

The present book is being published posthumously with the careful assistance of Kenneth Meyer, one of the students of Professor LaSalle. It is appropriate that the last…publi cation of Professor LaSalle should be on a subject which con tains many interesting ideas, is very useful in applications and can be understood at an undergraduate level. In addition to making many significant contributions at the research level to differential equations and control theory, he was an excel lent teacher and had the ability to make sophisticated con cepts appear to be very elementary. Two examples of this are his books with N. Hasser and J. Sullivan on analysis published by Ginn and Co. , 1949 and 1964, and the book with S. It is an outgrowth of a course of lectures and tutorials (problem solv…ing sessions) which the author has given for a number of years at the University of New South Wales and elsewhere. The course is normally taught at the rate of 1i hours per week throughout an academic year (28 weeks). It has occasionally been given at double this rate over half the year, but it was found that students had insufficient time to absorb the material and experiment with the methods. The material presented here is rather more than has been taught in anyone year, although all of it has been taught at some time. The book is concerned with the application of numerical methods to the solution of equations - algebraic, transcendental and differential - which will be encountered by students during their training and their careers. The theoretical foundation for the methods is not rigorously covered. Engineers and applied scientists (but not, of course, mathematicians) are more con cerned with using methods than with proving that they can be used. However, they 'must be satisfied that the methods are fit to be used, and it is hoped that students will perform sufficient numerical experiments to con vince themselves of this without the need for more than the minimum of theory which is presented here. 304 pp. Englisch.

These self-referent behaviors are social in nature in the sense tha…t in large measure, they are the outcomes of pervasive social processes and are themselves major influences on social outcomes. As such, self-referent behaviors have the potential to be sig nificant organizing constructs in the study of the broader field of social psychology. In any case, they are regarded here as of intrinsic interest and are the focus of this volume. Four broad categories of self-referent behaviors are considered with regard to their social bases and conse quences as these are revealed in the social psychological and sociological literature. With appropriate discriminations made within each group ing, the four categories are: self-conceiving, self-evaluating, self-feeling, and self-protective-self-enhancing responses. Following a consideration of the social antecedents and consequences of each category of self referent behaviors, I present a final summary statement that outlines a theoretical model of the additive and interactive social influences on and consequences of the mutually influential self-referent behaviors. The outline of the theoretical model reflects my synthesis of the apparently relevant theoretical and empirical literature and is intended to function as a framework for the orderly incorporation of new theoretical asser tions and more or less apparently relevant empirical associations. 224 pp. Englisch.

Since dark matter appears to make up ~ 90 % of the mass of the Universe. it presents us with one of the most fundamental problems in astrophysics. IAU Symposium 117 on Dark Matter in the Universe was held on June 24 - 28. 1985. Our hosts were Princeton University and the Institute for Advanced Study. which together form one of the most active centers of work on the dark matter problem. Zwicky pointed out that the Coma Cluster could be in equilibrium at the large observed velocity dispersion only if a great deal of unseen matter were present.
