This common structure can be exploited in the search for particular proofs. A proof plan has two complementary components: a proof method and a proof tactic. By prescribing the structur…e of a proof at the level of primitive inferences, a tactic [11] provides the guarantee part of the proof. In contrast, a method provides a more declarative explanation of the proof by means of preconditions. Each method has associated effects. The execution of the effects simulates the application of the corresponding tactic. Theorem proving in the proof planning framework is a two-phase process: 1. Tactic construction is by a process of method composition: Given a goal, an applicable method is selected. The applicability of a method is determined by evaluating the method's preconditions. The method effects are then used to calculate subgoals. This process is applied recursively until no more subgoals remain. Because of the one-to-one correspondence between methods and tactics, the output from this process is a composite tactic tailored to the given goal. 2. Tactic execution generates a proof in the object-level logic. Note that no search is involved in the execution of the tactic. All the search is taken care of during the planning process. The real benefits of having separate planning and execution phases become appar ent when a proof attempt fails.

These include topics dealing with information theoretic aspects, channel modeling, diversity, interference control, resource allocation, power control, packet multi-access, stochastic modeling of mobility and traffic, and wireless network control. The selected topics in this workshop and their presented set of solutions reflect the richness of the problems in wireless communications. Indeed, development of theoretical frameworks with considerable attention to the peculiar environment of wireless communications has been the prime objective of this workshop. To elaborate, consider the problem of multi-access methods which remains a challenge for researchers. A complete evaluation of an access scheme must consider different aspects such as propagation, interference, mobility and traffic modeling. Some common bases, paradigms and models are needed. For example, today, we do not have a common archetype like the A WGN channel as in classical statistical communication. Clearly, there is a need for justified assumptions and models.

Old-fashioned forward contracts have surrendered mark…et share to currency swaps and options as well as to their perpetually multiplying derivatives. Interestingly, forex derivatives now provide a low cost and highly efficient method of transferring risk from the firms that are exposed to risk but which would rather not be (i. e. , risk-hedgers) to those which are not exposed but which-in exchange for a fee-would assume some exposure to risk (i. e. , risk bearers). Perhaps more importantly, foreign exchange risk management, which was once a fairly mechanical task confmed to the international treasury function, is now permeating global strategic management. Indeed, since the demise of the Bretton Woods system of pegged exchange rates, the cost of forex hedging instruments has fallen so dramatically that firms can readily avail themselves of hedging products which can reduce unwanted risk, thereby potentially gaining a competitive advantage over rivals that do not. Management and Control of Foreign Exchange Risk has grown out of a fundamental revision of my earlier work published almost 20 years ago. In the process, my thinking about risk and its mathematics has greatly benefitted from my association with John Cozzolino and Charles Tapiero.

These developments are highlighted in the first two sections of this book. The large number of recent results, ground-based and space-based, and the lack of a generally accepted dynamo theory with predictive power for the stars and the Sun, result in an ever-growing complexity of interpretation of individual results. The IAU Symposium 176 on `Stellar Surface Structure' consequently focused on spatially resolved stellar observations throughout the H-R diagram, from O- and B-stars to late M-stars. Two further sections in this book summarize the current observational data on surface inhomogeneities in stellar photospheres, chromospheres, and coronae. Finally, a special section is devoted to next generation model atmospheres.

However, its rich theoretical framework, algorithmic efficiency, easy implementability on special hardware, and suitability for many shape- oriented problems have propelled its widespread diffusion and adoption by many academic and industry groups in many countries as one among the dominant image analysis methodologies. The purpose of Mathematical Morphology and its Applications to Image and Signal Processing is to provide the image analysis community with a sampling from the current developments in the theoretical (deterministic and stochastic) and computational aspects of MM and its applications to image and signal processing. Many studies have been con ducted with the aim of discovering the general mechanisms which produce and maintain the ECM in tissues. Wound re p…air in animals has always been a suitable 'tool' for exploring these mechanisms. In such a pathologic event, the different components of the healing system can be readily observed since they are exaggerated. It has now become clear that the regulation of protease/inhibitor activity is one of the most im portant steps in maintaining the integrity of ECM in the normal as well as in the pathologic state. As far as the repair process is concerned, a failure in such regulation may result in abnormal wound healing ranging from nonhealing wounds to hyper trophic scarring. Experimental findings have been directly applied in clinical practice. For example, the importance of debridement in nor mal and especially in poorly healing wounds has become much clearer in the recent past. Different methods have been proposed to obtain an optimal wound bed in order to perform skin transplantation. Both mechanical and physical debridement procedures un doubtedly offer some advantages and are essential when extensive third degree burns have to be treated. On the other hand, pain, excessive blood loss, and overall broad and indi scriminate debridement are common negative side effects. Thus, many enzymic formulations have been proposed and used in practice by clinicians all over the world. 128 pp. Englisch.
