For one thing, the day came and went well before the work was complete. For another, the project wasn't quite a surprise: Plantinga caught wind of it (though… not of its details) before the unveiling. The occasion was marked, however, by a presentation of a projected table of contents and an early draft of the cover painting by Keith Lehrer. Plantinga then saw the details, and was quite taken aback that the editors and a few contributors had come to South Bend from as far Virginia, Florida, and California to celebrate. Now we are pleased to offer the essays themselves. The collection ranges widely over metaphysics and epistemology. Its wingspan testifies to the breadth both of Plantinga's own work and of the audience that has valued it. Some of the essays deal with ontology, examining actualism, presentism, antirealism, properties, and artifacts. Several essays in epistemology raise skeptical questions, work through the implications of naturalism or int- nalism, and engage Plantinga's own Reidian account of warrant. Other contributions consider the bearing of philosophical ideas on the Christian faith-of split brain cases on the doctrine of the Trinity, for example, and of materialism on the afterlife. The contributors are friends, colleagues, and former students of Plantinga. The editors thank all of them for their eager participation in this project.

It proposes the legal and social relationship model as an analytical tool for identifying the rights and obligations of recordkeeping participants in networked 'business' transactions within communities of common interest based on trust. The model is also used to examine the legal concepts of property, access, privacy and evidence, with particular reference to its Internet context. As legal relationships have their basis in the law of obligations found in both common and civil law systems, as well as archival science, the model has a broad-based application. The approach in this book has been to reconcile a number of archival traditions - the common strands rather than the differences, in particular concepts of identity, trust, acts, actors, and social relationships - as fundamental concepts to social regulation. It is therefore primarily directed to archives and records academics and practitioners (especially those working within the realm of electronic records), in order to provide them with a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of the legal and ethical dimensions of records created in distributed environments.

More recent work, including the field survey report of the Tokachi-oki earthquake tsunami of September 26, 2003, is also included. Synolakis and Okall summarize the survey results of International Tsunami Survey Teams, as well as seismological and numerical modelling studies of 15 tsunami events occurred between 1992 and 2002. In this active decade of tsunami disasters, the tsunami community has learned how to organize ITST, describe, document and share the results of surveys. The authors also propose a method to discriminate the seismic tsunamis from landslide tsunamis based on the observed runup heights, and demonstrate it for the recent tsunamis. Power et al. report the tsunamis generated by the 2003 Fiordland, New Zealand, earthquake (M 7. 2). This earthquake generated two kinds of tsunamis; a local large (4-5 m) tsunami generated by rockslide in a sound, and a smaller tsunami generated by earthquake fa aulting and detected on tide gauges in Australia. Three papers discuss volcanic tsunamis in the western Pacific region. Nishimura et al. report the tsunami from the 1994 eruption of Rabaul volcanoes.

Almost all physical systems are nonlinear and the success of linear control techniques depends on the extent of the nonlinear system behaviour and the careful attention given to switching linear controllers through the range of nonlinear system operations. In many industrial and process-control applications, good engineering practice, linear control systems and classical PID control can give satisfactory performance because the process nonlinearity is mild and the control system performance specification is not particularly demanding; however, there are other industrial system applications where the requirement for high-performance control can only be achieved if nonlinear control design techniques are used. Thus, in some industrial and technological domains there is a strong justification for more applications of nonlinear methods. One prevailing difficulty with nonlinear control methods is that they are not so easily understood nor are they easy to reduce to formulaic algorithms for routine application.
