Marcuse's philosophy could be equated with anti-authoritarianism. His…anti-establishment theses cut deeply into the roots of every contemporary institutional structure, whether it be the giant military governmental complex, the family, the universities, or simply the 'status quo. ' His Critical Philosophy has apparent roots in the Frankfurt School of Social Research and in the early Marxist revisionists like Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Kautsky, all of which In fact, the main point of philosophical thinking is anti-authoritarian. Feuerbach'sEssenceo/Christianity is an attempt to demythologize all authoritarian structures by centering the attack against the belief in a real God and in the institutionalized structures that defend such a belief. Furthermore, ethicians and political scientists over the centuries have been vague in their treatment of the notion of authority. The old scholastic textbooks referred to authority as the 'form' of society; the newer ones omitted the point altogether. Even Professor Carl J. Fried rich's volume in the 'Nomos' series (I958) entitled 'Authority' did not venture further back with any depth beyond the post-Reformation era. The 'Syntopicon', a nugget of philosophical concepts in the tra dition of the West, has no special topic on 'authority. ' This is strange in the light of what has happened. 136 pp. Englisch.

It is hoped that it will prove a useful guide to anyo…ne trying to come to grips with, and gain a perspective of Plato's mature thought. At the same time my study is addressed to the specialist, and I have considered at the appropriate places a good deal of the scholarly literature that has appeared during the last thirty years. In this connection I regret that some of the pub lications which came to my notice after my work was substantially completed (such as KamIah's and Sayre's) have not been referred to in my discussion. As few philosophy students nowadays are familiar with Greek I have (except in a few footnotes) translated as well as transliterated all Greek terms. Citations from Plato's text follow Cornford's admirable trans lation as closely as possible, though the reader will find some significant deviations. The most notable of these concerns the key word on which I have rendered throughout as 'being,' thus avoiding Cornford's 'existence' and 'reality' which tend to prejudge the issues which the dialogue raises. 132 pp. Englisch.

This fact was recognized from the outset of the International Biological Programme, when photosynthesis was selected as one of the principal problems to be concentrated on. The significance of the IBP in initiating a broader-based ap proach and worldwide collaboration need not be emphasized here; it is merely ne cessary to consider the rapid increase in the number of papers on photosynthesis since its inception. It is of fundamental importance for scientists working on photosynthesis to get information on what has been done in recent years in this discipl ine. Thus as complete as possible a bibl iography is badly needed. The complexity of this pro blem requires also that the progress of ecology, chemistry and physics, as far as they concern photosynthesis, be fol lowed. In the first part I make an attempt to outline an objective theory of inductive behaviour, on the basis of R. A. Fisher's statistical inference philosophy, on the one hand, and R. Carnap's inductive logic, on the other. A special problem arising in the context of the new theory, viz., the problem of vagueness of concepts (in particular in the social sciences) is treated separately by H. Skala and myself. B. Leiner has contributed some biographical and bibliographical notes on the objective theory of inductive behaviour. Part II is concerned with inference philosophy. D. A. S. Fraser, the founder of structural inference theory, characterizes and compares some inference philosophies, and discusses his own and the arguments of the critics of his structural theory. In my opinion, Fraser's structural infer ence theory is suited to complete Fisher's inference philosophy in some essential points, if not to replace it. His medical education started in 1927 at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm During his study he worked parttime in the department of physiology. KARPE served a…s a resident in the ophthalmological department of Serafiner lasarettet from 1937 till 1941. That year, the university eye clinic was transferred to the newly built Karolinska Sjukhuset, where KARPE became assistant-head of the out-patient department, and lecturer in ophthalmology. In 1949 he was appoin ted professor in ophthalmology at the Karolinska Institute and head of the department of ophthalmology at Karolinska Sjukhuset. KARPE received his doctor degree in 1945 upon completion of his thesis: 'The basis of clinical electroretinography'. This original work opened up a completely new field of clinical investigation. Soon Swedish and foreign pupils flocked into his department to study his new method, a technique at present accepted as an indispensable tool in ophthalmic practice. One of the striking feat…ures of this degeneration process was the appearance at an early stage of micro glial cells completely covered by myelin, which apparently participated in phago cytosis of degenerating axoplasm and to a small extent of their own myelin covering. Evidence was obtained indicating that the numerous degenerating glial cells seen somewhat later in the degeneration process were derived from these myelin-covered microglial cells. Since glial cells of the type described in the previous study have never been implicated in the process of direct Wallerian degeneration, the possibility exists that they may in fact be characteristic for indirect Wallerian degeneration. However, this possibility cannot be adequately assessed unless our present rather scanty knowledge concerning the early glial reaction during direct Wallerian degeneration is extended. Therefore the present study has been undertaken to examine the ultrastructural changes during direct W allerian degeneration in the kitten, with particular reference to the possible occurrence of myelin-covered microglial cells and degenerating glial cells of the type described in the previous study (see Part I). Since no systematic ultra structural study on direct Wallerian degeneration in immature animals seem to exist, observations on changes in the myelinated nerve fibres and the different types of glial cells have been included. 84 pp. Englisch.

At the same time my study is addressed to the specialist, and I have considered at the appropriate places a good deal of the scholarly literature that has appeared during the last thirty years. In this connection I regret that some of the pub lications which came to my notice after my work was substantially completed (such as KamIah's and Sayre's) have not been referred to in my discussion. As few philosophy students nowadays are familiar with Greek I have (except in a few footnotes) translated as well as transliterated all Greek terms. Citations from Plato's text follow Cornford's admirable trans lation as closely as possible, though the reader will find some significant deviations. Fried rich's volume in the 'Nomos' series (I958) entitled 'Authority' did not venture further back with any depth beyond the post-Reformation era. The 'Syntopicon', a nugget of philosophical concepts in the tra dition of the West, has no special topic on 'authority. Neuware -In the previous study (Part I) a description was given of the ultrastructural changes occurring during indirect Wallerian degeneration in the intramedullary root fibre region of the kitten hypoglossal nerve. One of the striking features… of this degeneration process was the appearance at an early stage of micro glial cells completely covered by myelin, which apparently participated in phago cytosis of degenerating axoplasm and to a small extent of their own myelin covering. Evidence was obtained indicating that the numerous degenerating glial cells seen somewhat later in the degeneration process were derived from these myelin-covered microglial cells. Since glial cells of the type described in the previous study have never been implicated in the process of direct Wallerian degeneration, the possibility exists that they may in fact be characteristic for indirect Wallerian degeneration. However, this possibility cannot be adequately assessed unless our present rather scanty knowledge concerning the early glial reaction during direct Wallerian degeneration is extended. Therefore the present study has been undertaken to examine the ultrastructural changes during direct W allerian degeneration in the kitten, with particular reference to the possible occurrence of myelin-covered microglial cells and degenerating glial cells of the type described in the previous study (see Part I). Since no systematic ultra structural study on direct Wallerian degeneration in immature animals seem to exist, observations on changes in the myelinated nerve fibres and the different types of glial cells have been included.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 84 pp. Englisch.

His medical education started in 1927 at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm During his study he worked parttime in the department of physiology. That year, the university eye clinic was transferred to the newly built Karolinska Sjukhuset, where KARPE became assistant-head of the out-patient department, and lecturer in ophthalmology. In 1949 he was appoin ted professor in ophthalmology at the Karolinska Institute and head of the department of ophthalmology at Karolinska Sjukhuset. KARPE received his doctor degree in 1945 upon completion of his thesis: 'The basis of clinical electroretinography'. This original work opened up a completely new field of clinical investigation. Soon Swedish and foreign pupils flocked into his department to study his new method, a technique at present accepted as an indispensable tool in ophthalmic practice. The basic thesis is that science is global, but that its practical application is restricted to specific biological and socio economic habitats. The region covered is termed the intertropical zone. This comprises the equatorial latitudes, the tropics and subtropics. It is not only that part of the globe lying between latitudes 30° north and south of the Equator, as proposed by some writers (DAVIES, W., 1960; repeated by DAVIES & SKIDMORE, 1966). Rather is it those regions of the world in which, at the lower elevations, certain families and members of the Gramineae and Leguminosae grow wild or can be cultivated.
