Neuware - This essay contains material which will hopefully be of interest not only to philosophers, but also to those social scientists whose research concerns the analysis of communication, verbal or non-verbal. Although most of the topics taken up here are central to issues in the philosophy of language,… they are, in my opinion, indistinguishable from topics in descriptive social psychology. The essay aims to provide a conceptual framework within which various key aspects of communication can be described, and it presents a formal language, using techniques from modern modal logic, in which such descriptions can themselves be formulated. It is my hope that this framework, or parts of it, might also turn out to be of value in future empirical work. There are, therefore, essentially two sides to this essay: the development of a framework of concepts, and the construction of a formal language rich enough to express the elements of which that framework is composed. The first of these two takes its point of departure in the statement quoted from Lewis (1972) on the page preceding this introduction. The distinction drawn there by Lewis is accepted as a working hypothesis, and in one sense this essay may be seen as an attempt to explore some of the consequences of that hypothesis.

The next two chapters, grouped under the heading The Allies and the Holocaust, deal with the failure of the Western Allies to respond to the desperate needs of the persecuted Jews of Europe during the Second World War. The first is by Professor Bela Vago, an authority on the Holocaust and East Central European history at the University of Haifa.

In particular, linear models are closely analyzed since they are fully justifiable as an investigative tool in tracer experiments. The objective of th…e monograph is to bring the reader up to date on some of the current mathematical prob lems of interest in compartmental analysis. This is accomplished by reviewing mathematical developments in the literature, especially over the last 10-15 years, and by presenting some new thoughts and directions for future mathematical research. These notes started as a series of lectures that I gave while visiting with the Division of Applied ~1athematics, Brown University, 1979, and have developed in to this collection of articles aimed at the reader with a beginning graduate level background in mathematics. The text can be used as a self-paced reading course. With this in mind, exercises have been appropriately placed throughout the notes. As an aid in reading the material, the e~d of a proof is indicated by ~. Sub section titles are utilized to make it easier for the reader to skim over detailed material on a first reading and make the entire manuscript somewhat more accessible, especially to nonmathematicians in the biosciences. This kind of basic study is essential for our understanding of quadruped and human motion and has been discussed by Pauwels (1948,1955, 1960) and Kummer (1956, 1959, 1962, 1978). Biomechanical analysis of human upper and lower limb joints has resulted in causal therapy in cases of joint disease (Pauwels 1935, 1961, 1976; Maquet 1976). Studies of the functional strain on the shoulder joint socket and the elbow joint have been carried out by Pauwels (1955, 1959, 1963) and Tillmann (1971, 1978). Joints of the human hand and wrist have been discussed from a phylogenetic, onto genetic, anatomic-descriptive, and clinical point of view (Thilenius 1895; Corner 1898; Zrubecky 1960; Lewis 1970; Blauth and Schneider-Sickert 1976; et al.), but so far no studies of these joints have been undertaken with a view to investigating the functional connection between morphology and specific strain. This study aims to establish the relationship between the form and the normal or disturbed functioning of three important joints of the human hand: the proximal wrist joint, the saddle joint of the thumb, and the metacarpophalangeal joints, and to evaluate the findings biomechanically and clinically. 96 pp. Englisch.

This gr…owth is due largely to increased involvement in designing various types of earth structures for the resources industries (slopes, impoundment structures, offshore islands, mine backfills), to the development of increas ingly large hydroelectric projects, to the need for more freshwater storage and diversion schemes, and to the need for transportation, communications and other facilities in areas where the natural earth materials are occasionally subject to mass instabilities. Although geotechnical engineering transects traditional disciplinary boundaries of civil, geological and mining engineering, the majority of geotechnical engineers are graduates from civil engineering schools. Here the geotechnical instruction has been concentrated on soil mechanics and foundation engineering because foundation engineering has traditionally been the major component of geotechnical practice. Geotechnical special ists, however, generally have acquired considerable formal or informal training beyond their first engineering degree, and an advanced degree with considerable cross-discipline course content is still considered an advantage for a young engineer entering a career in geotechnical engineering. Practical job experience is, of course, a necessary part of professional development but is readily interpreted and assimilated only if the required background training has been obtained. 280 pp. Englisch.
