The former is commonly called Ideen III. Between these two parts of the whole stands a third: Phenomeno 3 logical Investigations of Constitution, generally known as Ideen II. In this introduction the Roman numeral designations will be used, as well as the abbreviation PFS for the translation at hand. In many translation projects there is an initial problem of establish ing the text to be translated. That problem confronts translators of the books of Husserl's Ideas in different ways. The Ideas was written in 1912, during Husserl's years in Gottingen (1901-1916). Books I and II were extensively revised over nearly two decades and the changes were incorporated by the editors into the texts of the Husserliana editions of 1950 and 1952 respectively. Manuscripts of the various reworkings of the texts are preserved in the Husserl Archives, but for those unable to work there the only one directly available for Ideen II is the reconstructed one.

The knowledge of the electronic structure and the properties of atoms and molecules i…s the basis for an un derstanding of their interactions in the elementary act of any chemical process. The increasing information in this field during the last decades has stimulated the elaboration of the methods for evaluating the potential energy of the reacting systems as well as the creation of new methods for calculation of reaction probabili ties (or cross sections) and rate constants. An exact solution to these fundamental problems of theoretical chemistry based on quan tum mechanics and statistical physics, however, is still impossible even for the simplest chemical reactions. Therefore,different ap proximations have to be used in order to simplify one or the other side of the problem. At present, the basic approach in the theory of chemical reactivity consists in separating the motions of electrons and nu clei by making use of the Born-Oppenheimer adiabatic approximation to obtain electronic energy as an effective potential for nuclear motion. If the potential energy surface is known, one can calculate, in principle, the reaction probability for any given initial state of the system. The reaction rate is then obtained as an average of the reaction probabilities over all possible initial states of the reacting ~artic1es. Now that its Program has been completed, it was decided to present the results of that p…art of the activities of the WG3 indicated in the symposium title. The writer was asked by the WG3 to coordinate the contributions. The European Geophysical Society (EGS) kindly offered to host the symposium during its meeting in Vienna in September, 1979, and Springer-Verlag in Vienna agreed to publish a 'Proceedings' volume of the Symposium. These efforts are gratefully acknowledged. The whole subject matter of the symposium was divided into 6 'themes'. The first concerns in situ stress determinations, the second deals with stresses as inferred from fault-plane solutions of earthquakes, the third geomorphic and geological effects of stresses, the fourth petrofabrics and stresses, the fifth recent displacements and the sixth geomechanical models. Upon the recommendation of the WG3, contributors were invited to present papers falling under the themes mentioned. The symposium, how ever, was also open to unsolicited contributors in the general call for papers for the EGS-meeting. It is hoped that the papers will present a fairly complete picture of the results obtained in the study of tectonic stresses in the Alpine-Mediterranean region during the ten years of the duration of the International Geodynamics Program. 264 pp. Englisch.

They introduce the main ideas of his later pheno menology, the one that goes beyond the phenomenology of the Logische Untersuchungen. These lectures and Husserl's summary of them entitled 'The Train of Thoughts in the Lectures' were edited by Dr. Walter Biemel and first published in 1950 under the 1 title Die Idee der Phiinomenologie. Husserl wrote the summary on the night of the last lecture, not for formal delivery but for his own use. This accounts for the fact that the summary contains incomplete sentences. There are some discrepancies between Lecture V and the corresponding passages in the summary. Because of well-known dif ficulties in system with more than about 50 electrons, the adopted ap proximations are generally rather crude. As examples of quantum chemical approximations we mention the total or partial neglects of electron correlation, the neglect of relativistic effects, the use of subminimal basis sets, the still present neglect of inner-core electrons in semi-empirical methods, the acceptance of the Born-Oppenheimer approximations, and so on. In general, the larger the system, in terms of the number of electrons, the cruder the approxima tion. In a way, the present status of quantum chemistry might appear as nearly paradoxical. Neuware -The idea of the present symposium was conceived a few years ago by the Working Group 3 (WG3) of the Interunion Commission of Geodynamics (ICG). Now that its Program has been completed, it was decided to present the results of that part…of the activities of the WG3 indicated in the symposium title. The writer was asked by the WG3 to coordinate the contributions. The European Geophysical Society (EGS) kindly offered to host the symposium during its meeting in Vienna in September, 1979, and Springer-Verlag in Vienna agreed to publish a 'Proceedings' volume of the Symposium. These efforts are gratefully acknowledged. The whole subject matter of the symposium was divided into 6 'themes'. The first concerns in situ stress determinations, the second deals with stresses as inferred from fault-plane solutions of earthquakes, the third geomorphic and geological effects of stresses, the fourth petrofabrics and stresses, the fifth recent displacements and the sixth geomechanical models. Upon the recommendation of the WG3, contributors were invited to present papers falling under the themes mentioned. The symposium, how ever, was also open to unsolicited contributors in the general call for papers for the EGS-meeting. The knowledge of the electronic structure and the properties of atoms and molecules is th…e basis for an un derstanding of their interactions in the elementary act of any chemical process. The increasing information in this field during the last decades has stimulated the elaboration of the methods for evaluating the potential energy of the reacting systems as well as the creation of new methods for calculation of reaction probabili ties (or cross sections) and rate constants. An exact solution to these fundamental problems of theoretical chemistry based on quan tum mechanics and statistical physics, however, is still impossible even for the simplest chemical reactions. Therefore,different ap proximations have to be used in order to simplify one or the other side of the problem. At present, the basic approach in the theory of chemical reactivity consists in separating the motions of electrons and nu clei by making use of the Born-Oppenheimer adiabatic approximation to obtain electronic energy as an effective potential for nuclear motion. If the potential energy surface is known, one can calculate, in principle, the reaction probability for any given initial state of the system. The reaction rate is then obtained as an average of the reaction probabilities over all possible initial states of the reacting ~artic1es.
