Bureaucracy, specialization, repetitive technology, and hierarchical control structures are criticized by politicians, trade unionists, and social scientists. They argue for improved quality of work, for work democratizat…ion, and for the humanization of work. This book evaluates Norwegian field ex periments in the area of job redesign which started already in 1964. Norway has therefore a lead in experience compared to most other countries, particu to the United States, where debates and subsequent experiments re larly volving around the quality of working life and the democratization of work started only in the early seventies. The Norwegian social scientists who left their academic bastions and started action research drew heavily upon the 'open socio-technical system' thinking as developed by the Tavistock Insti tute of Human Relations in London. This descriptive evaluation study ana lyzes the job redesign experiments from an industrial democracy perspective and places the experiments in their national political and labor relations contexts. Special emphasis is given to the actual and potential role trade unions can play in shopfloor job design projects. The industrial relations of the United States is generally used as reference point in this study. system The theory guiding the experiments regards work democratization through job redesign as a first step in a bottom-up process of organizational demo cratization.

The conference endeavored to bring together re searchers in a field where, paradoxically, the underlying phenomena s…tudied are increasingly coordinated and internationalized, yet the observers remain pre dominantly isolated. Only rarely do they resort to comparisons between coun tries, and still less frequently to an analysis from a transnational outlook. As the contributions to this collection demonstrate, it has become clearer and clearer that -whether or not as a result of a random process, or of technological conditions, or of deliberate enterprise strategy - the determinants of market structures and their changes as time passes, have created fundamentally similar effects in different countries, resulting in industrial structures of the same kind. Thus, the largest firms and plants are found in the same sectors, and the most concentrated industries are more or less the same from one country to the other. The studies of Prais, Reid, Jacquemin & Phlips and Linda likewise show that a broad trend toward concentration has been manifest.

The 'uncon ventionality' is present in the adoption of social psychological tools for the economic p…lanning of water system design in an arid environment. The theoretics of Chapter I provides the framework for the empirical analysis of the ensuing chapters. The language of that chapter is designed to be under standable to students in introductory regional science, economics or geography courses, as well as professionals in allied fields. The fresh approach of the empirical analysis should lift the field of urban water resources analysis into using a greater expanse of tools and methods for policy planning. In any case, it is signifying that straightforward engineer ing analysis in most cases may be made more effective by socio-economic studies as that carried out in Israel. Indeed the guidelines and specifications presented in this work are presently being used by Israeli planners. A number of individuals and institutions contributed greatly to this effort. Foremost, the authors would like to thank Tahal Consulting Engineers, Inc. , for funding the major part of this study. Ms. Suzy Ashkenazi of that organization aided in data analysis. It is interesting particularly because costs of children are often obscured, hence underestimated ('cheaper by the dozen'); more… enlightened considerations may have an impact on family planning and population policy at a micro and macro level of living, respectively. From a methodological point of view, the topic is intriguing since consumption by individual members of a family cannot be measured directly, but can only be inferred to in an indirect way. Consequently, attempts at solving the children's cost problem were as frequent and diversified as they have been unsatisfactory or unsuccessful. One (older) approach to establishing costs of consumption by children compared with (male) adults was based on physiological considerations, viz. with respect to calorie requirements, and of a normative rather than an empirical nature: an international (League of Nations) consumer equivalence scale as well as our national (Amsterdam) scale were the results of these efforts. Unfortunately, this physiological myopia grossly underrates (young) children's consumption: the calories they use up may be small in number, but they are high in price. Moreover, not only their bodies, but also their gradually developing minds need (reading and other) matter, involving costs. A fortiori, this applies to women, who - as the biologically stronger sex - have been deemed to need less calories than men, disregarding their mental and other needs (after all, it is all a matter of mind over matter). 192 pp. Englisch.

Belousov discovered that the oxidation of citric acid by bromate in the presence of cerium ions does not proceed to equilibrium methodically and uniformly, like most chemical reactions, but rather oscillates with clock…like precision between a yellow and colorless state. See Fig. 11. 1, p. 30. A. M. Zhabotinskii followed up on Belousov's original observation and in 1964 his first investigations appeared in the Russian journal Biofizika. Though H. Degn (in Copenhagen at the time) knew of Zhabotinskii's work and published his own account of the mechanism of oscillation in Nature (1967), this interesting reaction attracted little attention among Western scientists until 1968, when Zhabotinskii and his coworkers and Busse (from Braunschweig, W. Germany) reported on their work at an international conference on biological and biochemical oscillators held in Prague. Shortly thereafter appeared a flurry of papers on temporal oscillations and spatial patterns in this reaction system. Vavilin and Zhabotinskii (1969) [and later Kasperek and Bruice (1971)] studied the kinetics of the oxidation 3 of Ce+ by Br0 and the oxidation of organic species by Ce+4. Busse (1969) 3 reported his observation of colored bands of chemical activity propagating up and down in a long tube of unstirred solution. Zaikin and Zhabotinskii (1970) observed circular chemical waves in thin layers of solution. 140 pp. Englisch.

In pursu…ing this goal, we eschew all discussions of complex programming models, for example, and concentrate on, above all, interpretation of the transactions table itself, on such common tools as multipliers, impact analysis, projections models, and self-sufficiency analysis, and on a few innovations such as income-per-employee indices, development simulators, and market analysis routines. Our primary purpose has been to show how planners, both private and public, can use regional input-output analysis quickly and to their advantage. The Georgia Interindustry Study was sponsored by the Office of Planning and Budget and the Department of Industry and Trade of the State of Georgia; their support is gratefully acknowledged. In addition, there was interest in the problems of implementation of multiple-criteria methods, and the interface between theory and practice, Approximately 78 participants from 15 different countries attended the conference - both theorists and practitioners. A list of participants and their addresses is found on page 411 - Because of the relatively large number of papers presented, large morning sessions followed by smaller parallel afternoon sessions were employed'. In general a discussant commented on each paper. In addition, considerable time was reserved for small-group discussion and interaction. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The original papers which appear in this volume were initially presented in a series of sessions of the Ad Hoc Group on Alienation Theory and Research at the 1974 World Congress of Sociology in Toronto, Canada. This group was organi…zed by the editors as a result of their longstanding research and teaching interest in the field. The purpose of the Toronto sessions was to provide an international forum where scholars and researchers could come to gether for a personal exchange of ideas and research findings. To our know ledge this was the first forum of its kind concerned specifically with aliena tion theory and research. More than fifty theoretical and empirical papers from thirteen countries and several overlapping disciplines were organized into panels and workshops during the span of four days. The response to these sessions indicates that interest in the study of alienation by philosophers and social scientists continues unabated. The Toronto sessions were organized largely around a fundamental concern for further theoretical development and conceptual clarification in the alienation field. The papers selected for this volume reflect this thematic concern. Although many excellent empirical papers were presented, it was generally felt that meaningful empirical research would benefit from a continued elaboration and refinement of alienation theory. The present collection is consequently geared to problems of meaning, theory, and method. Considerable emphasis is also placed on a critical evaluation of the alienation theme as it has evolved from social philosophy to empirical social research. 336 pp. Englisch.

The course has been gradually modified over the years in accordance with changing outlook and with… the steadily increasing sophistication of the audience, third- and fourth-year honours classes in several universities in Australia and in Canada. Out of the conviction that no branch of Mathematics can be mastered by memorizing facts and methods I have tried from the beginning to make the subject interesting for the reader. Clearly one cannot hope to please everybody in this respect. I have sought, how ever, to attract the reader's interest by including a number of dis cussions and examples which either have interested me on occasion or resulted from questions of students; some sections and examples have been taken from work done by now eminent mathematicians in an early period of their career, assuming that such selections will appeal to younger readers. So J hope that this book will be found to be a reasonably modern, although not conventional, text proposing an amount of material most of which can be dealt with in a half-year's lecture course. After studying the book the reader should be able to tackle those problems in group theory which are scattered in the problem sections of the American Mathematical Monthly and other similar periodicals. 256 pp. Englisch.

Its basic theory is now well established, and many applications to problems in engineering h…ave been successfully made. In writing this book it has been my aim to give, in a relatively small volume, an up-to-date presentation of those parts of thermoelasticity which, in my opinion, are of basic importance in the field. The theoretical back ground, together with the corresponding methods of solution, is developed first in each chapter and is followed by 'carefully selected examples intended to serve not only as illustrations of the theory but also as sources for useful results of engineering interest. Following a brief introductory chapter, the linearized, uncoupled theory is presented. Frequent reference is made here to the theory of isothermal elas ticity. A short review of the theory of heat conduction is included. The third and fourth chapters are concerned with special cases: plane thermo elastic stress and strain, and thermal bending and buckling of plates, respec tively. The real function method and the complex function approach are introduced simultaneously in Chapter 3 in order to exhibit and delineate the respective merits of the two procedures. In Chapter 5 the theory of thermo elasticity is developed in its most general form. Several particular cases are considered. This chapter also provides a rigorous foundation for the linearized theory of the preceding chapters. 128 pp. Englisch.
