Th…e emergence of new stereotactic methodologies such as frameless stereotaxy and other forms of neuronavigation have become an indispensable tool for all types of neurosurgical operations. An increasing number of young neurosurgeons takes an interest in the neurosurgical approaches to the treatment of movement disorders, chronic pain and epilepsy. This is a clear sign ofthe growing awareness of the long neglected fact that these neurosurgical treatments can be offered to large patient populations. Neurotransplantation as a novel treatment of Parkinson's disease has paved the way for the application of this technology for other indications. The pioneering work performed by the late Edward Hitchcock is reviewed here. There is a renewed interest in pallidotomy for dealing with certain forms of Parkinson's disease and certain aspects of this operation are discussed in another paper. Progress in the neurosurgical treatment of pain is dealt with by contributions on refined techniques of percutaneous cordotomy, DREZ operations and critical evaluations of spinal cord stimulation. A novel approach is a report on the experiences of treating cancer pain by intraspinal implantation of chromaffin cells. Several contributions cover the important issues of novel techniques for the study of neural dysfunction, peroperative monitoring with PET, microrecording, magneto-encephalography and other techniques. 156 pp. Englisch.

The latter are divided into two- and three-center covalent chemical bonds, metallic bonds, and exchange-repulsion forces. This approach allows statements of principle and systematic analysis. However, quantitative predictions on concrete large systems are virtually impossible, and there are no general rules that account for structural and chemical changes due to intermolecular interactions. Chemists are therefore left with qualitative descriptions in which the changes in electron densities are considered. Such models as the MO theory or the resonance concept unrealistically assume that the nuclei remain in fixed positions. Further difficulties are encountered in the attempted description on the 'nature' of the chemical bond, e.g., the forces involved. In order to avoid these difficulties an extension of the donor-acceptor concept, characterized by the comparison between equilibrium structures in different molecular environments, will be presented in this book. In this way, changes in the positions of the nuclei can be taken into account and the question of the nature of the molecular forces is no longer important.

This influence can be measured using accelerometers and satellite tracking techniques.The opening chapters of this thesis provide an excellent introduction to the various disciplines that are involved in the interpretation of these observations: orbital mechanics, satellite aerodynamics and upper atmospheric physics. A subsequent chapter, at the heart of this work, covers advances in the algorithms used for processing satellite accelerometry and Two-Line Element (TLE) orbit data. Neuware -As part of its 'Programme for the prevention of health hazards caused by industrial substances', the Berufsge nossenschaft der chemischen Industrie (BG Chemie, Em ployment Accident Insurance Fund of the Chemical Indus try) began in 1977 to investigate the toxicity of those chemicals which ar…e widely used, have many different ap plications and are suspected of being dangerous to health, in particular of having long-term effects. The in vestigations consist of a literature search and - depending on the results - commissions of experimental studies. It is hoped by means of this testing to close gaps in our know ledge and to increase the scientific validity of the required risk assessments. The results of the toxicological in vestigations carried out by BG Chemie, and the resulting substance assessments have been published in German since 1987 in the form of 132 'Toxikologische Bewer tungen' ('Toxicological Evaluations') up to now. In order to make this useful information internation ally available, BG Chemie began in October 1990 to pub lish them as a book series in English, of which the sixth volume (containing 11 individual evaluations) is presented here. Therefore for 83 existing chemicals 'Toxicological Evaluations' are available in English at the moment, a fur ther 27 are in preparation and will be published soon.

For some scientists this will be most of what they need. However, they will be in a position to read and/or use the remaining chapters without undue difficulty.

The emphasis in this volume, the third of a continuing series, is focussed upon pattern recognition, pictorial information manipulation, and new approaches to logical design of information networks. In Chapter 1, V. A. Kovalevsky presents a tutorial survey of practical and theoretical developments in pattern recognition. He categorizes the basic developments in three different directions. The first direction is charac terized by an empirical treatment with highly specialized recognition schemes. In the second direction, the major efforts are centered upon the cre ation of learning systems capable of improving recognition performance on the basis of past experience. The majority of the work in the third direction is devoted to the study of the basic structure of complex patterns, the con struction of mathematical models for pattern recognition, and the analysis of complex pictorial representations. The author elucidates the 'heuristics' approach and the 'science' approach to pattern recognition problems. This chapter together with Chapter 2 of this volume supplements the chapter on Engineering Principles of Pattern Recognition in Volume 1 to provide a more complete treatment of this subject.

The impact of these stimuli on the decision-making proce-ss is broadly termed sensory evaluation. Advances in sensory evaluation research have been slow in the past be…cause of the human factor-the necessity to use highly trained sensory panels to conduct this research. High technology in- strumentation and new understandings of sensory evaluations are now combining to make possible quantum jumps forward in sensory eval- uation research. It is widely recognized that the sensory aspects of fruits and vegeta- bles are affected by many factors, among them environment, variety, cultural practices, and handling practices. However, if one attempts to find a general reference or compilation of findings regarding this sub- ject area there seems to be few, if any, available. A survey of the literature does suggest that in the past few years research into specific factors which influence the sensory aspects of fruits and vegetables has increased significantly. This increased interest in sensory research and the renewed national awareness of the value of research into pre- and postharvest quality of fruits and vegetables prompted the Flavor Subdivision, Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division, American Chemical Society to sponsor a symposium entitled Sensory Evalua- tion of Fruits and Vegetables: Effect of Environment, Cultural Prac- tices and Variety during the 1982 meeting in Kansas City, Missouri.

We have witnessed a veritable explosion of chemical, physiologic and pharmacologic data on this hypothalamic peptide and the approximately 1500 agonist and antagonist analogs that have been synthesized.… In order to track this expanding field, I was asked to organize an international symposium on basic and clinical aspects of LHRH analogs as part of the Reproductive Health Care: CDS Symposium held in Maui, Hawaii, in October 1982. This meeting brought together a number of the leading investigators in the field. Much new state-of-the-art information was presented which I and my colleagues felt deserved a wider audience. Drs Vickery, Nestor, and Hafez consented to undertake this task. Upon review of the literature, it was apparent that there was no recent text which fully covered the breadth of developments in the field. Accordingly, the editors decided to use the symposium as a nucleus on which to build a singular, comprehensive state-of-the-art analysis of this rapidly growing discipline, and the application of such knowledge to reproductive medicine. As exemplified by the various areas of expertise provided by the individual contributors, it becomes obvious that the scope of the subject matter, while relating solely to a well-defined chemical class (LHRH analogs) and a circumscribed physiologic and pharmacologic entity (reproduction), has expanded enormously.

The in vestigations consist of a literature search and - depending on the results - commissions of experimental studies. It is hoped by means of this testing to close gaps in our know ledge and to increase the scientific validity of the required risk assessments. The results of the toxicological in vestigations carried out by BG Chemie, and the resulting substance assessments have been published in German since 1987 in the form of 132 'Toxikologische Bewer tungen' ('Toxicological Evaluations') up to now. In order to make this useful information internation ally available, BG Chemie began in October 1990 to pub lish them as a book series in English, of which the sixth volume (containing 11 individual evaluations) is presented here. Therefore for 83 existing chemicals 'Toxicological Evaluations' are available in English at the moment, a fur ther 27 are in preparation and will be published soon.

Neuware -Recent developments in various areas of chemistry have been decisively influenced by the principles of structure and mechanism and by the ideas of coordination chemistry, in particular by the donor-acceptor approach, A unified view of almost all kinds of molecular forces is provided by quant…um mechanics, and for practical purposes have been classified according to model assumptions, namely, dispersion, polarization, electrostatic, and short-range forces. The latter are divided into two- and three-center covalent chemical bonds, metallic bonds, and exchange-repulsion forces. This approach allows statements of principle and systematic analysis. However, quantitative predictions on concrete large systems are virtually impossible, and there are no general rules that account for structural and chemical changes due to intermolecular interactions. Chemists are therefore left with qualitative descriptions in which the changes in electron densities are considered. Such models as the MO theory or the resonance concept unrealistically assume that the nuclei remain in fixed positions. Further difficulties are encountered in the attempted description on the 'nature' of the chemical bond, e.g., the forces involved. In order to avoid these difficulties an extension of the donor-acceptor concept, characterized by the comparison between equilibrium structures in different molecular environments, will be presented in this book. In this way, changes in the positions of the nuclei can be taken into account and the question of the nature of the molecular forces is no longer important. 296 pp. Englisch.

However, they were likely to be misinterpreted out of their context. The problem was that current scholarship could not help very much the reader of these writings to figure out their significance. The few available studies about SchrOdinger's interpretation of quantum mechanics are generally excellent, but almost entirely restricted to the initial period 1925-1927. Very little work has been done on Schrodinger's late views on the theory he contributed to create and develop. The generally accepted view is that he never really recovered from his interpretative failure of 1926-1927, and that his late reflections (during the 1950's) are little more than an expression of his rising nostalgia for the lost ideal of picturing the world, not to say for some favourite traditional picture. But the content and style of Schrodinger's texts of the 1950's do not agree at all with this melancholic appraisal; they rather set the stage for a thorough renewal of accepted representations. In order to elucidate this paradox, I adopted several strategies.

Neuware - Ten years ago, de Loor and co-workers at TNO, The Netherlands, were the first to report bottom topography patterns in real aperture radar (RAR) images of the southern North Sea. At that time, this was a real puzzle. The skin depth of microwaves for sea water is only of the order of centimet…ers while the sea bottom is about 20 meters below the surface. Electromagnetic radiation therefore cannot probe the bottom directly. Similar phenomena were found in radar imagery from SEASAT and SIR-AlB synthetic aperture radars (SAR's) of Nantucket Shoals, the English Channel and many other coastal areas. Since then theory and ocean field experiments (Le., Phelps Bank, Georgia Straits, SARSEX, TOWARD, FASINEX, etc.) have advanced our understanding considerably. We now know that these surface signatures are the results of surface currents, perturbed by the bottom topography, which refract the propagation and modulate the energy of (short) surface waves so as to cause microwave backscatter power variations. Hence, any large scale ocean features containing nonuniform surface currents (i.e. internal waves, eddies, fronts, etc.) will cause similar manifestations in the radar imagery by means of current-wave-microwave interactions. Observations confirm this.

Williams first reported that elevated prostaglandin levels are present in human medullary car cinoma. Since that time, the concept that arachidonic acid me…tabolites may be in volved in cancer has expanded to include every aspect of the disease from cell transformation through metastasis. Prostaglandins and leukotrienes are generic terms used to describe a family of bioactive lipids produced from unsaturated fatty acids (principally from arachidonic acid) via the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, respec tively. Cyclooxygenase products consist of diverse products such as prosta glandin Ez (PGEz), prostacyclin (PGIz) and thromboxane Az (TXAz), whereas lipoxygenase products consist of hydroperoxy fatty acids and mono-, di- and tri-hydroxy acids including leukotrienes. The precursor fatty acids for the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways are present in cellular phospholipids. This finding established an important control point in their biosynthesis-the release of substrate. This occurs in response to numerous stimuli that act at the cell surface. Dr. Bengt Samuelsson's extensive study of the metabolism of pros taglandins indicated that they are rapidly inactivated on a single pass through pulmonary circulation. Thus, they cannot act as circulating hormones and appear to be made on demand in or in the vicinity of target tissues leading to the concept that prostaglandins are local hormones or autocoids.
