From production and marketing to financial management, a manager has to assess various costs imposed by uncertainty. The economist ana…lyzes the role of incomplete and too often imperfect information structures on the optimal decisions made by a firm. The need for understanding the role of uncertainty in quantitative decision models, both in economics and management science provide the basic motivation of this monograph. The stochastic environment is analyzed here in terms of the following specific models of optimization: linear and quadratic models, linear programming, control theory and dynamic programming. Uncertainty is introduced here through the para meters, the constraints, and the objective function and its impact evaluated. Specifically recent developments in applied research are emphasized, so that they can help the decision-maker arrive at a solution which has some desirable charac teristics like robustness, stability and cautiousness. Mathematical treatment is kept at a fairly elementary level and applied as pects are emphasized much more than theory. Moreover, an attempt is made to in corporate the economic theory of uncertainty into the stochastic theory of opera tions research. Methods of optimal decision rules illustrated he re are applicable in three broad areas: (a) applied economic models in resource allocation and economic planning, (b) operations research models involving portfolio analysis and stochastic linear programming and (c) systems science models in stochastic control and adaptive behavior. 300 pp. Englisch.

The volume begins with a chapter on the Fundamentals of Boundary Integral Equation Methods in Elastodynamics. After reviewing the basic equations of elasto dynamics, the wave equation and dynamic reciprocal theorems are stated and the direct and indirect boundary element formulations are presented. Eigenvalue problems are discussed together with the case of the Fourier transformations. Several applications illustrate the etfectiveness ofthe technique for engineering. Chapter 2 examines some ofthe various boundary integral equation formulations available for elastodynamic problems. In particular the displacement-traction for mulation is compared with the displacement-potential case. The special character istics ofthe elastodynamics fundamental solutions are discussed in detail and a criti cal comparison with the elastostatics case is presented. While the chapter is not meant to be a complete review of the work in the field, the original presentation of the problern and the suggestions for further work make an important contribu tion to the development ofthe method. 280 pp. Englisch.

These may represent significant pathological changes which can not al ways be fully revealed by the echo pattern alone. There is,… therefore, an increasing need for the supplement of the ultra sonically guided percutaneous puncture, which can be per formed with great accuracy and with virtually no risk. Also, ultrasonically guided puncture has proven invaluable for a wide variety of therapeutic purposes. The first percutaneous puncture guided by ultrasonic scanning using a specifically designed transducer was per formed in 1969 at the ultrasonic laboratory in Gentofte, now Herlev, Hospital, Copenhagen. The idea was based on a punc ture transducer described and used by Kratochwill for punc ture under the guidance of the ultrasonic A-presentation tech nique. The development in the field formed the basis of the First International Conference on Ultrasonically Guided Puncture at Herlev Hospital in 1978 sponsored by The Danish Society of Diagnostic Ultrasound. The knowledge and experience of the speakers at that conference was compiled in the book 'Ultrasonically Guided Puncture Technique' published in 1980. Since then the Society has sponsored a conference at the same place in 1980 and 1983, the latest conference being termed 'Third International Conference on lnterventional Ultrasound'. 188 pp. Englisch.

Thus the shadow economy is certain ly not a new phenomenon. However, economists did not pay much attention to it until quite recently. P. GUTMANN in his pioneering article 'The Subterranean Economy' (Financial Analysts Journal, Nov/Dec 1977, p. 24- 27) was first to point out that unreported economic activity cannot (or, at least, can no longer) be considered as a 'quantite negligeable'. Challenged by GUTMANN's hypothesis many economists have then tried to assess the quantitative and qualitative importance of the shadow economy (commonly also known as the underground, or subterranean, or black, or unreported economy, and by other names). There seems to be wide agreement nowadays that the shadow economy has not only reached a substantial portion of total economic activity in both Eastern and Western countries but that it is also growing at rates which can no longer be experienced in the official sector. The existence of a considerable volume of unreported economic activities implies that important macroeconomic variables are biased in the official statistics. The rate of unemployment, for example, may be over-estimated while production figures, on the other hand, tend to be underrated. The government could thus be mislead and choose inadequate policies. 420 pp. Englisch.

Never theless, we have attempted to maintain the… same basic approach and concepts to student learning as we evinced in the first edition. Any changes to the text are updating of existing practices and knowledge or correction of errors in the original text. The Handbook is still a guide to achieving mastery of the undergraduate curriculum, but over the past five years we have realised the book is also widely used by general practitioners and nurses as well as undergraduate students. It is tempting to enlarge the handbook to encompass all the needs of diverse groups of health personnel, but we have resisted this desire. Instead, the Handbook of Obstetrics and Gynaecology can be regarded as a true guide to aid students in the application of knowledge to the clinical setting. Aseries of international con ferences which started as an informal gathering in London in. 1958 has continued at approximately three-yearly intervals with increasing numbers of participants and more formal organisation, and the proceedings of all but the first have been published. When the preparation of a second edition was suggested to me, I consi dered several questions. ls there still a piace for a comprehensive, clinically orientated book on sarcoidosis Although the reports of the international conferences bring together research reports and some reviews of topics of contemporary interest, they are useful principally to specialists in the sub ject; and, like the original papers scattered through many journals, are not convenient sources of reference for clinicians. Continued enquiries about the availability of the first edition long after it had gone out of print suggested that it had provided such a source. I therefore concluded that a second edition should be prepared, and then had to consider whether, as a physician retired from academic and hospital appointments, I was the right person to undertake the major task of incorporating in it the still-relevant parts of the first edition, the considerable amount of new information that had accumulated since 1967, and a conspectus of current studies. 720 pp. Englisch.

Having it publ ished in English gives me a chance to fulfill one ambition: to be read and judged by the international scientific community. Another reason is that the majority of my professional friends are regrettably unread in Danish, just as I am in Hebrew, Finnish and even Italian. I want to deprive them of the most obvious excuse for not reading my opus. Like a man I admired, I will first of all thank my wife. In his autobiography, Meir Weisgal, then President of the Weizmann Insti tute of SCience, wrote about his wife: 'In addition to her natural endowments - which are considerable - she was a more than competent part-tim~ secretary.' He wrote on, and so shall I. The book has been edited by my wife. So if the reader finds the layout pleasant as, in actual fact, I myself do, Birgit is to be praised. That is to say, it is about those substances that affect certain cells without harming others, even when they are close neighbours. Toxicity need not be fatal. It can be made easily rever…sible, as is the case with general anaesthetics. Selective toxicity covers an immense field: most of the drugs used for treating illness in man and his economic animals, as well as all of the fungicides, insecticides, and weed killers that are used in agriculture. Essentially, this book is a discussion of the physical and chemical means which contribute to selectivity, and this is the basis of molecular pharmacology. _Selective Toxicity began as a course of lectures that Professor F. G. Young encouraged me to give in University College London, in 1948 and again in 1949. The first edition appeared in 1951, as a very small book because little was then known about the factors that provide selectivity. Since those early days, the subject has undergone tremendous development. At first, industry was un receptive to the word 'toxicity', however qualified! Yet the market was being supplied with biologically powerful substances of which several had the potential to cause harm. This aspect was brought to light by two events of the early 1960s. The first of these was the discovery that a sedative, thalidomide, administered to expectant mothers, after what was then considered to be adequate testing, had caused permanent deformities in about 10000 children. 768 pp. Englisch.

Approx imately 25% of all severely disabled persons are hemiplegics (Nichols 1976). Brain damage caused by vascular disease is a tremendous problem for any population and civilization. Causes and effects, with the resulting symptoms, vary so widely that the problems are only gradually being recognized, and then perhaps not fully, even by the most committed research workers, doctors and therapists. The function al disturbances that arise as a result of cerebro-vascular accident, that is following stroke, in young and old do not differ fundamentally for the different age groups. These deductions ar…e concerned with the structures of the microsystems rather than the technical details of the construction of preparation and registration devices. Accordingly. the only new axioms (relative to Volume I) which are introduced are concerned with the relationship between ensemble operators W, effect operators F, and certain construction principles of the preparation and registration devices. The applications described here are concerned with the measurement of atomic and molecular structure and of collision experiments. An additional and essential step towards a theoretical description of the preparation and registration procedures is carried out in Chapter XVII. Here we demonstrate how microscopic collision processes (that is, processes which can be described by quantum mechanics) can be used to obtain novel preparation and registration procedures if we take for granted the knowledge of only a few macroscopic preparation and registration procedures. By clever use of collision processes we are often able to obtain very precise results for the operators Wand F which describe the total procedures from a very imprecise knowledge of the macroscopic parts of the preparation and regis tration processes. In this regard experimental physicists have done brilliant work.
