These Proceedings contain most of the scientific contributions offered during the Congress. The Brussels Congress was the largest thus far held in the series of International Congresses on Photosynthesis. It counted over 1100 active participants. The organizers tried to minimize the disadvantages of such a large size by making maximum use of the facili ties available on a university campus. Most contributions were offered in the form of posters which were displayed in a substantial number of classrooms. The discussion sessions, twice a day, four or five in parallel, took place in lecture rooms in the very vicinity of these classrooms. In this way it was attempted to generate the atmosphere of a small meeting. The unity of the subject Photosynthesis was preserved in the ten plenary lectures, organ~sed in such a way that a general overview of two diverse topics was given every day. In addition, there were the five times four parallel symposia dealing with some six teen general topics. This book contains chapters on the basic principles of the technique, time dependent problems, fluid mechanics, hydraulics, geomechanics and plate bending. The number of non-linear and time dependent problems which have become amenable to solution using boundary elements have induced many researchers to investigate in depth the basis of the method. Chapter 0 of this book presents an ap proach based on weighted residual and error approximations, which permits easy construction of the governing boundary integral equations. Chapter I reviews the theoretical aspects of integral equation formulations with emphasis in their mathematical aspects. The analysis of time dependent problems is presented in Chap. 2 which describes the time and space dependent integral formulation of heat conduction problems and then proposes a numerical procedure and time marching algorithm. Chapter 3 reviews the application of boundary elements for fracture mechanics analysis in the presence of thermal stresses. We can think ofLeonardo da Vinci's drawings of helicopters and submarines among many other examples. Computer-Assisted Learning (CAL) is an example of an idea which has had a particularly long gestation. As I will illustrate early in the book, the principles of CAL were really first discovered by Socrates. As a formal method of teaching, the Socratic method disappeared for over two millennia until the 1950s. It was then revived in the form ofProgrammed Learning (PL) which resulted from the researches ofB. F. Skinner at Harvard University. Even then, PL was premature. In the 1950s and 60s, methods were devised, such as teaching machines and various sorts ofPL text books, and there was a mushrooming of PL publishing at that time. For a complex of reason- economic, logistical and technical-PL also largely disappeared from the mid- 60s, although it continued in a few specialized areas ofteaching and industrial training. However, during the same period, PL quietly transformed itselfinto CAL. But the computerized form was not capable of mass dissemination until recently hecause personal microcomputers did not have sufficient internal memory sizes. That situation has now changed very dramatically and 128K microcomputers are becoming cheap and widely available. Cheap memory chips of256K and 1024K cannot be far away, either.

However, these and other new methods, such as electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry, have only relatively recently become gener ally available for routine use in histopathology. Muscle biopsy is a long-established technique in clinical practice, having been introduced by Duchenne in 1868 (Arch. Gen. Med. , 11, 5-179). However, the needle method used by Duchenne was not generally adopted, although Shank and Hoagland described a similar technique in 1943 (Science, 98, 592). During this time muscle biopsies required a surgical procedure and this was a considerable disincentive to their use. It was not until Bergstrom (1962; Scand. J. Clin. Lab. Invest. , 14, Suppl. 68) and Edwards (1971; Lancet, ii, 593--6) developed a simple biopsy needle suitable for muscle work in connection with exercise physiology that the advantages of needle muscle biopsies came to be appreciated. Since then, muscle biopsies have become a relatively minor procedure. This has led to the increasing use of muscle biopsy in clinical practice, both for diagnosis and for assessing progress in repeated biopsies during the course of a disorder and its treatment. The full range of enzyme histochemical and ultrastructural histological techniques can be applied to these small biopsies and many of the older histological staining methods can also be used. University programs are providing more staff, but the existing staff must also be trained. We have been involved for several years, with the special education branch of the Nebraska Department of Edu cation in the provision of in-service training in the early identifi cation and assessment of handicapping conditions, when we realized an even greater need for training regular classroom teachers, administra tors, and psychologists in addition to early childhood special educa tion personnel about the nature of low-incidence handicaps and how they might be dealt with in the public school setting. Knowing the enormity and the expense of such an undertaking, we tenuously ap proached the State Department. They too were cognizant of this need and welcomed our ideas. To our astonishment a vast majority of researchers in this area took it for granted that their, mostly thoroughly derived, micro models could meaningfully be confronted with per capita data. Nany of them did not even realize - at least they gave no utterance to it - that applying macro data in micro models raises considerable problems. Those who did mention the difficulty, almost always belittled its importance. Fortunately, there are noteworthy exceptions. Taswell One year before this symposium, Cees Smit Sibinga and I began to discuss an approach to quality assurance in the blood bank which we felt would be both important and practical and could serve as the basis for the choice of subjects to be presented in the symposium. As an introduction to this book, I would like to outline our approach, the subjects chosen and the rationale behind our choice. What is the fundamental purpose of a blood bank and trans fusion service Simply stated, the purpose of a blood bank and transfusion service and of a quality assurance program in blood banking is, for the one to provide and, the other to assure safe and effective transfusion therapy. This objective is in contrast to that of other clinical laboratories. The objective in a clinical chemistry laboratory is to produce accurate test results which will be meaningful to the clinician taking care of his patient. In most clinical laboratories, therefore, the goals of a quality assurance program are largely quantitative, that is, to assure accurate numerical test results. In contrast, in the blood bank, the goals of quality assurance are primarily qualitative, that is, to assure safe and effective transfusion. As a result, two somewhat different approaches to quality assurance are necessary.

Vitamin D metabolites and analogs have found increasing application in clinical medicine. Neuware -Murfor Lagerfugenbewehrungen werden in der Praxis zur Verhinderung von Schäden als Folge von Rissen im Mauerwerk, verursacht durch ZWängungsbeanspruchungen, verwendet. In besonderen Fällen kann eine Lag- fugenbewehrung auch statisch erforderlich sein. Zur Abklärung des Einflusses der Bewehrung auf das Ri- und Tragverhalten von Mauerwerkswänden wurden Zugversuche an sechs Mauerwerkkörpern durchgeführt. Ziel der Versuche war die qualitative Abklärung der Interaktion von Bewehrungsgehalt, Rissweite und Tr- verhalten. Die Versuchsparameter waren das Steinmaterial , der Bewehrungsgehalt und sekundär die Bewehrun- anordnung. Es wurden je drei Wände aus Backstein (BN 15 M) und Kalksandstein (KN 18) hergestellt. Der Zementmörtel war für alle Versuche identisch. Alle Wände wiesen eine Lagerfugenbewehrung auf. Die drei Wände unterschieden sich in der Bewehrung wie folgt: (A) eine Murfor-Bewehrung ß 4 mm in jeder zweiten Fuge (ß 4; 1/2 M/L) (B) eine Murfor-Bewehrung ß 5 mm in jeder zweiten Fuge (ß 5; 1/2 M/L) (C) eine Murfor-Bewehrung ß 4 mm in jeder Fuge (ß 4; 1/1 M/L) Die Wände wurden in Richtung der Lagerfugen mit zentrischem Zug belastet. Gemessen wurden die Last, die Verformung in Kraftrichtung und die Rissweiten. Neuware -Noch vor zehn Jahren hätte man unter dem Titel des Berichtes 'Gewährleistung der Sicherheit von Bauwerken' im wesentlichen eine Abhandlung über die Festlegung oder die Wahl geeigneter Sicherheitsfaktoren, über Sicherheitsmargen oder über geeignete Verfahren zur Abschätzung der Tragwerkszuverlässigkeit erwartet. Heute ist das nicht mehr der Fall. Man hat erkannt, dass die Sicherheit von Bauwerken in oft entscheidendem Ausmass davon abhängt, was man in sehr frühen Phasen des Bauprozesses an ge danklicher Vorarbeit leistet, und was während der ganzen Ent stehungsgeschichte des Bauwerks und während seiner Nutzung ge gen Fehler getan wird. Dieser Bericht geht deshalb über die traditionellen Ansätze hinaus und beschreibt ein alle Bereiche des Bauprozesses erfassendes Konzept zur Gewährleistung der Sicherheit von Bauwerken. Wir haben uns um eine die Lesbarkeit fördernde Kürze bemüht, weil wir manche Teile dieses Berichtes, der die Forschungsergebnisse einer beinahe zehnjährigen Arbeit zusammenfasst, schon andernorts weit ausführlicher dargelegt haben. Die Ergebnisse sind auch bereits in einige parallel vor angetriebene Arbeiten auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene eingegangen und deshalb wirksam, bevor dieser Bericht erscheint. Die hier zusammengefassten Arbeiten wurden zu einem kleinen Teil aus ordentlichen Mitteln der ETH Zürich und von Versicherungs gesellschaften finanziert.
