This controversy was especially acute in Great Britain, which was torn between its distrust of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy on the one hand and of Communist Russia on the other. The British public, pacifist in sen…timent and determined to avoid war at almost any cost, sensed the danger implicit in the Civil War, yet realised its impotence to control events in Spain which indeed it little understood. The British Government, though under heavy attack from the Opposition and from a handful of its own supporters, succeeded in its endeavours to keep the country out of war on this occasion. The neutrality of Spain, even after Mussolini had entered World War II, was of inestimable value to Britain after the debacle in the summer of 1940. It may be therefore that British policy during the Civil War paid off later on as well as achieving its purpose at the time. Dr. Kleine's book, lucidly written and carefully documented, ex amines the British attitude toward the Spanish Civil War. The author has the advantage of belonging to a generation which is able to analyse these events with historical detachment. Yet his understanding and easy style have made the period live. Neutrality was not easy for Britain. Its far-reaching interests in trading with Spain and in passage through Iberian waters again and again raised awkward problems.

I present the judgement of the Special Tribunal in full and the story of the assassinations for the record, in the hope that they will serve historians and our peoples in Burma in several ways. Mr. ]ustice Mya Thein of the High Court gave me the records which he compiled of the trial while serving on the prosecution. That was a few years ago, and I have, since then, wanted to edit and publish a book of the trial. Dr. Myint Thein, Chief ]ustice of the Union, also gave his file of the records to the Defence Services Historical Research Institute, and I was able to check and compare the papers. To both I owe and sincerely acknow ledge thanks. I share with Hegel the conviction that the rational is the real and the real is the rational. I have learned something from Hegel and borrowed here a…nd there. But the reader should not jump to conclusions. I rather fear that anti-Hegelians will not get past the title and that Hegelians, upon discovering heresy, will give up after the first chapter, but I continue to hope that my fear is quite unjustified. I should, I think, say something about the relation between this book and an earlier work, a University of London Ph. D. thesis, entitled Some Problems in British Idealist Ontology - a Re-examination and Attempted Reconstruction. There, I surveyed some key problems in idealist metaphysics and also endeavoured to discover just how strong a case could be made for the idealist position. I decided that a pretty strong case could be made and I was very nearly convinced by it. The position I have developed here is no longer, strictly speaking, idealist though it is perhaps more nearly idealist than anything else. I have used some ideas developed in the earlier work and some of the chapter titles are the same. 108 pp. Englisch.

The Ger man domination of that country (the so-called Anschluss) heralded the beginning of a diplomatie demarche. The event also had deep implications for the legal syst…em of the international community. The Allied occupation of Austria after W orId War II and the long delay in attaining aState Treaty to arrange for the Allied withdrawal from Austrian territory eventually gave rise to some doubts as to the international legal status of the latter. This study is confined to an examination of the international legal problems involved in Austria's changed status from the Anschluss of March 13, I938, until the signing of the State Treaty on May 15, 1955. It is not intended to be a history of the period covered and no attempt is made to treat fully such fascinating topics as the diplo matie negotiations leading up to the Anschluss or the story of the long struggle between the occupying powers to attain aState Treaty for Austria. The time span of this work was deliberately chosen in a desire to confine it to an appraisal ofthe legal continuity ofthe Austrian State and an evaluation of the impact of the Austrian question on the traditional law of state succession and recognition. The problem of Austria's new neutralized status resulting from the negotiations in connection with and subsequent to the signing of the Austrian State Treaty is worthy of separate treatment and is not dealt with in the present study. 172 pp. Englisch.

Made up of unions chiefly concerned with protecting workers of German nationali…ty from the competition of cheap Czech labor, the German nationalist labor movement was strongest in Bohemia, where the rivalry between Czechs and Germans in the labor market was most acute. Much of Austrian industry was in northern Bohemia, and as it expanded in the latter half of the nineteenth century large riumbers of Czechs moved from the countryside into the industrial centers. Many German workers were displaced by the Czech immigrants, who were accustomed to lower standards of living and therefore willing to accept lower pay. The anger of the German workers developed into an intense hatred of the Czechs, the Czechs resented German domination, and as a result of the mutual enmity, the Socialist international unions split into German and Czech sections. Some of these became separate German and Czech nationalist unions. Other German nationalist unions grew out of the protective associations that were organized by gro. ups of German workers against the Czech danger. Around the turn of the century the leaders of some of the more militant German nationalist unions decided that they could further the members' interests more effectively if the unions were affiliated with a political party under their own control: collaboration with radical nationalists had proved disappointing. 160 pp. Englisch.

FlLON to describe such problems as tension, push, bending by couples, torsion, and flexure by a transverse load. Looked at physically these problems differ from those of plane elasticity… already treated \* in that certain shearing stresses no longer vanish. This book is concerned with antiplane elastic systems in equilibrium or in steady motion within the framework of the linear theory, and is based upon lectures given at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, to officers of the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors, and on technical reports recently published at the Mathematics Research Center, United States Army. My aim has been to tackle each problem, as far as possible, by direct rather than inverse or guessing methods. Here the complex variable again assumes an important role by simplifying equations and by introducing order into much of the treatment of anisotropic material. The work begins with an introduction to tensors by an intrinsic method which starts from a new and simple definition. This enables elastic properties to be stated with conciseness and physical clarity. This course in no way commits the reader to the exclusive use of tensor calculus, for the structure so built up merges into a more familiar form. Nevertheless it is believed that the tensor methods outlined here will prove useful also in other branches of applied mathematics. 276 pp. Englisch.

Today these problems are too often taken to be merely verbal…, so that answers to them so far as these are metaphysical are confidently claimed to be 'nonsense. ' My labours will, therefore, seem to minds thus committed to have been untimely and funda mentally futile. Untimely they may have been, but unless also fu tile their untimeliness may render them the more exigent; and to judge them as futile is to claim a certainty not avaIlable to the honest sceptic. Vigorous attempts to discredit metaphysical investigation are no new thing, though the latest is, perhaps, the most thoroughgoing, and cer tainly the most self-confident. Yet it may well be argued that effective criticism of metaphysics is either itself a sort of metaphysics, or has for its foundation presuppositions that could only be metaphysically es tablished. 'Naturam expellas furca, tamen usque recu'et. ' Metaphysics survives, and can only survive as a true philosophia perennis, as the catalyst of scepsis and schism - neither as inexorable dogma 'once for all de livered,' nor as 'a plant that cometh of the lust of the earth, without a formal seed. 252 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This brief study of the 1945 expulsion of German populations from Eastern-Central and Eastern Europe does not by any means pretend to be a complete and exhaustive analysis of a subject so massive, complex and controversial. Moreover…, it is selective: in dealing with the reception of the expellees it focuses on West Germany, which though most extensively involved, is nevertheless only one of the many countries affected by the exodus. Yet the writer feels that even by presenting barely the funda mentals he can still hope to make some contribution to a field which -at least in the English speaking world - is far from being explored, analyzed and evaluated. His concentration on West Germany has been stimulated by two factors. First, this is the part of the former Reich which is most immediately affected by the transfer. Second, as a result of this involvement it is in West Germany that documentation and literature on the question are most extensive. Indeed, to obtain proper information and data from those countries within the Soviet orbit which are in any way linked with the problem is difficult and at times even impossible. For obvious reasons, in these countries interest is centered, and quite understandably, not on the expulsion of the Germans, but rather on the transfer, dispersion, and annihilation of their own peoples under the Nazi conquest, events, which, in turn, many Germans prefer to keep forgotten. 108 pp. Englisch.

It should be pointed out that only compounds containing at least one carbon arsenic, carbon-antimony, and carbon-bismuth bond, respectively, are included in the survey. HIGHLIGHTS The discovery of the chemotherapeutic efficacy of monosodium- arsanilate, 3,3'-diamino-4,4' -dihydroxyarsenobenzene, and 3-amino-4,4'-dihydroxy-3' (sulfinomethylamino)arsenobenzene sodium salt (Atoxyl, Salvarsan, and Neosalvarson, respectively) provided inpetus to extensive research of organoarsenicals, which slakened only after the discovery of antibiotics. After 1936, a great variety of substituted arenearsonic and diarylarsinic acids was prepared and reduced to various types of trivalent arsenic derivatives, Further modifications of the Bart method were made, and aryldiazonium fluoroborates, chlorozincates, and chloroferrates, which are more stable than aryldiazonium chlorides, were introduced as the arylat ing agents in the preparation of aromatic derivatives of arsenic. 620 pp. Englisch.

Die automatisch registrie renden Gerate und die Besonderheiten der MeBmethode werden im einzelnen beschrieben. Die MeBergebnisse sind in 45 Kurvenblattern (Teil B) zusammengefaBt. Neben den Rontgenstrahlungsausbrtichen, die verhaltnis maBig haufig in der Nordlichtzone auftreten, wurden 4 FaIle von Injektionen solarer Protonen am 12. , 18. , 20. und 27. Juli registriert, wahrend sich 2 sehr aktive Fackel gebiete tiber die Sonnenscheibe hinwegbewegten. Die verschiedenen Ereignisse werden kurz diskutiert. Die hier beschriebenen Messungen fanden zu einem groBen Teil gleichzeitig mit solchen ahnlicher Art statt, die von amerikanischen Gruppen durchgeftihrt wurden. I. Introduction Until 20 years ago most of our knowledge on cosmical ob jects was based merely on the analysis of visible light reaching the earth from outer space. This changed when appropriate techniques had been developed to utilize in creasingly the perception that every kind of radiation or - generally spoken - any structure of energy hitting the earth carries information on its origin and on the con ditions in space which influenced its qualities and propagation. This holds especially also for radiation of charged particles.
