In addition, the Boston meeting presented three Young Investigator awards, one in each of the major focus areas. The meeting was exciting and proved to be very memorable. The program was developed with an emphasis on recent advances in molecular and of lipid mediators relevant in cellular mechanisims involved in the formation and actions inflammation and cancer. Plenary lectures were presented by Prof. Bengt Sammuelsson (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm; 1982 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine) and Prof. E. 1. Corey (Harvard University; 1990 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry). Both of these plenary lectures were held on Day 1, which set an exciting tone for this meeting. Immediately following these plenary lectures, three simultaneous breakout sessions were held, one of inflammation, a second on cancer and synthesis of novel inhibitors, and a third on enzymes-lipoxygenases/cyclooxygenases and inhibitors.

The International…Symposium was successful with 225 participants from 29 countries. We acknowledge a large number of participants from Asian countries, in particular, from China, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines, presumably because this was the fIrst time that the International Symposium on Plant Lipids was held in Asia. We also acknowledge a number of scientists from Canada, France, Germany, UK and USA, where plant lipid research is traditionally very active. The Symposium provided an opportunity for presentation and discussion of 68 lectures and 93 posters in 11 scientific sessions, which together covered all aspects of plant lipid researches, such as the structure, analysis, biosynthesis, regulation, physiological function, environmental aspects, and the biotechnology of plant lipids. In memory of the founder of this series of symposia, the Terry Galliard Lecture was delivered by Professor Ernst Heinz from Universitat: Hamburg, Germany. In addition, special lectures were given by two outstanding scientists from animal lipid fields, Professor James Ntambi from University of Wisconsin, USA, and Dr. Masahiro Nishijima from the National Institute for Infectious Diseases, Japan. Furthermore, scientists are being challenged not only to reduce mortality, but also to improve quality of life. Thus, more than ever, intellectuals from different disciplines including biology, sociology, informatics and health care have to join forces to meet the mandate. The World Heart Congress with a focus on 'Frontiers in Cardiovascular Health' held in Winnipeg during July 6-11, 2001, made a unique attempt to bring these specialists together to brainstorm and map out the course of action for cardiovascular research and health in the next century. Anytime there is a relative increase in the workload on the heart, there are adap tive myocardial as well as humoral responses. When these adaptations or remodel ing at the organ, subcellular or gene level, become inadequate for a proper tissue perfusion, the condition of heart failure ensues. Prevention of the factors leading to the relative increase in workload as well as a better understanding of the adap tive responses and their failure are some of the hopes to combat the morbidity and mortality due to heart failure.

This book is a rigorous and self-contained exposition of the techniques of 'motion by curvature'. The approach is axiomatic and formulated in terms of geometric invariance with respect to the position of the observer. This is translated into mathematical terms, and the author develops the approach of Olver, Sapiro and Tannenbaum, which classifies all curve evolution equations. He then draws a complete parallel with another axiomatic approach using level-set methods: this leads to generalized curvature motions. Finally, novel, and very accurate, numerical schemes are proposed allowing oneto compute the solution of highly degenerate evolution equations in a completely invariant way. As is customary at FC, these proceedings represent 'final' versions of the papers presented, revised to take into…account comments and discussions from the conference. Submissions to the conference were strong, with 74 papers submitted and 19 accepted for presentation and publication. (Regrettably, three of the submit ted papers had to be summarily rejected after it was discovered that they had been improperly submitted in parallel to other conferences.) The small program committee worked very hard under a tight schedule (working through Christmas day) to select the program. No program chair could ask for a better committee; my thanks to everyone for their hard work and dedication. In addition to the refereed papers, the program included a welcome from the Minister of Telecommunications and e-Commerce, Renee Webb, a keynote address by Nigel Hickson, and a panel on privacy tradeoffs cheiired by Rebecca Wright (with panelists Ian Goldberg, Ron Rivest, and Graham Wood). The traditional Tuesday evening 'rump session' was skillfully officiated by Markus Jakobsson. My job as program chair was made much, much easier by the excellent work of our general chair, Nicko van Someren, who performed the miracle of hiding from me any evidence of the innumerable logistical nightmares associated with conducting this conference. This was the well-known 'beer-ga…me' that is often played in business schools to illus trate the 'bullwhip' effect in supply chains. Al had said to me that he did not have to tell his students how to reorder replacement parts from the other members of the supply chain because he knew from experience that the order sizes the players would generate as the game progressed would become chaotic anyhow. Since I had not played the beer game, his asser tion was intriguing to me. Why would such an unstructured game always lead to the same undesirable effect Did it have something to do with psy chology What is it that players did to generate instabilities I posed these to other people but could not get completely satisfactory an questions swers. Thus, the bullwhip mystery remained, at least in my mind. Since inventory chains are 'conservative' systems analogous to a traffic stream, and since traffic flow models exhibit similar effects (the instability of automobile platoons and of certain numerical methods being two nota ble examples)' I suspected that traffic flow theory might shed some light on the puzzle. 136 pp. Englisch.
