The c- ceptual level results from data modeling and logical database design. When it is imp- mented via an RDBMS such as Oracle, it is mapped onto the internal level. Database - jects of the conceptual level are associated with their physical counterparts in the internal level. An external level results from a query against the database and, as such, provides a window to the database. There are many external levels for a single conceptual level.

Identification, assessment, and treatment of children with externalizing behavior problems and learningdisabilities is critical to optimizing development and prevention of relatively - tractable behavioral and emotional problems in adulthood. For example, poor interpersonal problem solving and social skills excesses and deficits are strongly associated with poor o- come in adolescence and adulthood. The school is where children learn essential academic, social, and impulse control skills that allow them to function effectively in later years. School is where problems in these areas can be most easily identified and addressed. The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of assessment practices for evaluating children's externalizing behavior problems exhibited in the school environment. Reviews of approximately 100 assessment devices for measuring children's externalizing problems are included. Instruments include structured interviews, rating scales, and observational methods.

Optical backbone networks efficiently achieve a high level of traffic aggregation by multiplexing numerous users on circuit-switche…d wavelength paths - the so-called wavelength routing approach. In contrast, the reduced level of traffic aggregation in access and metro networks makes wavelength routing solutions not adequate. In these network areas, packet-interleaved optical time-division multiplexing with its finer and more dynamic bandwidth allocation is advocated. The book presents such an approach, known as photonic slot routing. It illustrates how this approach may provide a cost-effective solution to deploying all-optical transport networks, using today's optical device technology. To that end, the author combines DWDM-technology with fixed slot optical switching, and gives a comprehensive description of this approach in which slots are aligned across the wavelengths to form groups of data-flows that propagate as a whole inside the network. Operating algorithms are developed, and network performance is analyzed, both by means of theoretical analysis and many simulations of sample networks. This work will be of particular interest to researchers and professionals who are active in photonic networking.

It began within the research project 'Actions and Passions of the Mind from 1200-1700' which was financed by the Nordic Research Council in the Humanities (NOS-H) between 1999 and 2001, but as the topi…c became clearer the book grew and the final product involves several people outside the original group in the NOS-H project. Many of the papers published here started as talks given at meetings of the project, but no meeting resembles the finished book. Indeed, all the articles are, in the end, written just for this volume. One of the overarching aims of the NOS-H project was to highlight the continuity between medieval and modem philosophy of mind, and, as edi tors, we also took this perspective when planning the volume. The individual articles pertain to give an accurate and philosophically interesting treatment of the thinker or period they discuss, but nonetheless the overall picture isone of continuity between not only medieval and early modem psychology of action, but also between late ancient and medieval thinking on emotions and choice.

The Editor in-Chief, Professor Dusan Mesko, conceived the idea of the Vademecum during a very intensely, in tellectually active period as a…visiting Olga Havel Fellow from Slovak Republic at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. It was here during his study stay that much of the conceptual planning and detailed realization was being completed. It was with much interest that I observed Professor Mesko in his effort, and I know while here he has gained admiration of those who had the privilege of interacting with him. When the first edition of the Vademecum ap peared and we received the copy for the Mayo Library and for myself, I was overcome with a genuine sense of joy. In this era of rapid information and the need to access usable infor mation book such as this cannot be but judged extremely useful. It is my hope that this work, which attests to the thoroughness of Professor Mesko's and his co-workers efforts will prove to be fruitful for the students quick reference, for clinicans and house officers lightening of burdens, particularly of on-call nights, and for the teaching staff as well to quickly access needed information. With these sentiments, we wish the authors and the book well and also hope that the potential widening circle of readers and users will benefit from the work pre sented.

As a member of the panel, this author asked those in the audience who lived and/or worked in a country different from their country of origin to raise their hands. Ab…out half of the audience of well over one hundred academic teachers and researchers from all comers of the world, the present author included did so. Next he asked who had a spouse or partner from a country different from their country of origin to also raise their hands. About half of the audience, the present author included, raised their hands. This is the soft side of globalisation. The soft side of globalisation is important. Exchanges, personal mobility, international romances, multi-culturalism and multi-lingualism (inevitably meaning non-native speakers struggling to keep up with native English speakers) are part of the academic scene, so much so that we can hardly imagine it to be otherwise. These are not entirely new phenomena, but they have become ever more prominent, relying on an ever more elaborate institutional infrastructure of exchange programmes, international journals, associations and the global conference industry. It was at the AESOP (Association of European Schools of Planning) congress at Bmo in the Czech Republic in July 2000 that the plan for this book was hatched.

Hence, sustainable development is more precisely defined as a process of change in which the exploitation of resources, the direction of investments, the orientation of technological development, and institutional change are all in harmony and enhance both current and future potential to meet human needs and aspiration. To date, various definitions and stationary-state criteria of sustainability have been proposed. Many authors have been concerned with only part of the problem, such as the technological assumptions, the ability to substitute natural resources in economic transformation processes, and the resilience and importance of ecological processes. But, the social dimension did not receive the same attention, and has not been adequately integrated into formal analysis. The engineering community has to play an important role in sustainable development with appropriate evaluation of the engineering systems. In this respect energy, water and environment systems require multi-criteria evaluation methods for the assessment of the economic, environmental and social aspect of the systems.

The Editor in-Chief, Professor Dusan Mesko, conceived the idea of the Vademecum during a very intensely, in tellectually active period as a…visiting Olga Havel Fellow from Slovak Republic at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. It was here during his study stay that much of the conceptual planning and detailed realization was being completed. It was with much interest that I observed Professor Mesko in his effort, and I know while here he has gained admiration of those who had the privilege of interacting with him. When the first edition of the Vademecum ap peared and we received the copy for the Mayo Library and for myself, I was overcome with a genuine sense of joy. In this era of rapid information and the need to access usable infor mation book such as this cannot be but judged extremely useful. It is my hope that this work, which attests to the thoroughness of Professor Mesko's and his co-workers efforts will prove to be fruitful for the students quick reference, for clinicans and house officers lightening of burdens, particularly of on-call nights, and for the teaching staff as well to quickly access needed information. The need to render the heart ischemic for a…brief period to invoke the preconditioning response is currently the major factor limiting clinical application of this powerful cardioprotective strategy. Recent research efforts have utilized brief exposures to pharmacological agents, in lieu of a brief preconditioning ischemia, to trigger/mimic the ischemic preconditioning-induced response. The World Heart Congress held in Winnipeg in July 2001 provided a forum for the presentation of new insights into the basic mechanisms of ischemia and reperfusion injury, as well as novel strategies to protect the heart from cell death, ventricular arrhythmias, and contractile dysfunction. Many pioneers in the fields of ischemia-reperfusion injury and preconditioning-induced protection presented there and the chapters in this book represent selected papers from these symposia.
