With model selection the focus can he on simultaneous competition between a hroad dass of competing models rather than on consideration of a sequence of simpler and simpler models.

Thoseideas warrant further development. The final chapter dealswith effective aspects of the Hilbert IrreducibilityTheorem, harkening back to earlier work of the author. Now the scope is expanded to Asian-Pacific Countries in coverage, so that this mo…nograph presents the econometric models of Japan, the United States, Canada, China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singa pore, Indonesia, Australia and the European Community. We are particularly happy to have included the excellent models of Australia and Canada whose economies are essential parts of the Asian-Pacific Economic Community. Most of those models were presented at the Workshop of Asian Link Project held in Bandung, Indonesia at the time of the Second Convention of the East Asian Eco nomic Association, 1990. Those models have been up-dated since then, and several other important models were added. Unlike our previous book, we have not tried here to link these national models as a regional or global model in any way, ex cept for the model by S. Kinoshita which offers a regional linkage for Pacific-basin economies by linking the US, Japan, Canada, the European Community coun tries as a group, Asian NIEs (Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan), ASEAN (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore) and East Asian economies. The project stemmed from a recognition of the importance of computer graphics a'i an ena bling technology in many application areas, and of the need to build bridges between computer graphics and telecommunications. The overall aims of the pro ject were twofold: - Advance the state of the art in the transfer of graphical information across international networks. - Improve quality and applicability of standards in this area. This book records the key results of the project and the contributions the project has made to standardization related to the transfer of graphical information across open networks. Contributions have included a demonstration of a prototype appli cation - a road transport information system running over public international of a new data networks - shown at the Esprit '91 exhibition, the standardization FT AM document type allowing structured access to graphical information (represented according to the Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) standard) and major contributions to a mapping of the X-Windows protocol onto an OSI stack. Yet little attention has been paid to iron, the…most abundant transitional metal in the body and the earth's crust. Iron plays a major role as a cofactor of numerous metabolic enzymes, it is important for DNA and protein synthesis, and has a crucial role in the oxygen carrying capacity of haemoglobin. Some of the most devastating diseases of systemic organs are associated with abnormal iron metabolism. Yet only very recently its role in the central nervous system has been considered. Thus nutritional iron defi ciency and iron overload afflict some 500-600 million people. It is also well recognized that too little or too much iron can produce profound effects on the metabolic state of the cell, and therefore the regulation of iron uptake and disposition is tightly relegated by the cell. Its transport into the cell and storage are handled by transferrin, ferritin and haemo siderin. Nowhere are these processes so well recognized as in the case of brain iron metabolism. Iron does not have ready access to the adult brain as it does to other tissues, since it does not cross the blood brain barrier (BBB). All the iron present in brain is deposited before the closure of BBB at an early age where it is sequestered and conserved. Therefore its turnover is extremely slow. 220 pp. Englisch.

In a r…elatively short time, specification notations have found their place in industry and are used for the description of a wide variety of software and hardware systems. A formal method - like VDM - must offer a mathematically-based specification language. On this language rests the other key element of the formal method: the ability to reason about a specification. Proofs can be empioyed in reasoning about the potential behaviour of a system and in the process of showing that the design satisfies the specification. The existence of a formal specification is a prerequisite for the use of proofs; but this prerequisite is not in itself sufficient. Both proofs and programs are large formal texts. Would-be proofs may therefore contain errors in the same way as code. During the difficult but inevitable process of revising specifications and devel opments, ensuring consistency is a major challenge. It is therefore evident that another requirement - for the successful use of proof techniques in the development of systems from formal descriptions - is the availability of software tools which support the manipu lation of large bodies of formulae and help the user in the design of the proofs themselves. 380 pp. Englisch.

The present book was developed in order to devote an entire casebook to both standard and more innovative clinical applications of behavioral treatments to adult problems. The book, containing 19 chapters, is divided into two parts. In the first part, in a chapter entitled Clinical Considerations, we discuss a variety of clinical issues that are of importance to designing and executing behaviorally based interventions with adults. The bulk of the book, the remaining 18 chap ters, contains a variety of cases presented by our experts. Each of the treatment cases is presented using the same format in order to increase consistency and comparability across chapters. When we were collecting the material, we felt that one special pleasure of the field lay in its evocation of an… earlier age: many of our 'probabilistic forefathers' were dexterous solvers of discrete problems. We hope that this pleasure will be transmitted to the readers. The first problem-book of a similar kind as ours is perhaps Mosteller's well-known Fifty Challenging Problems in Probability (1965). Possibly, our book is the second. The book contains 125 problems and snapshots from the world of prob ability. A 'problem' generally leads to a question with a definite answer. A 'snapshot' is either a picture or a bird's-eye view of some probabilistic field. The selection is, of course, highly subjective, and we have not even tried to cover all parts of the subject systematically. Limit theorems appear only seldom, for otherwise the book would have become unduly large. We want to state emphatically that we have not written a textbook in probability, but rather a book for browsing through when occupying an easy-chair. Therefore, ideas and results are often put forth without a machinery of formulas and derivations; the conscientious readers, who want to penetrate the whole clockwork, will soon have to move to their desks and utilize appropriate tools. 256 pp. Englisch.
