In addition to these institutional reports of case material, there are reviews on genetics, pathology, and a diagnostic evaluation of children. The overview chapter on adrenal cortical carcinoma includes recommendations for radiotherapy from Dr. D' Angio and for che motherapy from Dr. Philip Schein. Individuals using these recommended therapies are encouraged to report their results to the editors. The informa tion will then be made available to others on request. Kettering Foundation Research Laboratory and the Tennessee Valley Authority. This support has helped research progress in this broad field of science by offering a forum both for the exchange of ideas and for scientific summary and discussion as captured over the last 10 years in each of the four books published previously. Although all previous meetings were well attended, the present conference was the largest so far. 550 scien tists from 60 different countries attended the 'Leeuwenhorst Conference', re presenting the many different disciplines actively involved in research in this field: chemists, biochemists, molecular biologists, geneticists, microbiologists, plant physiologists, agriculturalists. A large number of them had to go through a difficult period to raise the necessary funds to attend. In addition, a parallel meeting of 'policymakers' from Southeast Asia, Africa and South America was held under the auspices of Crosscurrents International Institute, Dayton, OR, USA and the United Nations University, Tokyo, Japan. Opti cal diffraction gratings date from the nineteenth century and are still widely used by sp…ectroscopists. More recently, diffraction gratings have been used as coupling devices for optical waveguides. Trains of surface waves on the oceans are natural diffraction gratings which influence the scattering of electromagnetic waves and underwater sound. Similarly, the surface of a crystal acts as a diffraction grating for the scattering of atomic beams. This list of natural and artificial diffraction gratings could easily be extended. The purpose of this monograph is to develop from first principles a theory of the scattering of acoustic and electromagnetic waves by periodic surfaces. In physical terms, the scattering of both time-harmonic and transient fields is analyzed. The corresponding mathematical model leads to the study of boundary value problems for the Helmholtz and d'Alembert wave equations in plane domains bounded by periodic curves. In the formal ism adopted here these problems are intimately related to the spectral analysis of the Laplace operator, acting in a Hilbert space of functions defined in the domain adjacent to the grating. 180 pp. Englisch.

The inextricable relationships betw…een the toxic profiles of drugs, the natural history of the diseases for which they are given, and the adverse drug effects that may develop in the course of such diseases are of considerable interest. It is the study of these rather neglected aspects of pharmacology and therapeutics which has formed the basis of this book. An explanation is required of the approach and the style which have been followed. The monograph does not purport to be comprehensive. Only important drug groups which are commonly used in practice are considered. Emphasis has been placed on achieving maximum benefit and safety of the appropriate drugs in the management of common illnesses. When treatment fails, either ab initio or subsequent to an initial response, the risk-benefit relationship of drugs inevitably alters. For this reason the main factors responsible for treatment failure have been considered, with special attention to the possible contribution of or implications for drug therapy in such a situation. Finally, proposals have been put forward for improving the diagnosis and reporting of adverse drug effects. In order to be practical and, as far as possible, constructive it has been necessary for me to 'take a position' on numerous issues. 212 pp. Englisch.

I believe that finite-element collocation holds promise as a numer ical scheme for modeling complicated flows in porous media. However, there seems to be a 'conventional wisdom' maintaining that collocation is hopelessly beset by oscillations and is, in some way, fundamentally inappropriate for multiphase flows. I hope to dispel these objections, realizing that others will remain for further work. The U. S. National Science Foundation funded much of this study through grant number NSF-CEE-8111240. It is expected that these monographs will be particularly useful for the young hospital doctor in training for higher qualifications.
