Cancer Treatment and Research is a series of authoritative volumes that aim to meet this need. It is an attempt to establish a critical mass of oncology literature covering virtually all oncology topics, revised frequently to keep the coverage up to date, easily available on a single library shelf or by a single personal subscription. We have approached the problem in the following fashion: first, by dividing the oncology literature into specific subdivisions such as lung can cer, genitourinary cancer, and pediatric oncology; second, by asking emi nent authorities in each of these areas to edit a volume on the specific topic on an annual or biannual basis. Each topic and tumor type is covered in a volume appearing frequently and predictably, discussing current diagnosis, staging, markers, all forms of treatment modalities, basic biology, and more.

Valuable contributions, towards this end, have been made by scientists from different dis ciplines including biochemistry, physiology, pathology, molecular b…iology and biophysics. We felt that it would be of interest and value to bring together ex perts from diverse specialities to present their work and to discuss the common problems encountered in their endeavours. In accordance, a symposium was organised in February 1988 at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh. It was held during the annual meeting of the Indian section of the International Society for Heart Research. This book is a compila tion of some of the papers presented at the symposium. The symposium was sponsored by the Council on Cardiac Metabolism of the International Society and Federation of Cardiology. A number of Indian or ganisations gave generous financial help. These included the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Indian Council of Medical Research, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and Department of Science and Technology. Desktop publishing was used to prepare this volume. In doing so we came to appreciate the remarkable qualities, skills and help rendered by Professor Dharam Vir. Rapidly converging algorithms are presented in these notes, including convergence analysis in terms of circular regions, and in compl…ex arithmetic. Parallel circular iterations, where the approximations to the zeros have the form of circular regions containing these zeros, are efficient because they also provide error estimates. There are at present no book publications on this topic and one of the aims of this book is to collect most of the algorithms produced in the last 15 years. To decrease the high computational cost of interval methods, several effective iterative processes for the simultaneous inclusion of polynomial zeros which combine the efficiency of ordinary floating-point arithmetic with the accuracy control that may be obtained by the interval methods, are set down, and their computational efficiency is described. The rate of these methods is of interest in designing a package for the simultaneous approximation of polynomial zeros, where automatic procedure selection is desired. The book is both a text and a reference source for mathematicans, engineers, physicists and computer scientists who are interested in new developments and applications, but the material is also accessible to anyone with graduate level mathematical background and some knowledge of basic computational complex analysis and programming. 280 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The ESPRIT Project 1072, DIAMOND (Development and Integration of Accurate Mathematical Operations in Numerical Data-Processing) was carried out from January 1986 through April 1989 by the five partners Siemens Miinchen (prime contra…ctor), CWI Amsterdam, University of Karlsruhe (Institut fiir Ange wandte Mathematik), NAG Oxford and University of Bath (subcontractor to NAG). The technical work was divided into three main work packages with one additional work package for miscellaneous topics. The major goals of this project, according to its title, were to develop a set of accurate numerical algorithms (work package 3) and to provide tools to support their implementation by means of an embedding of accurate arithmetic into programming languages (work package 1) and by transform ation techniques which either improve the accuracy of expression evaluation or detect and eliminate presumable deficiencies in accuracy in existing programs (work package 2). A great variety of working papers describing and discussing the results of these work packages have been written during the collaboration of the project. This book (Accurate Numericlll A 19oritltms) mainly summarizes the results of work package 3, carried through by the two partners Karlsruhe University and NAG Oxford under the leadership of the editors and Dr. G. S. Hodgson. Another book (Improving Floating-Point Programming, J. Tliley, to appear 1989), edited by P.J.L. Wallis, which is one of the DIAMOND project's final deliverables, concentrates more on the fundamental tools. 248 pp. Englisch.

The aim of this book is to describe the essential anatomical basis of a range of common procedures in general and vascular surgery. The large-format multi-volume texts on operative surgery, despite their undoubted excellence, are now too expensive for individual purchase. Single-volume books on operative surgery have been unable to devote sufficient attention to anatomical detail and the surgeon is left ploughing through anatomy texts, often failing to find illustrations which demonstrate clearly the features that are important in an operative dissection. The present text highlights features of the operations which are important anatomically while not attempting to give a complete description of the operative procedure. A combination of line diagrams and cross sections has been used to provide the topographical detail. The volume is aimed mainly at surgeons in training, to help them on a day-to day basis and to provide a text which will be useful in revising for post graduate examinations in surgery. Because of the poor observational basis the ocean general circulation is not well understood. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) which is now underway is an attempt to improve our knowledge of ocean dynamics and thermodynamics on global scales relevant to climate change. Despite those efforts, the oceanic data base is likely to remain scarce and it is crucial to use appropriate methods in order to extract the maximum amount of information from observations. The book contains a thorough analysis of methods to combine data of val'ious types with dynamical concepts, and to assimilate data directly into ocean models. It had its origin as a set of lecture notes prepared for the Ninth Summer School of Mathematical Physics held at Ravello, Italy, in 1984 and was further refined in seminars and lectures give…n primarily at the University of Colorado. The material presented is the product of a single mathematical question raised by Dave Kassoy over ten years ago. This question and its partial resolution led to a successful, exciting, almost unique interdisciplinary col laborative scientific effort. The mathematical models described are often times deceptively simple in appearance. But they exhibit a mathematical richness and beauty that belies that simplicity and affirms their physical significance. The mathe matical tools required to resolve the various problems raised are diverse, and no systematic attempt is made to give the necessary mathematical background. The unifying theme of the monograph is the set of models themselves. This monograph would never have come to fruition without the enthu siasm and drive of Dave Eberly-a former student, now collaborator and coauthor-and without several significant breakthroughs in our understand ing of the phenomena of blowup or thermal runaway which certain models discussed possess.
