Neuware - Although soft tissue sarcomas are rare tumors, representing only ± 1 % of all malignant tumors in adults, they remain a challenge to all disciplines in medical treatment and research. Apart from research in all fields of treatment, soft tissue sarcomas are also encountered in several forms of comb…ined modality treatment. Since the appearance of the first volume on soft tissue sarcomas in this series (Soft Tissue Sarcomas, Laurence H. Baker, ed., Martinus Nijhoff Publishers, 1983), a large amount of data has emerged from preclinical as well as clinical in vestigations. The present volume provides an up-to-date review of the state of the art without duplicating the contents of the earlier volume. In the chapter on pathology it is again indicated that malignant fibrocytic hys tiocytoma is at present the most frequently diagnosed type of soft tissue sarcoma. Nevertheless, sub-typing is less important for the prognosis than grade. Recently, grading has been defined better, permitting a more common use of this prognostic factor. However, the experience of the pathologist is most important for adequate grading. The pathologist will need an adequate biopsy to perform his investiga tions. Cytology is not sufficient for diagnosis. However, for confirmation of metastatic lesions, cytology may provide enough information. Some new tools have been added to the equipment of the pathologist.

Neuware - This book, covering many key aspects of autonomic nervous system maturation, was suggested by the success of a symposium on the developing autonomic nervous system held at the Spring 1982 meeting of the Federation of American Scientists for Experi mental Biology (Federation Proceedings 1983, 42, 1…609). It was obvi ous from the F ASEB symposium that there is increasing interest in the developing autonomic nervous system, particularly with respect to its role in regulating visceral function. Some additional topics that were not covered in the F ASEB symposium are also included in this book. The editor feels that the readers of this volume are, in all probability, already cognizant of the state of knowledge of the adult autonomic nervous system. Therefore, a review of classical autonomic physiology, pharmacology, and neuroanatomy is not provided. For a recent detailed discussion of the ontogeny and phylog eny of the developing nervous system, I would recommend the book published not long ago by D. Purves and J. W. Lichtman, Principles of Neural Development (Sinauer, Sunderland, MA, 1985). Another recent book, Autonomic Nerve Funtion in the Vertebrates by F. Nilsson (Springer-Verlag, New York, 1984), presents a compar ative examination of autonomic nervous system function in verte brates. For a summary of recent advances in the many aspects of catecholamines as they bear on autonomic nervous system re search, I would recommend the series of three books edited by E.

The rotational part of deformation is par ticularly important in the non-linear analysis of thin-walled solid structures such as ~eams, thin-walled bars, plates and shells, since in this case finite rotations may appear even if the strains are infinite simal. It seems that the research concerning the application of finite ro tations is carried out independently in different fields of structural mechanics. Theoretical and numerical methods developed and the results obtained for a particular type of the structure or for a particular ma terial behaviour not always are used to analyse similar problems for other types of structures or for another material behaviour. Since the research in this field had been growing rapidly, it was decided to organize an informal international meeting, under the auspi ces of the European Mechanics Co~mittee, entitled: Euromech Colloquium 197 'Finite Rotations in Structural Mechanics'. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -General Argument My aim is to survey some of the most influential philosophical writers on human nature from the time that Augustine codified Christian belief to the present. During this period philosophical opinions about human nat…ure underwent a transformation from the God-centered views of Augustine and the scholastics to the human-centered ideas of Nietzsche, Freud and Sartre. While one aim has simply been to provide a handy survey, I do have three polemical purposes. One is to oppose the notion that the modernism of more recent writers was produced by methodological innovations. According to both Freud and Sartre, as well as other key figures like Lacan and Heidegger, their views were the product of new methods of investigating human nature, namely those of psychoanalysis and the phenomenological reduction. Psych,oanalysis claimed to use the interpretation of both dreams and the relationship between analyst and patient to penetrate the unconscious. Phenomenology has claimed that trained philosophers are able to obtain a privilege;d view of consciousness by a special act of thought called the phenomenological reduction which enables them to view consciousness without preconceptions. On many issues my sympathies are with Nietzsche rather than with Freud or phenomenology. This is also the case regarding methodology. Nietzsche saw quite clearly that the possibility of popularising the views he himself held came from the decline of ChristianitY. My rejection of exclusive reliance upon the methodologies of psychoanalysis and phenomenology is based on two lines of argument. 272 pp. Englisch.

The third part of the book focuses on logic programming and functional programming.
