The standard courses in the classical differential geometry of curves and surfaces which were given instead (and still are given in some places) have come gradually to be viewed as anachronisms. However, there has been hitherto no unanimous agreement as to exactly how such courses should be brought up to date, that is to say, which parts of modern geometry should be regarded as absolutely essential to a modern mathematical education, and what might be the appropriate level of abstractness of their exposition. Our approach can be described by indicating what distinguishes it from the methodological ideas current in theoretical linguistics, which I consider seriously misguided. Linguists typically construe their task in these days as that of making exceptionless generalizations from particular examples. This explanatory strategy is wrong in several different ways. It presupposes that we can have 'intuitions' about particular examples, usually examples invented by the linguist himself or herself, reliable and sharp enough to serve as a basis of sharp generalizations. It also presupposes that we cannot have equally reliable direct access to general linguistic regularities. Both assumptions appear to me extremely dubious, and the first of them has in effect been challenged by linguists like Dwight Bol inger. There is also some evidence that the degree of unanimity among linguists is fairly low when it comes to less clear cases, even in connection with such relatively simple questions as grammaticality (acceptability). For this reason we have tried to rely more on quotations from contemporary fiction, newspapers and magazines than on linguists' and philosophers' ad hoc examples. In spite of the extraordinary accomplishments of this period, there remained some dissatisfaction with the sequential probability ratio test and Wald's analysis of it. (i) The open-ended continuation region with the concomitant possibility of taking an arbitrarily large number of observations seems intol erable in practice. (ii) Wald's elegant approximations based on 'neglecting the excess' of the log likelihood ratio over the stopping boundaries are not especially accurate and do not allow one to study the effect oftaking observa tions in groups rather than one at a time. (iii) The beautiful optimality property of the sequential probability ratio test applies only to the artificial problem of testing a simple hypothesis against a simple alternative. In response to these issues and to new motivation from the direction of controlled clinical trials numerous modifications of the sequential probability ratio test were proposed and their properties studied-often by simulation or lengthy numerical computation. In the past decade it has become possible to give a more complete theoretical analysis of many of the proposals and hence to understand them better.

The theories of that era reflected this belief and used it in an attempt to explain an increasing number of phenomena. Their physiological basis is less understood; and as concepts, these needs lend themselves more easily to psycho logical than to physiological theorizing. The convergence of evidence from a variety of scholarly efforts suggests that there are three such needs: self-determination, competence, and interpersonal relatedness. This book is primarily about self-determination and competence (with particular emphasis on the former), and about the processes and structures that relate to these needs. The need for interpersonal relat edness, while no less important, remains to be explored, and the findings from those explorations will need to be integrated with the present theory to develop a broad, organismic theory of human motivation. Thus far, we have articulated self-determination theory, which is offered as a working theory-a theory in the making. To stimulate the research that will allow it to evolve further, we have stated self-determination theory in the form of minitheories that relate to more circumscribed domains, and we have developed paradigms for testing predictions from the various minitheories.

The recent exploration of the outer parts of the Solar System by spacecraft focused the attention of a large community of scientists on the problem of ices, which playa major role in the accretionary processes in space except for the close neighborhood of the Sun and of other stars. NATO responded to this new interest by agreeing to sponsor an Advanced Research Workshop 'Ices in the Solar System', provided a proper organizing body could be set up. It was a pleasure to organize such a workshop jointly with Profes sor Roman Smoluchowski who had earlier organized similar conferences. I knew from the experience of others who managed such meetings in the past that there would be much work, but the opportunity of cooperating with Smoluchowski was very attractive and convinced me to agree. If well organized, the whole project promised to be more than rewarding for a large community of scientists, both in the short run and in the long run, by clarifying certain outstanding questions in astrophysics. It became clear that a well-organized international conference would attract top scientists and help unravel many fundamental problems.

Neuware -Nicht nur Neurologen, sondern auch Internisten, Padiater, Psychiater und vor allem Allgemeinpraktiker werden haufig mit Problemen der Abklarung und Behandlung von Anfallkranken konfrontiert. Nach seiner ersten Begegnung mit dem Patienten weiB der Arzt aufgrund der Anamnese oder - ausnahmsweise -aufgrund einer Anfallsbeobachtung iiber die Phanomenologie der Anfalle Bescheid, kennt aber die end giiltige Diagnose noch nicht. Bei der Gestaltung und Einteilung eines Lehrbuches erscheint es deswegen zweckmaBig, stichwortartig die Anfallssymptome und nicht die Diagnose in den Vordergrund zu riicken. Dies habe ich bei der Bearbeitung des V. Kapitels getan, das den Anfallen bei Schulkindern, Jugendlichen und Erwachsenen gewidmet ist. Wegen der starkeren Variabilitat der Anfallsphiinomenologie bei Neugeborenen, Sauglingen und Kleinkindern wurden die Kapitel III und IV in konventioneller Weise nach dem Alter der Patienten und nach den Anfallssyndromen eingeteilt. In anderen Kapiteln wurde eine Reihe von Problemen besprochen, die in den letzten J ahren anlaBlich unserer verschiedenen Epilepsie-Fortbildungsveranstaltungen auf Interesse praktizierender Arzte gestoBen sind. Das Kapitel VIII enthiilt Angaben iiber die gebrauchlichsten Antiepileptika und iiber verschiedene therapeutische Probleme. Selten, vor allem in spezialisierten Kliniken, angewandte, altere Medikamente wurden in diesem fUr Nichtepileptologen bestimm ten Buch nicht beriicksichtigt.
