Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Haemoglobin is one of the most important molecules in the animal kingdom. Its function is to carry oxygen to tissues. In lower invertebrates the blood pigment is present in the haemolymph and is not bound in cells. Later in the course of phylo genesis haemoglobin remains associated with cells whic…h produce it and in this form it reaches the peripheral circulation. In higher organisms the haemoglobin production is thus determined by two main factors: haemoglobin synthesis in erythroid cells and the formation of these erythroid cells which depends on cell proliferation in haematopoietic organs. Human haemoglobin is made up of two chains which combine from four different polypeptide chains formed in varying ratios in different periods of the life cycle. During the life span of humans the following haemoglobins are formed: embryonic haemoglobins Gower 1 and 2, foetal haemoglobin F and two adult haemoglobins A and A . E-and IX-chains are part of the embryonic haemoglobins Gower 1 (E4) and 2 Gower 2 (1X2E2). These haemoglobins predominate in embryos during the second month of pregnancy and at the end of the first trimester they are completely re placed by foetal haemoglobin F (~Y2). Adult haemoglobin A consists of two IX and two ~-chains and is the main component of red cells in adults. A relatively small component of red cells accounting for less than 2 % of the total haemo globin, is haemoglobin A2 (1X0).

(2) Almost all philosophy and sci ences of man share the erroneous work ethic which is the myth of man's evil nature - the myth of the beast in man, the doctrine of original sin. To mediate or to compromise between the first view of human nature as good with the second view of it as evil, sociologists have devised a modified utilitarianism with deferred gratification so called, and the theory of the evil of artificial competition (capitalist and socialist alike) and of keeping up with the Joneses. Now, the mediation is not necessary. For, the polarization makes for abstract errors which are simplistic views of rationality, such as reductionism and positivism of all sorts, as well as for concrete errors, such as the disposition to condemn repeatedly those human weaknesses which are inevitable, namely man's inability to be perfectly rational, avoid all error, etc. , thus setting man against himself as all too wicked.

(2) Only double-blind trials with random allocation of the placebo and experimental drug to preselected patients were considered suitable for discussion, if the blood loss had not been quantitated in a prospective trial. (3) Defmition and appropriate selection of patients admitted to the trial: all inclusion and exclusion criteria used to select patients had to be mentioned in detail. (4) Once included in the trial, patients could be withdrawn only on the basis of strict criteria for withdrawal which had been defined in advance. (5) A double-blind trial had to be continued for an adequate length of time if the haemostatic agent was being assessed in the prevention of bleeding in patients with a long lasting bleeding disorder . (6) A clear and detailed statistical analysis of the results was required. Moreover, a clear distinction between the therapeutic and prophylactic value of the haemostatic agent had to be made and applied separately to the group of patients without any major basic disorder and those with a bleeding disorder e.g. : chronic thrombocytopenia, haemophilia, Rendu-Osler telangiectasia . General statements not substantiated by experimental data, even when issued by well-known authorities, were not considered a reasonable basis for discussion. 168 pp. Englisch.

These notes explore… problems of population genetics and evolution involving stochastic processes. Biological models and various mathematical techniques are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the diffusion method and an attempt is made to emphasize the underlying unity of various problems based on the Kolmogorov backward equation. A particular effort was made to make the subject accessible to biology students who are not familiar with stochastic processes. The references are not exhaustive but were chosen to provide a starting point for the reader interested in pursuing the subject further. Soon after the discovery of a usable contrast medium for the gallbladder examination- 35 years ago - some features of cholecystoses have appeared in publications: Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses and adeno myomatosis. Jutras' display at the Congress in Montreal in 1962, informed the international radiological world of the common basis for the many different manifestations of cholecystoses. Every radiologist is now acquainted with cholecystoses, but as symptoms are sometimes extremely slight - radiological technique must be exact. The aim of this book is to inform the clinician and surgeon on this clinical and radiodiagnostic entity, and to correlate symptoms and signs with the possible need for surgery. In the 17th and 18th centuries, early descriptions of coeliac disease and tropical sprue were published by physicians trained in H…olland, and it was in 1950 that Dicke published his painstaking and vital observations that coeliac disease in children was caused by the inges tion of wheat flour. Subsequent careful work with van de Kamer and Weijers showed that the harmful agent was gluten. Since these discoveries were made, research in intestinal malabsorption, particularly in the adult, has continued in several centres in Holland. At Nijmegen, for example, dr. Cluysenaer, dr. van Tongeren and their as sociates have been involved in long-term studies of patients with intestinal disease for the past fifteen years. In this book they describe their experience of the investigation and treatment of fifty patients with the adult form of coeliac disease. Their monograph gives an account of the history, definition and incidence of the disorder, and then goes on to undertake a critical review of the pathogenesis of the coeliac lesion. Before embarking on the different patterns of malabsorption seen in adult coeliac disease, the authors describe the normal small intestine, its morphology and function. 296 pp. Englisch.
