The book is conceived as a continuation of the classical monograph by N. I. Muskhelishvili into the computer era. Two years have pass…ed since the Russian edition of the present book. We have seen growing interest in numerical simulation of media with internal structure, and have evidence of the potential of the new methods. The evidence was especially clear in problems relating to multiple grains, blocks, cracks, inclusions and voids. This prompted me, when preparing the English edition, to place more emphasis on such topics. The other change was inspired by Professor Graham Gladwell. It was he who urged me to abridge the chain of formulae and to increase the number of examples. Now the reader will find more examples showing the potential and advantages of the analysis. The first chapter of the book contains a simple exposition of the theory of real variable potentials, including the hypersingular potential and the hypersingular equations. This makes up for the absence of such exposition in current textbooks, and reveals important links between the real variable BIE and the complex variable counterparts. The chapter may also help readers who are learning or lecturing on the boundary element method.

Many of the software systems support or supplant human control of safety-critical systems such as flight control systems, space shuttle control systems,… aircraft avionics control systems, robotics, patient monitoring systems, nuclear power plant control systems, and so on. Failure of safety-critical systems could result in great disasters and loss of human life. Therefore, software used for safety critical systems should preserve high assurance properties. In order to comply with high assurance properties, a safety-critical system often shares resources between multiple concurrently active computing agents and must meet rigid real-time constraints. However, concurrency and timing constraints make the development of a safety-critical system much more error prone and arduous. The correctness of software systems nowadays depends mainly on the work of testing and debugging. Testing and debugging involve the process of de tecting, locating, analyzing, isolating, and correcting suspected faults using the runtime information of a system. However, testing and debugging are not sufficient to prove the correctness of a safety-critical system. In contrast, static analysis is supported by formalisms to specify the system precisely. Formal verification methods are then applied to prove the logical correctness of the system with respect to the specification. Formal verifica tion gives us greater confidence that safety-critical systems meet the desired assurance properties in order to avoid disastrous consequences.

In order to…apply optimization methods to a new type of problem, corresponding models and algorithms have to be 'coded' so that they are accessible to a computer. One way to achieve this step is the use of a mod- ing language. Such modeling systems provide an excellent interface between models and solvers, but only for a limited range of model types (in some cases, for example, linear) due, in part, to limitations imposed by the solvers. Furthermore, while m- eling systems especially for heuristic search are an active research topic, it is still an open question as to whether such an approach may be generally successful. Modeling languages treat the solvers as a 'black box' with numerous controls. Due to variations, for example, with respect to the pursued objective or specific problem properties, - dressing real-world problems often requires special purpose methods. Thus, we are faced with the difficulty of efficiently adapting and applying appropriate methods to these problems. Optimization software libraries are intended to make it relatively easy and cost effective to incorporate advanced planning methods in application-specific software systems. A general classification provides a distinction between callable packages, nume- cal libraries, and component libraries.

The expertise represented in the Symposium was accordingly very wide, and many of the world's greatest authorities in their respective fields participated. Given the extensive range and scale of non-homogeneous materials, it had to be focussed to enhance the quality and impact of the Symposium. The range of non-homogeneous materials was limited to those that are inhomogeneous at the macroscopic level and/or exhibit strain softening. The issues of micro to macro scaling were not excluded even within this restricted range which covered materials such as rock, concrete, ceramics and composites on the one hand, and, on the other, those metallic materials whose ductile fracture is strongly influenced by the presence of inhomogeneities. The Symposium remained focussed on fundamental research issues of practical significance. These issues have many common features among seemingly disparate non-homogeneous materials.

The factthat the zeros and poles of Borcherds products are explicitly given in terms of Heegner divisors makes them interesting for geometric and arithmetic applications. After the course, we expanded and smoothed out the material presented in the lectures and inte… grated it with the background material that we had prepared for the participants; this volume is the result. As our title implies, our aim in the course and in this text is to treat selected algebraic aspects of the subject of quantum groups. Sev eral of the words in the previous sentence call for some elaboration. First, we mean to convey several points by the term 'algebraic' - that we are concerned with algebraic objects, the quantized analogues of 'classical' algebraic objects (in contrast, for example, to quantized versions of continuous function algebras on compact groups); that we are interested in algebraic aspects of the structure of these objects and their representations (in contrast, for example, to applications to other areas of mathematics); and that our tools will be drawn primarily from noncommutative algebra, representation theory, and algebraic geometry. Second, the term 'quantum groups' itself. This label is attached to a large and rapidly diversifying field of mathematics and mathematical physics, originally launched by developments around 1980 in theoretical physics and statistical me chanics. It is a field driven much more by examples than by axioms, and so resists attempts at concise description (but see Chapter 1. 1 and the references therein). 348 pp. Englisch.

Cytokines and melanoma antigens may be used either in vivo as a vaccine to stimulate irnrnune immune cell cell function or ex vivo to stimulate or proliferate cells for infusion. Alternatively, alteration in melanoma cell growth can occur through inhibition of protein signal transduction pathways within melanoma cells or in the endothelial cells constituting the necessary angiogenic support for tumor growth. The great promise of these therapies and their cellular targets constitutes the basis for Melanoma: Biologically Targeted Therapeutics. THE CLINlCAL PROBLEM More than four million people will be diagnosed with melanoma in the first decade of the 21st century. Half of those who will die will be individuals who would otherwise have had a life expectancy of another 25 years or more. These individuals will die of systemic systernic metastases, which are present at the time of primary surgery. Despite use of sunscreens, incidence continues to increase in developed countries worldwide. To reduce mortality, there must continue to be a focus on prevention and earlier detection through public education.
