It offers the opportunity to study fantasy mate rial of psychotic and schizophrenic adolescents, as well as patients in other diagnostic categories.

The goal of the Conference was to survey the main developments of co…ntrol theory in economics, by emphasizing particularly new achievements in the analysis of dynamic economic models by con trol methods. The development of control theory is strictly related to the development of science and technology in the last forty years. Control theory was indeed applied mainly in engineering, and only in the sixties economists started using control methods for analys ing economic problems, even if some preliminary economic applica tions of calculus of variations, from which control theory was then developed, date back to the twenties. Applications of control theory in economics also had to solve new, complicated, problems, like those encountered in optimal growth models, or like the determination of the appropriate inter temporal social welfare function, of the policy horizon and the relative final state of the system, of the appropriate discount factor. Furthermore, the uncertainty characterizing economic models had to be taken into account, thus giving rise to the development of stochastic control theory in economics.

The basic idea is to compute the trace of the iterated resolvent kernel of the hyperbolic Lapl…acian in order to arrive at the logarithmic derivative of the Selberg zeta-function. Previous knowledge of the Selberg trace formula is not assumed. The theory is developed for arbitrary real weights and for arbitrary multiplier systems permitting an approach to known results on classical automorphic forms without the Riemann-Roch theorem. The author's discussion of the Selberg trace formula stresses the analogy with the Riemann zeta-function. For example, the canonical factorization theorem involves an analogue of the Euler constant. Finally the general Selberg trace formula is deduced easily from the properties of the Selberg zeta-function: this is similar to the procedure in analytic number theory where the explicit formulae are deduced from the properties of the Riemann zeta-function. Apart from the basic spectral theory of the Laplacian for cofinite groups the book is self-contained and will be useful as a quick approach to the Selberg zeta-function and the Selberg trace formula. 192 pp. Englisch.

A paper of Van…der Pol in the Philosophical Magazine of 1926 started up the investigation of this highly nonlinear type of oscillation for which Van der Pol coined the name 'relaxation oscillation'. The study of relaxation oscillations requires a mathematical analysis which differs strongly from the well-known theory of almost linear oscillations. In this monograph the method of matched asymptotic expansions is employed to approximate the periodic orbit of a relaxation oscillator. As an introduction, in chapter 2 the asymptotic analysis of Van der Pol's equation is carried out in all detail. The problem exhibits all features characteristic for a relaxation oscillation. From this case study one may learn how to handle other or more generally formulated relaxation oscillations. In the survey special attention is given to biological and chemical relaxation oscillators. In chapter 2 a general definition of a relaxation oscillation is formulated. 240 pp. Englisch.

In earlier clinical studies an oral preparation with poor absorption in a low dosage resulted in inadequate therapeutic results. The presently used par…enteral administration in a dosage range of up to 250 mg/kg BW however allowed us to appreciate several unique properties of this drug which make it valuable in the treatment of serious bacterial infections. Due to its small molecular weight and complete lack of protein binding a favorable penetration in tissues and deep compartments (e.g., meninges, bone, heart valves) was observed. In addition fosfomycin shows a remarkably low toxicity and even protects from the nephrotoxigenic effects of aminoglycosides and other drugs. Earlier problems in antimicrobial susceptibility testing have been solved by addition of glucose 6 phosphate into the growth medium. Fosfomycin, the first representative of a completely new class of antibiotics does not show cross-resistance with other antibiotics; therefore pathogens of nosocomial infections, particularly methicillin- und gentamicin-resistant staphylococci are mostly susceptible to this antibiotic. Clinical investigations show a favorable therapeutic outcome in severe nosocomial infections despite of previous therapeutic approaches with various other potent antibiotics. In an international symposium in Mexico City the available clinical experience with this drug was presented and indications for the use of this antibiotic were established. Prof Dr. K. H. It was a great pleasure for the organizers to see, in Uppsala, so man…y old and new friends, all brought together by our common interest in the fascinating field of Amine Oxidases. The Workshop was the successor of a long row of successful predecessors to start with the 1972 meeting in Cagliari, Sardinia, and recently preceded by the first meeting of Workshop design, held in Cambridge 1984. Several of the previous meetings have been dedicated to distinguished senior research workers within the field. To start this Workshop a memorial lecture was given. This lecture, given by Prof. T. P. Singer, was dedicated to the late Prof. K. Kamijo, who was one of the pioneers of what is now worldwide interest in Amine Oxidases and who organized the superb meeting in Hakone 1981. To the great honour of all the participants the family of the late Prof. Kamijo visited the Workshop. Abstracts of all the presentations have been published as a Supplement of Acta Pharmacologica et Toxicologica (Copenhagen). 148 pp. Englisch.

Principles of content addressing, if thoroughly understood, can thereby be applied effectively using standard components. On the other hand, mass storage based on associative principles still exists only in the long term plans of computer technologists. This situation is somewhat confused by the fact that certain expectations are held for the development of new storage media such as optical memories and 'spin glasses' (metal alloys with low-density magnetic impurities). Their technologies, however, may not ripen until after 'fifth generation' computers have been built. It seems that software methods for content addressing, especially those based on hash coding principles, are still holding their position firmly, and a few innovations have been developed recently. As they need no special hardware, one might expect that they will spread to a wide circle of users. This monograph is based on an extensive literature survey, most of which was published in the First Edition. I have added Chap. , which contains a review of more recent work. This updated book now has references to over 1200 original publications. In the editing of the new material, I received valuable help from Anneli HeimbUrger, M. The basic idea is to compute the trace of the iterated resolvent kernel of the hyperbolic Laplaci…an in order to arrive at the logarithmic derivative of the Selberg zeta-function. Previous knowledge of the Selberg trace formula is not assumed. The theory is developed for arbitrary real weights and for arbitrary multiplier systems permitting an approach to known results on classical automorphic forms without the Riemann-Roch theorem. The author's discussion of the Selberg trace formula stresses the analogy with the Riemann zeta-function. For example, the canonical factorization theorem involves an analogue of the Euler constant. Finally the general Selberg trace formula is deduced easily from the properties of the Selberg zeta-function: this is similar to the procedure in analytic number theory where the explicit formulae are deduced from the properties of the Riemann zeta-function. In earlier clinical studies an oral preparation with poor absorption in a low dosage resulted in inadequate therapeutic results. The presently used parente…ral administration in a dosage range of up to 250 mg/kg BW however allowed us to appreciate several unique properties of this drug which make it valuable in the treatment of serious bacterial infections. Due to its small molecular weight and complete lack of protein binding a favorable penetration in tissues and deep compartments (e.g., meninges, bone, heart valves) was observed. In addition fosfomycin shows a remarkably low toxicity and even protects from the nephrotoxigenic effects of aminoglycosides and other drugs. Earlier problems in antimicrobial susceptibility testing have been solved by addition of glucose 6 phosphate into the growth medium. Fosfomycin, the first representative of a completely new class of antibiotics does not show cross-resistance with other antibiotics; therefore pathogens of nosocomial infections, particularly methicillin- und gentamicin-resistant staphylococci are mostly susceptible to this antibiotic. Clinical investigations show a favorable therapeutic outcome in severe nosocomial infections despite of previous therapeutic approaches with various other potent antibiotics. In an international symposium in Mexico City the available clinical experience with this drug was presented and indications for the use of this antibiotic were established. Prof Dr. K. H.
