Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This book is intended as a practical manual for chemists, biologists and others whose work requires the use of pH or metal-ion buffers. Much information on buffers is scattered throughout the literature and it has been our endeavour to select data and instructions likely to be helpful in the choice of suitable buffer substances and for the preparation of appropriate solutions. For details of pH measurement and the preparation of standard acid and alkali solutions the reader is referred to a companion volume, A. Albert and E. P. Serjeant's The Determination of Ionization Constants (1971). Although the aims of the book are essentially practical, it also deals in some detail with those theoretical aspects considered most helpful to an understanding of buffer applications. We have cast our net widely to include pH buffers for particular purposes and for measurements in non-aqueous and mixed solvent systems. In recent years there has been a significant expansion in the range of available buffers, particularly for biological studies, largely in conse quence of the development of many zwiUerionic buffers by Good et al. (1966). These are described in Chapter 3.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 188 pp. Englisch.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -Very few people have contributed as much to twentieth-century physics as Julian Schwinger. It is therefore appropriate to offer a retrospective of his work on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday (February 12, 1978). We hope, in offering this selection of his papers, to bring to light ideas and results that may have been partly overlooked at the time of the original publication. Schwinger has published prodigiously on a great variety of subjects, as is evident from the comprehensive list of publications arranged in chronological order which appears on p. xiii. Needless to say, only a small subset could be included in the present modest volume. In the selection, great weight was assigned to papers that seem to be less widely known or appreciated than they deserve. Many important papers are therefore omitted. (Examples: Paper [64] 'On Gauge Invariance and Vacuum Polarization' and Paper [69] 'On Angular Momentum', both of which have been reprinted elsewhere. ) The collection is a personal one, having been chosen by Schwinger himself, and is therefore of particular interest. It would probably not be interesting to offer an analysis, by the editors, of Schwinger's contributions to physics. However, we are very pleased to be able to include Schwinger's own informal and very personal comments about each article that appears in this volume. These comments indicate his reasons for choosing these particular articles and, in many cases, provide a capsule synopsis of what he considers most valuable.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 444 pp. Englisch.

Residential segregation limits the possibilities for contaets between whites and blaeks, and as a result, deereases the potential for social unity. Resi dential segregation has been seen to lead to a sense of eonfinement among ghetto residents which exaeerbates alI the other problems that affeet these neighborhoods. As a result, the spatial separation of the raees has been viewed as a serious threat to the stability of the society (U. S. National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, 1968: vii). Spatial separation also leads to other specific problems sueh as de laclo sehool segregation, while segregated sehools have been declared inherently unequal. Furthermore, the movement of blaeks to the suburbs that has oecurred in 2 recent years has not led to decreased patterns of isolation. Instead, this shift has refleeted an expansion of existing ghetto areas aeross city bounda ries. For example, Cleveland's black ghetto has expanded into and through East Cleveland which is a distinct municipality; (see Arthur D. Little, 1969) and Washington, D. C. 's ghetto has expanded northeast into suburban Prinee Georges County (Zehner and Chapin, 1974). 3 Glantz and Delaney (1973) in a study of 14 ofthe 18largest metropolitan are as, found that the degree of segregation of blacks within particular suburban municipalities had not changed much between 1969 and 1970. Blacks were coneentrated in the same suburban eommunities in 1970 as in 1960.

Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -In the past decade there has been a significant change in the freshman/ sophomore mathematics curriculum as taught at many, if not most, of our colleges. This has been brought about by the introduction of linear algebra into the curriculum at the sophomore level. The advantages of using linear algebra both in the teaching of differential equations and in the teaching of multivariate calculus are by now widely recognized. Several textbooks adopting this point of view are now available and have been widely adopted. Students completing the sophomore year now have a fair preliminary under standing of spaces of many dimensions. It should be apparent that courses on the junior level should draw upon and reinforce the concepts and skills learned during the previous year. Unfortunately, in differential geometry at least, this is usually not the case. Textbooks directed to students at this level generally restrict attention to 2-dimensional surfaces in 3-space rather than to surfaces of arbitrary dimension. Although most of the recent books do use linear algebra, it is only the algebra of ~3. The student's preliminary understanding of higher dimensions is not cultivated.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 276 pp. Englisch.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This book originated from a series of papers which were published in 'Die Naturwissenschaften' in 1977178. Its division into three parts is the reflection of a logic structure, which may be abstracted in the form of three theses: A. Hypercycles are a principle of natural selforganization allowing an inte gration and coherent evolution of a set of functionally coupled self-rep licative entities. B. Hypercycles are a novel class of nonlinear reaction networks with unique properties, amenable to a unified mathematical treatment. C. Hypercycles are able to originate in the mutant distribution of a single Darwinian quasi-species through stabilization of its diverging mutant genes. Once nucleated hypercycles evolve to higher complexity by a process analogous to gene duplication and specialization. In order to outline the meaning of the first statement we may refer to another principle of material selforganization, namely to Darwin's principle of natural selection. This principle as we see it today represents the only understood means for creating information, be it the blue print for a complex living organism which evolved from less complex ancestral forms, or be it a meaningful sequence of letters the selection of which can be simulated by evolutionary model games.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 104 pp. Englisch.

The contributions selected explore new directions of research at the borderline between two established research traditions: systems of innovation and environmental innovations. For this purpose, the book draws on recent conceptual and empirical insights as well as on policy-oriented analyses. It is structured according to the four main areas of interest with respect to environmental innovation systems: conceptual foundations, empirical experiences, strategic approaches, and experiences with policy instruments.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 334 pp. Englisch.

Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -For Louis Pasteur, the two distinctive properties of dissymmetric systems, optical activity and chiral discrimination, provided prime evidence for a Divine origin to the universe. Handedness appeared to be built into the macrocosm of the galaxies, each with a non-superposable mirror image by virtue of its rotation, as well as the microcosm of each molecule of most natural products. The best that the chemist in the laboratory could accomplish appeared to be the synthesis of the detordu internally-compensated meso-form and, as Pasteur ultimately came to admit, the externally-compensated racemic form. In the latter case the chemist generated not merely one but two chiral structures, although parity, and secondary symmetry generally, seemed to be conserved in the enantiomer antipode pair. The cosmic element in the Pasteur tradition received an augmentation in secular form from demonstrations of the non conservation of parity in the weak interactions, and from the discovery of net circularity in the extra-terrestrial photons, such as those from the less-distant planets, particularly the photons from the Jupiter red-spot. The development of the photoacoustic circular analysers a decade ago was received in fact with as much enthusiasm by the astronomers as by the chemists. It would be just to add, however, that the majority of these circular analysers are now to be found, not in the observatories, but in the physical and chemistry laboratories devoted to the molecular aspects of the Pasteur tradition.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 388 pp. Englisch.

In other dogs, lateral sutures (running) consisting of ab sorbable material made from polyglycolic acid were inserted. No occlusions, aneurysms, or infections occurred in the arteries. Without heparin, the patency rate after up to 234 days was 98%. In veins, the observation period was 60 days and a patency rate of 83% was found. All vessels were studied by angiography and by light and electron microscopy. Additionally, an original method of hemodynamic assessment was used (Turbulence Index). The al ternating effect of morphological variations in the vessel wall and the degree of blood flow disturbance was evident. Literatur 1. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Anatomy to most people is a subject which suggests the cutting up of dead bodies (the word literally means cutting up). In addition it is generally known that Vesalius published a book in 1543 in which much of the human body was described in detail and more or less accurately. A subject which is dead and ancient fre quently has little appeal especially if it appears to involve learning a large amount of factual information. For many years anatomy has had to struggle with these disadvantages and at times one has had the impression that there is almost a conspiracy on the part of everyone to suggest that anatomy is unnecessary. There is no doubt, however that a knowledge of the structures of the body, for that is what anatomy is, whether it is what can be seen with the naked eye or with different kinds of microscope, is an essential preliminary and corollary to the understanding of the functions of the body. It was no historical accident that Vesalius, the anatomist, preceded Harvey, the physiologist. No apology need be made for trying to present the basic facts of anatomy to anyone interested in the human body and to members of any profession which will have to cope with the physical and mental problems of children, men and women in health and in sickness. It is not intended that the reader should know every thing contained in this book. 296 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The springboard for this sixth volume in the Industry and Health Care series was a conference sponsored by the Center for Industry and Health Care of Boston University on June 9 and 10, 1978. That conference had a gradual genesis. Over a year ago we spent some time with Kevin Stokeld of Deere and Company and heard his views on self-insurance and self-administration as one device for a corporation to achieve better management control of its health benefit. More recent discussions with representatives of American Telephone and Telegraph Company and other corporations made it increasingly clear to us that management's need for data to monitor the use of employee health benefits was emerging as a critical policy issue. Subsequent meetings with executives at John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston and Mobil Oil Corporation in New York, among others, convinced us that simple answers would be elusive or inadequate and that there was a need for an objective and careful look at the evolving relationships between employee health benefits, claims administration, health services utilization, and corpo rate health care cost containment programs. Since self-funding and particularly self-administration represent a fun damental change in the traditional insurance relationship, the conference was convened to explore the advantages and disadvantages of self-insurance for employee health benefits, with some attention to claims production but with special emphasis on the originating question of data for effective management of an employee health benefit. 192 pp. Englisch.

This introductory chapter attempts to provide an over view of the material and ideas covered. The presentation is loose and fragmentary, and should be read lightly initially. Subsequent perusal from time to time may help tie the mat erial together and provide a unity less readily obtainable otherwise. The detailed presentation begins in Chapter 1, and some readers may prefer to begin there directly.O.l. Time-Reversibility and Spectral Representation. Continuous time chains may be discussed in terms of discrete time chains by a uniformizing procedure (2.l) that simplifies and unifies the theory and enables results for discrete and continuous time to be discussed simultaneously. Thus if N(t) is any finite Markov chain in continuous time governed by transition rates vmn one may write for pet) = [Pmn(t)] - P[N(t) = n I N(O) = m] pet) = exp [-vt(I - a )] (0.1.1) v where v > Max r v ' and mn m n law ~ 1 - v-I \* Hence N(t) where is governed r vmn Nk = NK(t) n K(t) is a Poisson process of rate v indep- by a ' and v dent of N - k Time-reversibility (1.32.42.S) is important for many reasons. A) The only broad class of tractable chains suitable for stochastic models is the time-reversible class. 204 pp. Englisch.

These comments indicate his reasons for choosing these particular articles and, in many cases, provide a capsule synopsis of what he considers most valuable. 444 pp. Englisch.

(1966). These are described in Chapter 3. 188 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the past decade there has been a significant change in the freshman/ sophomore mathematics curriculum as taught at many, if not most, of our colleges. The student's preliminary understanding of higher dimensions is not cultivated. 276 pp. Englisch.
