And any such discussion of the distinction between ethology and comparative psychology would today seem patently absurd. While there may be differences in outlook, no boundaries exist. But when Frank Beach started in research, that was not the case. Comparative psychology flourished in the United States whereas ethology was unknown. Beach started as a comparative psychologist and has always called himself either that or a behavioral endocrinologist. Yet, among the com parative psychologists of his generation, he has had closer links with the initially European ethologists than almost any other. He was indeed one of the editors of the first volume of Behaviour. That this should have been so is not surprising once one knows that his Ph. D. thesis concerned 'The Neural Basis for Innate Behavior,' that he used to sleep in the laboratory so that he could watch mother rats giving birth, and that in 1935 he was using model young to analyze maternal behavior. Furthermore, for nine years he worked in the American Museum of Natural History-in a department first named Experimental Biology and later, when Beach had saved it from extinction and become its chairman, the Department of Animal Behavior. If reason is to rule, as Aristotle points out,l the most architectonic of the sciences, that is political science, should rule. It is political philosophy which must determine the nature of the arts which will help or which will hinder the good of the city or the polity. That does not mean that a mere professor should stand in judgment of Shake speare, Bacon, and Rembrandt. Their results contribute to expanding our knowledge and give us a new insight into the sphere of metal fatigue which is a highly interdiscipline field. This makes the continuous amending and modifying of books on metal fatigue a necessity, unfortunately often related with the not easy task of changing one's opinions and critical analysis of established earlier notions. These aims were my chief concern when preparing the present edition of my book in which I made use of carefully selected new information from 1972-1973 and partly 1974 reports. This new matter has been included in many instances just to signal new facts or findings, since the limited space did not allow me to give them the amount of consideration they deserve. The book has been further supplemented with the results of micrographic studies conducted in co-operation with J. Kozubowski for which lowe him special thanks. I am also indebted to Mr. H. The walls of the ventricular system in the brain show regional specializations termed circumventricular organs. Despite the fact that these organs have been sufficiently described morphologically, a convincing functional concept is lacking, especially in rela tion to adjacent nervous centers and to the cerebrospinal fluid. In vitro experimenta tion allows isolated analysis of circumventricular organs without interaction of other neuronal or humoral influences. Three avian circumventricular organs were selected for the present in vitro study: 1. choroid plexus, 2. glycogen body, and 3. pineal organ, all having the advantage of being anatomically well defined and therefore suited-for clean and easy isolation. Each of these represents an individual case with special prob-' lems for study in organ or cell culture. 1.1. Choroid Plexus In cultures of the choroid plexus the lack of vascular supply eliminates an important functional component which determines in vivo the polar organization of the plexus epithelium. Therefore, tissue culture studies are limited to processes occurring at the apical surface of the cell and focussed on the interaction between the cell and the culture medium. Choroid plexus from the lateral ventricles of 18 day-old chick em bryos were cultured successfully for up to 120 days in medium 199. The First European Population Seminar took place in September of World Population Year 1974 in Karpacz, Poland and had as its topic 'Urbanization and Population Growth in Europe' . A grant from the United Nations Fund for Population Aetivities made organizing this first seminar possible. In December 1976 the Seeond European Population Seminar was held in the Hague, The Netherlands. The ehoiee of topie for this seminar was a eombination of themes from the World Population Year 1974 and the International Women' s Year 1975. In both the World Population Plan as adopted at the World Population Conferenee in Bucharest and the World Plan of Action of the World Conferenee of the International Women's Year in Mexieo City, one finds the point of departure that a relation exists between demographie phenomena and the status of women. The subjeet of the seeond seminar was therefore formulated as: 'Demographie Aspeets of the Changing Status of Women in Europe' . This symposium was devoted to pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, analytic procedures, blood level determinations, and their interpretation both for thera peutic and toxic situations. Considerable progress has been made during the last years in this area of digitalis research. The time was suitable for a critical reap praisal of facts and theories and for future planning. Our main intention was to relate analytic data and biochemical findings to clinical problems and questions. Despite the undoubtedly basic character of clinical pharmacology, it is neverthe less an applied science which should help to develop the rational basis of thera peutics. I still have the sheet, and quote a couple of the arguments here to give the idea. - If you throw switch S and switch T, the motor will start. Therefore, John will pass history. The disconcerting thing about these inferences is, of course, that under the customary truth-functional interpretation of and, or, not, and if-then, they are supposed to be valid. What, if anything, is wrong At first I was not disturbed by the examples. Having at that time consider able personal commitment to rationality in general and formal logic in par ticular, I felt it my duty and found myself easily able (or so I thought) to explain away most of them. When a drug, however, has so many attractive facets, it seems proper and aJvis able for the success of a scientific meeting to focus on a number of well-defined aspects. This symposium was devoted to pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, analytic procedures, blood level determinations, and their interpretation both for thera peutic and toxic situations. Considerable progress has been made during the last years in this area of digitalis research. The time was suitable for a critical reap praisal of facts and theories and for future planning. Our main intention was to relate analytic data and biochemical findings to clinical problems and questions. Despite the undoubtedly basic character of clinical pharmacology, it is neverthe less an applied science which should help to develop the rational basis of thera peutics. We are particularly grateful to the active participants who bore the burden of preparing presentations and - even worse - manuscripts. What, if anything, is wrong At first I was not disturbed by the examples. Having at that time consider able personal commitment to rationality in general and formal logic in par ticular, I felt it my duty and found myself easily able (or so I thought) to explain away most of them.
