In Chapter 2 we start integrating differential forms of degree one along curves in Rn. This already allows some applications of the ideas of Chapter 1. This material is not used in the rest of the book. In Chapter 3 we present the basic notions of differentiable manifolds. It is useful (but not essential) that the reader be familiar with the notion ofa regular surface in R3. In Chapter 4 we introduce the notion of manifold with boundary and prove Stokes theorem and Poincare's lemma. Starting from this basic material, we could follow any of the possi ble routes for applications: Topology, Differential Geometry, Mechanics, Lie Groups, etc. We have chosen Differential Geometry. While the first two Conferences have dealt essentially with high temperature alloys for gas turbines (COST 50), the third and fourth Conferences held in 1986 and 1990 were concerned with a broader range of topics, including the work of the third round of COST-50 (1972-1983), that of COST-50l, which was initiated in 1981 and COST 505 (1983-1990).

Basically, the calculations only involved rational expressions,…but they turned out to be extremely complicated, because the third and fourth order terms had to be included. After several months of filling whole blocks of paper with for mulas, I was close to resignation. But, by a lucky incident, I met a colleague who showed me the computer algebra package Reduce. It still required a lot of patience and tricks, but Reduce finally did produce the desired results. After this experience, I wondered, why only a few engineers and scientists were aware of the strengths of such computer algebra programs. The mathematical treatment of scientific problems often leads to calculations which can only be solved 'by hand' with a considerable investment of time, while a suitable com puter algebra program produces the solution within a couple of seconds or min utes. Even if a closed symbolic solution is not possible, such programs can often simplify a problem, before the cruder tool of numerical simulations is applied. 430 pp. Englisch.

The haematoxylin- and eosin-stained section remains the mainstay of morphological diag nosis, but special histochemical stains are often helpful and have been referred to in the explanatory notes. Readers interested in specific special stains mentioned in the text should consult Labora tory Methods in Histotechnology of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, D. c., USA. 1 The results of immunohisto chemical methods for identifying various tumour 'markers' have also been noted whenever indicated. The present classification incorporates all the previously classi fied tumours, but also includes several new lesions, viz. biliary papil lomatosis, the fibrolamellar variant of hepatocellular carcinoma and epithelioid haemangioendothelioma. Several subtypes of hepato blastoma are mentioned. A serous type of bile duct cystadenoma is described. The section on tumour-like lesions has been expanded to include focal fatty change and inflammatory pseudotumour. The section on adenomatous hyperplasia, including macroregenerative nodules, has been amplified. The number of photomicrographs has been increased from the original 56 to 150. Unlike the first edition, the photomicrographs in the second edition are mostly black and white. The last venue was held in Berlin, Germany, on September 20th, 1993. The success of this workshop encouraged the major European experts in the field to contribute to this volume. Published in the ESPRIT Research Report series, it presents the results of advanced European research on speech technologies and its applications in the multilingual framework of the European Union. Speech is an important factor in building an integrated European communication platform. Strong links exist between speech and natural language processing, and human computer interaction. Recent experimental results on multilingual conversion between both speech and text show the advantage of integrating phonetic, lexical, and syntactic knowledge, and also demonstrate the feasibility of multilingual voice systems in the human-computer interface applications. Multilingual queries use natural language-based co-operative dialogue as an interface to the computer services in the information applications. Continuous and robust speech understanding is here addressed for both speaker-independent and speaker-adaptive processing, together with dialogue modelling and manage ment. Such technologies are then used in the design of computer workstations with a speech-based human interface for a large range variety of information technology applications (e.g. in the office, telecommunications, and computer aided education). 332 pp. Englisch.

This is easilyunderstandable because we observe the rapid progress of a relatively young branch ofmathematics, ofwhich… the first results date back to about 30 years ago. By now, impressive results have been achieved both in the theory ofsolving ill-posed problems and in the applicationsofalgorithms using modem computers. To mention just one field, one can name the computer tomography which could not possibly have been developed without modem tools for solving ill-posed problems. When writing this book, the authors tried to define the place and role of ill posed problems in modem mathematics. In a few words, we define the theory of ill-posed problems as the theory of approximating functions with approximately given arguments in functional spaces. The difference between well-posed and ill posed problems is concerned with the fact that the latter are associated with discontinuous functions. This approach is followed by the authors throughout the whole book. We hope that the theoretical results will be of interest to researchers working in approximation theory and functional analysis. As for particular algorithms for solving ill-posed problems, the authors paid general attention to the principles ofconstructing such algorithms as the methods for approximating discontinuous functions with approximately specified arguments. In this way it proved possible to define the limits of applicability of regularization techniques. 272 pp. Englisch.
