Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The first three volumes of this series have dealt with materials which generally justify the title, The Biology of Alcoholism. This is only remotely true of the present volume, Social Aspects of Alcoholism, or of the final volume to come, Treatment and Rehabilitation. Except for small portions of the treatment section which involve pharmacotherapy, much of these last two volumes deals with the psychological aspects of alcoholism and still more with the social. It is interesting to review the evolution of this new pattern over the past seven years, a pattern which, had it existed initially, would have resulted, if not in a dif ferent format, at least in a different title. Our initial selection of areas to be covered was influenced by our desire to present as 'hard' data as possible, in an attempt to lend a greater aura of scientific rigor to a field which was generally considered as 'soft. ' When we completed our review of this material in volumes 1-3, we recognized that what we might have gained in rigor, we had more than lost in completeness. These volumes presented a picture of a biological disease syndrome for which the remedies and preventive measures were presumably also biological. And yet, most workers in the field readily accept the significant contributions of psychological and social factors to the pathogenesis and treatment of alcoholism.

The multipliCity of these, however, raised so many new problems that it was logical that the 1975 meeting at Lausanne should be concerned with ways in which differences in abundance affect both spectral types and photometric indices. Commissions 29 and 36 joined with Commission 45 in sponsoring this Symposium. Since the date of the meeting came shortly after the formal retirement of Professor William W. Morgan from the University of Chicago, it was quickly agreed that this meeting should be dedicated to him in recognition of his unique contributions to spectral classification. In the opening paper of the Symposium Dr. Bengt Stromgren has summarized these. To his remarks we should add only that it was about 1940 that Morgan first distinguished the group of G- and K-type stars with weak CN bands and metallic lines - stars which have since been recognized as having the abundance of all metals relative to hydrogen much lower than in stars of the solar population. Spectra of two of these, HD 81192 (Boss 2527) and 8 Lep, were later shown as examples of the group in the Yerkes Atlas of 1943.

What I have tried to do in the following pages is to reconstruct the system behind the often rather disconnected commentary, and to show that when the theory emerges, most of the harsh criticism which has been directed against these re marks is seen to be without foundation. The aim of semiempirical methods mainly lies in a semiquantitative classification of electronic pro perties and in the search for regularities within given classes of larger molecules. Here blood vessels and kidney tubules are accessible to direct microscopic observation. This situation has been used to elucidate kidney functions under normal and pathological conditions. A number of observations on function in the intact kidney can be made through the microscope. We can observe the flow of blood in the renal microcirculation on the cortical surface. We can identify proximal and distal tubules, and measure their widths. We can follow the flow of tubular fluid with the use of dyes. We can watch fluid reabsorption in tubular segments isolated by oil droplets. With photography, these observations can be recorded and quantitated. In this monograph, we will survey the methods and results of in vivo microscopy of the kidney cortex. We will consider the advantages and limitations of these methods, and discuss their contributions to our understanding of kidney physiology. To me it has been of interest as an orientation in a world of traditional German thinking, best known from Goethe's natural philosophy of perceptible 'Ur bilder', which perhaps in English could be rendered descriptively by calling it an inner vision of further irre ducible totalities. It is in contemporary language a kind of intuitive 'holistic' insight which represents understanding different from that of natural science. The latter is devoted to the study of causal chains, is largely experimental and in its aim ultimately 'reduc tionist' -to use another modern term. Goethe's approach is reincarnated in the 'Wesenslehre' of the late Ludwig Klages (1872-1956) and in the thinking of Carl Gustav Caruso To Klages the perceived image alone is the meaning of everything in this world and in this sense he is the advocate of a psychological phenom enology that is an end in itself. Originally trained as a chemist Klages soon turned to philosophy and de veloped a system of concepts supposed to give a deeper insight into the essence of life than did the endless causal chains of natural science. Here blood vessels and kidney tubules are accessible to direct microscopic observation. This situation has been used to elucidate kidney functions under normal and pathological conditions. A number of observations on function in the intact kidney can be made through the microscope. We can observe the flow of blood in the renal microcirculation on the cortical surface. We can identify proximal and distal tubules, and measure their widths. We can follow the flow of tubular fluid with the use of dyes. We can watch fluid reabsorption in tubular segments isolated by oil droplets. With photography, these observations can be recorded and quantitated. In this monograph, we will survey the methods and results of in vivo microscopy of the kidney cortex. We will consider the advantages and limitations of these methods, and discuss their contributions to our understanding of kidney physiology. A general discussion of kidney function may be found in Ref. [127]. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The general discussions of the roles of photometric and spectroscopic classification at Cordoba in 1971 (lAU Symposium No. 50), and of the calibration of classification indices at Geneva in 1972 (IAU Symposium No. 54), revealed clearly the steadily in creasing importance of abundance parameters. The multipliCity of these, however, raised so many new problems that it was logical that the 1975 meeting at Lausanne should be concerned with ways in which differences in abundance affect both spectral types and photometric indices. Commissions 29 and 36 joined with Commission 45 in sponsoring this Symposium. Since the date of the meeting came shortly after the formal retirement of Professor William W. Morgan from the University of Chicago, it was quickly agreed that this meeting should be dedicated to him in recognition of his unique contributions to spectral classification. In the opening paper of the Symposium Dr. Bengt Stromgren has summarized these. To his remarks we should add only that it was about 1940 that Morgan first distinguished the group of G- and K-type stars with weak CN bands and metallic lines - stars which have since been recognized as having the abundance of all metals relative to hydrogen much lower than in stars of the solar population.
