They are the magni cent full-color photographs returned by the Hubble Space Telescope and 1 its sister Great Observatories of the grand depths of the cosmos. From the 'pillars of creation,'considered to be Hubble's signature image, to the incomprehensible depths of the Hubble Deep Fields to the intricate details imaged in the surface and cloud tops of Mars or Jupiter, the power of the Hubble Telescope to turn on the public to science is unparalled in the history of modern culture. They also have spurred new telescope sales to unimagined highs. And after years of watching the heavens through the eyes of NASA, you've decided it's time to see it for yourself. You make the trip to the department store and pick up that shiny new '500×'te- scope, set it up and soon you're in business. Unfortunately, the high initial expectations usually give way to disappointment. Instead of seeing the magni cent swirling clouds of gas in the Orion Nebula, you see a pale green-gray cloud with a couple of nondescript stars lurking nearby. The swirling red, yellow and brown storms of Jupiter are nowhere to be seen; only varying shades of gray in the planet's cloud bands, assuming you can see bands at all! And Mars After waiting all night for the red planet to rise up over the morning horizon, you are greeted by nothing more than a featureless reddish-orange dot.

It is a story of expanding horizons and the discovery of invisible worlds, made possible with new technology and novel telescopes that have broadened our range of perception and sharpened our vision.Spacecraft have carried men to the Moon, and traveled throughout the Solar System, obtaining close-up views that have transformed the moons and planets from moving points of light to fascinating, diverse worlds. Modern technology has also enabled the detection of giant planets around other stars, taking us one step closer to the possible detection of life outside the Earth.Astronomers have used telescopes, operating at the visible wavelengths that we see with our eye, to reveal the true extent of the Milky Way and discover billions of remote galaxies that are rushing away from us in an expanding Universe. Each of these galaxies contains billions of stars wheeling around their massive central hub.Radio waves and X-rays, which lie beyond the range of visual perception, are used to detect a violent Universe, from exploding stars to gamma ray bursts and the Big Bang itself, with the associated discoveries of pulsars, black holes and quasars. Radio astronomers have also shown that the dark spaces between the stars contain vast tracts of cold hydrogen atoms and a host of molecules.Dark invisible matter has been discovered residing outside the shining stars and galaxies, outweighing them all. And a mysterious dark energy has also been found, which fills the nooks and crannies of seemingly empty space. The Cosmos is evolving, participating in ongoing processes of creation, destruction, and re-birth. But even though we are pushing the boundaries of knowledge closer to an understanding of the origins and destinies, of either the Universe or Life, the ultimate answers to these grand questions still lie hidden behind the Cosmic Veil.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 248 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -This Second Edition of Sun, Earth and Sky updates the popular text by providing comprehensive accounts of the most recent discoveries made by five modern solar spacecraft during the past decade. Their instruments have used sound waves to peer deep into the Sun¿s inner regions and measure the temperature of its central nuclear reactor, and extended our gaze far from the visible Sun to record energetic outbursts that threaten Earth. Breakthrough observations with the underground Sudbury Neutrino Observatory are also included, which explain the new physics of ghostly neutrinos and solve the problematic mismatch between the predicted and observed amounts of solar neutrinos. This new edition of Sun, Earth and Sky also describes our recent understanding of how the Sun¿s outer atmosphere is heated to a million degrees, and just where the Sun¿s continuous winds come from. As humans we are more intimately linked with our life-sustaining Sun than with any other astronomical object, and the new edition therefore provides modern interpretations of ozone depletion and global warming that are related to both the Sun and to human activities. Written in a light and friendly style, this lavishly illustrated book introduces the Sun and its physics, and describes all aspects of the Sun¿s interaction with us on Earth.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 304 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Mounting pressure in the early 1960s from the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to study ways of expanding the role of astronauts to conduct science on future space missions led to NASA¿s conclusion that flying scientifically trained crewmembers would generate greater returns from each mission. NASA and industry studies continued investigating possibilities that could lead to the eventual creation of the first space stations using surplus Apollo hardware, through the Apollo Applications Programme (AAP). There was also a growing interest within the military to create their own manned space station programme, conducting on-orbit experiments and research with strategic advantages for national security. In October 1964 the Soviets launched Voskhod 1 whose 3-man crew were identified as the first ¿scientific passengers¿ in space. A few days later NASA and the NAS had completed joint studies into the possibility of using scientists in the manned space programme, and invited scientists to apply for astronaut training. In selecting the first group of scientist-astronauts, NASA had one firm requirement; any person accepted into the programme would have to qualify as a military jet pilot. While the second group of scientists were completing their academic, survival and flight training programme, the remaining members of the first scientist-astronaut group were involved in supporting the developing Apollo Applications programme and the Apollo lunar programme.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 592 pp. Englisch.

Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -As health care costs soar there is increasing interest in examining what society and, particularly, patients receive in return for these expenditures. Optimizing Health brings together the best thinking from both sides of the Atlantic to explore these issues. It employs disciplinary perspectives from economics, ethics, philosophy, psychology, clinical practice, and epidemiology to explore various ways that value for patients have and can be determined. It concludes with a discussion of changes required in practice, research, and health care systems to maximize the outcomes received from the provision of medical care services from the patient¿s perspective. The first section of the book provides theoretical perspectives from economics and systems thinking that help us to focus on how one might determine the value of medical care for patients. The next section considers the ethical and philosophical dilemmas that face developed countries in distributing medical care. How is justice served and evidence-based medicine employed to increase the value of medical care for patients The section on psychology deals with measuring outcomes from the patient¿s perspective and involving patients in medical decision making. Measuring quality of life and gaining valid quality of life information when patients cannot respond for themselves are important topics covered by these chapters. Other chapters consider ways that patients can become more involved in medical decision making with the expectation that this will increase the value of medical care for patients.A major section of the book about clinical practice discusses problems that can reduce the value to patients of medical care. These include overdiagnosis, aggressive treatments that do not result in better patient outcomes, findings that earlier diagnosis does not always result in better outcomes, and the extent of medical error in treatment. The final sections deal withcost-effectiveness analyses and applications of clinical epidemiology. The chapters include a number of original investigations and applications of new methodologies. All-in-all, the volume is must reading for practitioners, policy makers, and researchers who want to find in one place the state-of-the-art thinking and future directions of valuing medical care from the patient¿s perspective.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 336 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -If people do not believe that mathematics is simple, it is only because they do not realize how complicated life is. ¿John von Neumann While this is a course in analysis, our approach departs from the beaten path in some ways. Firstly, we emphasize a variety of connections to themes from neighboring fields, such as wavelets, fractals and signals; topics typically not included in a gradu ate analysis course. This in turn entails excursions into domains with a probabilistic flavor. Yet the diverse parts of the book follow a common underlying thread, and to gether they constitute a good blend; each part in the mix naturally complements the other. In fact, there are now good reasons for taking a wider view of analysis, for ex ample the fact that several applied trends have come to interact in new and exciting ways with traditional mathematical analysis¿as it was taught in graduate classes for generations. One consequence of these impulses from 'outside' is that conventional boundaries between core disciplines in mathematics have become more blurred. Fortunately this branching out does not mean that students will need to start out with any different or additional prerequisites. In fact, the ideas involved in this book are intuitive, natural, many of them visual, and geometric. The required background is quite minimal and it does not go beyond what is typically required in most graduate programs.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 328 pp. Englisch.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This monograph contains a critical review of 50 years of results on questions of admissibility and minimaxity of estimators of parameters that are restricted to closed convex subsets of R k . It presents results of approximately 300 mostly-published papers on the subject, and points out relationships between them as well as open problems. The book does not touch on the subject of testing hypotheses for such parameter spaces. It does give an overview of known algorithms for computing maximum likelihood estimators under order-restrictions. The book should be valuable as a reference for researchers and graduate students looking for what is known and unknown in the area of restricted parameter-space-estimation. It assumes a good knowledge of decision theory.

We have gained new perspectives on the Universe with the aid of powerful gamma-ray,- ray, and infrared telescopes, whose sensitivitiescould not have been imagined three decades earlier. We have become expert at snaring neutrinos to gain insight on - clear processes at work in the Sun and supernovae. We have direct evidence for the existence of neutron stars and gravitationalwaves, and persuasive arguments for the detection of black holes on scales of individual stars as well as galactic nuclei. Primordial uctuations, remnants from the rst moments in the expansion of the Universe have revealed themselves in the faint ripples marking the microwave sky. These ripples also document the rst appearance of dark matter now known to have dominatedthe formationand evolutionof all cosmic structure. More recently, he has been notable more for his ostracism from Freud¿s sphere and little else. The Self-Marginalization of Wilhelm Stekel brings a fresh perspective on Stekel, revealing the complex, symbiotic bond between mentor and follower in its many social, interpersonal, and psychological forms. In addition to shedding light on a famous outsider, this biography is set in a dual context of the formative years of psychoanalysis and Freud¿s relationships with his colleagues: comparisons and contrasts abound with Adler, Jung, and other, revered exiles from Freudian circles. At the same time, each chapter defines and identifies a particular aspect of the marginalization process, including self-marginalization, the relationship of marginals to the mainstream, and the value of marginalization in the construction of identity. In all, this book will providean in-depth look into the social history of psychoanalysis - an informed re-thinking of Stekel¿s contributions as theorist and cliniciana new view of marginalization as differentiated from similar social phenomenapreviously unpublished correspondence between Freud and Stekel - a new translation of Stekel¿s 1926 essay, 'On the History of the Analytical Movement'The Self-Marginalization of Wilhelm Stekel peels back layers of history to create a singular addition to our knowledge of the origins of psychoanalysis. Polarized proton beams with hundreds of GeV are, for example, essential for resolving the ¿spin crisis,¿ i.e., for understanding the angular momentum distribution inside nucleons. Experience with the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at the Brookhaven NationalLaboratory(RHICatBNL)hasshownthatpolarizationat205GeV can be obtained, and tests at the pre-accelerating Alternating Gradient S- chrotron(AGS)haveshownthatatleastupto24GeV,thebeampolarization canbequiteundisturbedwhentheacceleratoriswelladjusted,exceptats- cial energies where resonances occur. In particular, it has not been necessary to study closely the variation of the protons¿ spin directions across the phase space of the beam. However, at very high energies such as in RHIC, TEVA- TRON, HERA-p, LHC, or a future VLHC, new phenomena can occur that can lead to a signi cantly diminished beam polarization. For these high energies, it is necessary to look in more detail at the spin motion at each point in phase space, and for this the invariant spin eld provestobeausefultool. This eldgivesrisetoanadiabaticinvariantofsp- orbit motion, and it de nes the maximum time-average polarization that is usable in a particle physics experiment. Furthermore, the invariant spin eld allows the amplitude dependent spin tune to be de ned and computed and thereby opens the way to a clear evaluation of the e ects of higher-order spin orbit resonances. In particular, the strengths and the depolarizing e ects of these resonances can only be determined once the amplitude-dependent spin tune has been computed.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 192 pp. Englisch.

The ever-increasing sophistication of en- neered coatings and the rapid trend toward producing increasingly smaller devices with greater demands on their fabrication, properties and performance have led to signi cant progress in the science and technology of coatings, particularly in the last decade or two. Nanostructured coatings constitute a major area of sci- ti c exploration and technological pursuit in this development. Withcharacteristic structural length scales on the order of a few nanometers to tens of nanometers, nanostructured coatings provide potential opportunities to enhance dramatically performance by offering, in many situations, extraordinary strength and hardness, unprecedented resistance to damage from tribological contact, and improvements in a number of functional properties. At the same time, there are critical issues and challenges in optimizing these properties with aw tolerance, interfacial adhesion and other nonmechanical considerations, depending on the coating systems and applications. Neuware -Healthcare practitioners and managers increasingly find themselves in clinical situations where they have to think fast and process myriad diagnostic test results, medications and past treatment responses in order to make decisions. Effective problem solving in the clinical environment or classroom simulated lab depends on a healthcare professional's immediate access to fresh information. Unable to consult a library for information, the healthcare practitioner must learn to effectively manage knowledge while thinking on their toes.Knowledge Management (KM) holds the key to this dilemma in the healthcare environment. KM places value on the tacit knowledge that individuals hold within an institution and often makes use of IT to free up the collective wisdom of individuals within an organization. Healthcare Knowledge Management: Issues, Advances and Successes will explore the nature of KM within contemporary healthcare institutions and associated organizations. It will provide readers with an understanding of approaches to the critical nature and use of knowledge by investigating healthcare-based KM systems. Designed to demystify the KM process and demonstrate its applicability in healthcare, this text offers contemporary and clinically-relevant lessons for future organizational implementations. The editors of this book have assembled a group of international contributors that reflects the diversity of KM applications in the healthcare sector. While many KM texts suffer from pitching theoretical issues at too technical a level, Healthcare Knowledge Management approaches the topic from the more versatile 'twin' perspectives of both academia and commerce. This unique text is integrative in nature ¿ a practical guide to managing and developing KM that is underpinned by theory and research.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 312 pp. Englisch.

The development is driven by the need to eliminate ambiguity in specification, design and construction of the application software. Further, the authors show that the considerable effort being expanded nowadays on validation, verification and testing, as required in current software engineering practices, will be reduced. The approach also reinforces the belief that MIS development is independent of software development. The work presents an approach that provides a theoretical foundation for MIS development from the systems theoretic viewpoint along with practical applications ranging from a transaction processing system to a solver system. Both formal systems theory and automatic system generation based on the authors' newly extended Prolog offer a significant increase in the efficiency of specification, design and production of the application software, as well as an increase in the functional reliability of the software produced. The book assumes a working knowledge of elementary set theory, logic, and familiarity with some systems concepts, such as the automaton model.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 380 pp. Englisch.
