The context in which a graduate text on quantum mechanics is studied today has changed a good deal, however. In 1966…, most entering physics graduate students had a quite limited exposure to quan tum mechanics in the form of wave mechanics. Today the standard undergraduate curriculum contains a large dose of elementary quantum mechanics, and often intro duces the abstract formalism due to Dirac. Back then, the study of the foundations by theorists and experimenters was close to dormant, and very few courses spent any time whatever on this topic. At that very time, however, John Bell's famous theorem broke the ice, and there has been a great flowering ever since, especially in the laboratory thanks to the development of quantum optics, and more recently because of the interest in quantum computing. And back then, the Feynman path integral was seen by most as a veryimaginative but rather useless formulation of quantum mechanics, whereas it now plays a large role in statistical physics and quantum field theory, especially in computational work. For these and other reasons, this book is not just a revision of the 1966 edition. It has been rewritten throughout, is differently organized, and goes into greater depth on many topics that were in the old edition. 644 pp. Englisch.

As in other savanna regions of the world, the responses of biota to different re regimes are poorly understood, such that re management represents one of the greatest challenges to conservation managers and researchers alike. This is the context within which a landscape-scale re experiment was established at Kapalga Research Station in Kakadu,which aimed to provide a sound scienti c basis for conservation management in the region. The experiment was established by The Australian Commonwealth Scienti c and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO),but involved collaborators from a range of universities and government agencies, including the m- agers of Kakadu,the Australian Nature Conservation Agency (ANCA:now Parks Australia North). This book summarizes the ndings from the Kapalga re experiment and explores the implications for conservation management. We believe that Kapalga has provided important insights into the re ecology of tropical savannas and has broad relevance for the conservation management of - prone landscapes in general. The headquarters of the meeting was the Radisson Kauai Beach Resort. This international meeting was a…ttending by approximately 80 individuals from 23 nations and 4 continents. Seventy-five papers were presented either as platform presentations or poster presentations. Taurine, first isolated from ox bile in 1827 by Tiedemann and Gmelin and named in 1838 by Demarcay, became of significant scientific interest in 1968 when the first extensive review article was published by Jacobsen and Smith. Interest in taurine grew exponentially after 1975 when the first taurine symposium was organized by Ryan Huxtable in Tucson, Arizona. Since that date, taurine symposia have been held approximately every two years held in various cities and resort areas around the world. Taurine investigators have had the privilege of attending these scientific meetings on three continents - Asia, Europe, and North America. Since the initial meeting in 1975, a central question addressed during many of the symposia has been: 'What is physiological, pharmacological, nutritional, and pathological role of taurine '. Although taurine has been established as an important osmolyte, it appears to affect many other biological processes. However, the exact mechanism(s) by 'which taurine acts' has not yet been definitively answered. In Kauai, the patticipants discussed many topics and asked many questions regarding the role and actions of taurine. 608 pp. Englisch.
