Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -By 1988 the Handbook of Vegetation Science is well on its way to completion. With 7 volumes in circulation, 3 volumes in the press, and most of the remaining volumes in preparation it appears that the total task can be completed in the early 'nineties. I am especially thankful to Professor Symoens for accepting the task of editing the volume on aquatic vegetation. The main emphasis of work in phytosociology is devoted to land plants, yet the landscape analysis remains incomplete without the consideration of rivers and lakes. Avolume on inland aquatic vegetation must therefore be most helpful to the land vegetation analyst and not only to the specialist on aquatic vegetation. Professor Symoens succeeded in drafting the most competent team for his task. I am sure that all colleagues working in vegetation analysis will be grateful to them that they have taken the time and energy to complete their chapters. Handbook articles are not easy to write and certainly not easy to edit. in the landscape are treated. The The major aquatic components vegetation analysts will welcome the fact that certain physiological and ecological processes of water plants are covered for which otherwise they would have to consult the limnological literature. This volume, together with the forthcoming volume on wetlands, should completely cover the inland aquatic vegetation problematic. 400 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is about the practice of decision making by school principals and about ways to improve this practice by capitalizing on evaluation dimensions. Much has been written on decision making but surprisingly little on decision making in the school principalship. Much has been also written on evaluation as well as on evaluation and decision making, but not much has been written on evaluation in decision making, especially decision making in the principalship. This book presents two messages. One is that decision making in the principalship can be studied and improved and not only talked about in abstract terms. The other message is that evaluation can contribute to the understanding of decision making in the principalship and to the improvement of its practice. In this book we call for the conception of an evaluation-minded principal, a principal who has a wide perspective on the nature of evaluation and its potential benefits, a principal who is also inclined to use evaluation perceptions and techniques as part of his/her decision-making process. This book was conceived in 1985 with the idea to combine thoughts about educational administration with thoughts about educational evaluation. Studies of decision making in the principalship had already been on their way. We decided to await the findings, and in the meantime we wrote a first conceptual version of evaluation in decision making. As the studies were completed we wrote a first empirical version of same. 218 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Biomathematics emerged and rapidly grew as an independent discipline in the late sixties as scientists with various backgrounds in the mathematical, biological and physical sciences gathered together to form Departments and Institutes centered around this discipline that many at that time felt should fall between the cracks of legitimate science. For various reasons some of these new institutions vanished in the mid-seventies, particularly in the U. S. , the main reason for their demise being economic. Nevertheless, good biomathematical so that the range research has been ceaselessly carried on by numerous workers worldwide of this activity appears now as truly impressive: from useful and effective mathematical statements about problems that are firmly rooted in the 'wet' reality of biology to deep theoretical investigations on outstanding basic questions. It is also interesting to take note that some ideas and theories set forth by 'paleo-biomathematicians' almost a quarter of century ago are now becoming highly appreciated also by scientists engaged in quite different research fields. For instance, neural nets is the hot topic in computer science these days! Well aware of the growing interest in this relatively new field, years back I organized a small workshop on Biomathematics: Current Status and Future Perspectives which was held at the University of Salerno during the middle of April, 1980. 764 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Boundary Integral Equation (BIE) method has occupied me to various degrees for the past twenty-two years. The attraction of BIE analysis has been its unique combination of mathematics and practical application. The EIE method is unforgiving in its requirement for mathe matical care and its requirement for diligence in creating effective numerical algorithms. The EIE method has the ability to provide critical inSight into the mathematics that underlie one of the most powerful and useful modeling approximations ever devised--elasticity. The method has even revealed important new insights into the nature of crack tip plastic strain distributions. I believe that EIE modeling of physical problems is one of the remaining opportunities for challenging and fruitful research by those willing to apply sound mathematical discipline coupled with phys ical insight and a desire to relate the two in new ways. The monograph that follows is the summation of many of the successes of that twenty-two years, supported by the ideas and synergisms that come from working with individuals who share a common interest in engineering mathematics and their application. The focus of the monograph is on the application of EIE modeling to one of the most important of the solid mechanics disciplines--fracture mechanics. The monograph is not a trea tise on fracture mechanics, as there are many others who are far more qualified than I to expound on that topic. 180 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Material particles, electrons, atoms, molecules, interact with one another by means of electromagnetic forces. That is, these forces are the cause of their being combined into condensed (liquid or solid) states. In these condensed states, the motion of the particles relative to one another proceeds in orderly fashion; their individual properties as well as the electric and magnetic dipole moments and the radiation and absorption spectra, ordinarily vary little by comparison with their properties in the free state. Exceptiotls are the special so-called collective states of condensed media that are formed under phase transitions of the second kind. The collective states of matter are characterized to a high degree by the micro-ordering that arises as a result of the interaction between the particles and which is broken down by chaotic thermal motion under heating. Examples of such pheonomena are the superfluidity of liquid helium, and the superconductivity and ferromagnetism of metals, which exist only at temperatures below the critical temperature. At low temperature states the particles do not exhibit their individual characteristics and conduct themselves as a single whole in many respects. They flow along capillaries in ordered fashion and create an undamped current in a conductor or a macroscopic magnetic moment. In this regard the material acquires special properties that are not usually inherent to it. 228 pp. Englisch. …

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The three coeditors knew John Butterworth for many years and had worked closely with him on a number of research projects. We respected him as a valuable colleague and friend. We were greatly saddened by his untimely death. This book is an attempt to remember him. We dedicate the volume to John with thanks for the contributions he made to our research, to the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration at the University of British Columbia, and to the accounting profession. This volume contains twelve invited papers on the general topic of the economic theory of information and contracts. We asked leading scholars who had known John to contribute papers. The response was very gratifying. The authors provided us with new strong research papers that should make a lasting contribution to the accounting and information economics research literature, and make us all proud to have put this volume together. The research papers in the volume are in three sections: information evaluation in multi person conte)l:ts; contracting in agencies under moral hazard; and contracting in agencies with private information. We begin part I with Jerry Feltham's review of John Butterworth's pioneering contributions to the accounting and information economics literature. This is followed by an introduction to the papers in the volume and the papers themselves.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 436 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The twenty-two chapters included in this book were written by as many scholars working independently of each other in different countries. They present, nevertheless, a well integrated picture of systematic advance in the field of input-output analysis on the broad front, stretching from formal mathematical modelling, through construction of large, specialized databases to detailed empirical inquiry and concrete examples of practical applications. While reflecting a great variety of individual interests and working styles, these contributions taken together provide evidence of what might appear to be co ordinated efforts. This coherence has not been brought about by the central guidance so typical of modern large-scale research. It simply reflects the internal discipline and cohesiveness of a particular methodological approach. In input-output analysis, empirical inquiry and theoretical model building have to be carried out hand-in-hand. If the aim of the investigation is to provide concrete, detailed explanation of observed reality, building an elaborate mathematical model makes little sense without an appropriate database. The language and the terminology used in the construction of that database must, however, be exactly the same as that employed in the formulation of the theoretical model. The same specifications and definitions must, of course, be adhered to - after the theoretical computations have been completed - in the interpretation of the numerical results.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 436 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Surface organometallic chemistry is a new field bringing together researchers from organometallic, inorganic, and surface chemistry and catalysis. Topics ranging from reaction mechanisms to catalyst preparation are considered from a molecular basis, according to which the 'active site' on a catalyst surface has a supra-molecular character. This. the first book on the subject, is the outcome of a NATO Workshop held in Le Rouret. France, in May. 1986. It is our hope that the following chapters and the concluding summary of recommendations for research may help to provide a definition of surface organometallic chemistry. Besides catalysis. the central theme of the Workshop, four main topics are considered: 1) Reactions of organometallics with surfaces of metal oxides, metals. and zeolites; 2) Molecular models of surfaces, metal oxides, and metals; 3) Molecular approaches to the mechanisms of surface reactions; 4) Synthesis and modification of zeolites and related microporous solids. Most surface organometallic chemistry has been carried out on amorphous high-surf ace-area metal oxides such as silica. alumina. magnesia, and titania. The first chapter. contributed by KNOZINGER. gives a short summary of the structure and reactivity of metal oxide surfaces. Most of our understanding of these surfaces is based on acid base and redox chemistry; this chemistry has developed from X-ray and spectroscopic data, and much has been inferred from the structures and reactivities of adsorbed organic probe molecules. There are major opportunities for extending this understanding by use of well-defined (single crystal) oxide surfaces and organometallic probe molecules.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 352 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The first optimal design problem for an elastic column subject to buckling was formulated by Lagrange over 200 years ago. However, rapid development of structural optimization under stability constraints occurred only in the last twenty years. In numerous optimal structural design problems the stability phenomenon becomes one of the most important factors, particularly for slender and thin-walled elements of aerospace structures, ships, precision machines, tall buildings etc. In engineering practice stability constraints appear more often than it might be expected; even when designing a simple beam of constant width and variable depth, the width - if regarded as a design variable - is finally determined by a stability constraint (lateral stability). Mathematically, optimal structural design under stability constraints usually leads to optimization with respect to eigenvalues, but some cases fall even beyond this type of problems. A total of over 70 books has been devoted to structural optimization as yet, but none of them has treated stability constraints in a sufficiently broad and comprehensive manner. The purpose of the present book is to fill this gap. The contents include a discussion of the basic structural stability and structural optimization problems and the pertinent solution methods, followed by a systematic review of solutions obtained for columns, arches, bar systems, plates, shells and thin-walled bars. A unified approach based on Pontryagin's maximum principle is employed inasmuch as possible, at least to problems of columns, arches and plates. Parametric optimization is discussed as well.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 490 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The last decade has seen a rapid development and growing importance in the application of nuclear physics methods to material sciences. It is a general desire to understand modern material problems on a microscopic scale, which, due to their inherent microscopic nature, made nuclear techniques highly suitable tools for basic and applied research in this field. The Advanced Study Institute on 'Nuclear Physics Applications on Ma terials Science' brought together scientists active in different but closely re lated fields to review and discuss selected topics of bulk properties of metals, semiconductors and insulators as well as properties of surfaces, interfaces and thin films. Most of the excellent lectures and oral presentations of the School are collected in part I of the present volume, while extended abstracts of scientific work presented as posters are added in part II. The pleasant site of the ASI at Viana do Castelo and the northern province of Portugal, Alto Minho, provided the stimulating atmosphere for an in spiring School. Many people contributed to the scientific and social success of the institute. Thanks are especially due to the members of the local organizing committee, N. Ayres de Campos, M. Fernanda da Silva, A. Pedroso de Lima and my co-director J. Carvalho Soares. His permanent involvement in preparing and realization of the ASI was essential for this memorable School.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 476 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Surface organometallic chemistry is a new field bringing together researchers from organometallic, inorganic, and surface chemistry and catalysis. There are major opportunities for extending this understanding by use of well-defined (single crystal) oxide surfaces and organometallic probe molecules. 352 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -'The criterion of true beauty' , wrote Fulke Greville, 1st Baron of Burke, 'is that it increases on examination; if false, that it lessens. There is therefore something in true beauty that corresponds with right reason, and it is not the mere creation of fantasy.' The authors of this compact volume have increased the beauty of an area that is commonly and rightly ac knowledged to be one of the loveliest parts of the Great Lakes. They have done this by integrating the historical, industrial, and cultural influences on 'Lake Manitoulin' in sixteen manuscripts. It is enigmatic that Lake Huron, the second of the Great Lakes to be discovered by European explorers, has been the last to be adequately described Iimnologicaliy. As recently as 1966, for example, Alfred M. Beeton wrote in Limnology in North America: ' . even a list of the more common species comprising the plankton of Lake Huron could be an original contribution to scientific literature.' Comparable statements could have been made for sediments, benthos, and water chemistry. This volume reflects a change of course and Georgian Bay and the North Channel of Lake Huron are now on the scientific map. Science is 'right reason'. Its application to Georgian Bay and the North Channel is a welcome and timely addition for the renewal of public, political, and scientific interest in the conservation of the Great Lakes. 234 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The twenty-two chapters included in this book were written by as many scholars working independently of each other in different countries. The same specifications and definitions must, of course, be adhered to - after the theoretical computations have been completed - in the interpretation of the numerical results. 436 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The first optimal design problem for an elastic column subject to buckling was formulated by Lagrange over 200 years ago. Parametric optimization is discussed as well. 490 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The last decade has seen a rapid development and growing importance in the application of nuclear physics methods to material sciences.
