The book begins with a short review of a few topics that should be familiar to the student from a general ph…ysics course. These examples will be used throughout the rest of the book to provide physical con texts for introducing the mathematical applications. The next two chapters are devoted to making the student familiar with vector operations in algebra and cal culus. Students will have already become acquainted with vectors in the general physics course. The notion of magnetic flux provides a physical connection with the integral theorems of vector calculus. A very short chapter on complex num bers is sufficient to supply the needed background for the minor role played by complex numbers in the remainder of the text. Mathematical applications in in termediate and advanced undergraduate courses in physics are often in the form of ordinary or partial differential equations. Ordinary differential equations are introduced in Chapter 5. The ubiquitous simple harmonic oscillator is used to il lustrate the series method of solving an ordinary, linear, second-order differential equation. The one-dimensional, time-dependent SchrOdinger equation provides an illus tration for solving a partial differential equation by the method of separation of variables in Chapter 6.

The discussion topics and the leaders were: Resonances and Chaos-A. Morbidelli; Artificial Satellite Orbits-K. T. Alfriend; Near Earth Ob jects - K. Muinonen; Small Solar System Bodies - I. Williams; and Summary - P. K. Seidelmann. The goal of the discussions was to identify what we did not know and how we might further our knowledge. The size of the meeting and the language differences somewhat limited the real discussion, but, due to the excellence of the different discussion leaders, each of these sessions was very interesting and productive. Celestial Mechanics and Astrometry are both small fields within the general subject of Astronomy. There is also an overlap and relationship between these fields and Astrodynamics. The amount of interaction depends on the interest and efforts of individual scientists.

Al…though the potential applications for such tests at the site of specimen collection, now called 'on-site' or 'point-of-care' testing, range far beyond hospital emergency rooms and law enforcement needs, it was catalyzed by the requirements of workplace drug testing and other drugs-of-abuse testing programs. These programs are now a minor national industry in the United States and in some western European countries, and cover populations as diverse as the military, incarcerated criminals, people suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs, all athletes from college to professional ranks, and of course the general employed population, which is monitored for illegal drug use and numbers in the millions. It is not surprising, then, that the need for rapid and precise tests, conducted economically by trained professionals, has become a major goal.
